The Way of Roses is Chapter 10 in A Plague Tale: Innocence. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Chapter 10 “The Way of Roses”.

Follow the Banners With Roses on Them
Amicia managed to survive the rats and the Inquisition in the town and entered the University. She remembers that Lucas told her to follow the roses to get to the Sanguinis Itinera. To begin with, run straight ahead to get access to a new room. Here, get rid of the guard and then move the cart to the position indicated by the arrow below to climb up a bookcase and continue forward.
In the next room, some guards and monks are guarding the area downstairs. Here, the best approach is to only use stealth. Climb down the stairs and hide behind the first bookcase.
Watch out for the monk and proceed when he’s not looking to go hide behind a new bookcase. The monk now will be consulting some book on the bookcase you’re hidden behind. When he moves to the bookcase behind him, hide behind the bookcase next to the column.
Then, one more time, wait for the monk to move to the other bookcase and hide behind another one. Now you’re good to go and enter the new room.
In the new room, wait until the two guards are turning their backs on you. Then, move silently to the beam of light. Move it all the way to the right to allow the rats to leave their nest.
Then, cast Odoris at one of the two guards to have them be eaten by the rats. If the rats don’t devour both guards, repeat the process.
Now, before moving on there’s a collectible (Herbarium 7 – Daisy) we need to grab. Go inside the area where all the rats were. Here you’ll find the collectible.
Now, crouch down the fallen bookcase and enter the next room. Don’t go straight ahead or otherwise you’ll get spotted. Instead, turn right and immediately crouch behind the table.
When the guards are facing the rubble, move to the table on the right and proceed behind the wooden crates. Next, cast a rock at the metal pieces of armor as shown in the picture below to distract the guards and allow you to continue undetected.
Get inside the new room and operate the beam of light. Move it all the way to the right to allow the rats to leave their nest.
Then, approach the window on the wall and cast Odoris at the guard examining the rubble. The rats will eat both guards alive.
To continue, unlock the door that was previously inaccessible because of the rats.
Although we haven’t seen any roses in a while, don’t worry, we’re on the right track. Climb the stairs and open the door to unlock a new cinematic. Here, we will make the acquaintance of the Grand Inquisitor Vitalis Benevent, who is obsessed with getting his hands on Hugo’s blood. Vitalis is searching for the book as well and has had a blacksmith named Rodric captured to find the Sanguinis Itinera for him. Now, we need to closely tail Rodric and the guards. They will lead us to the Sanguinis Itinera.
Follow the Prisoner
Climb down the stairs and sneak past the monks and hide behind the bookcase.
Then, enter the court area to the right. As soon as you enter the room, hide behind the benches on the right and continue until you’re blocked by a toppled bookcase. Next to it, sitting on a bench is a collectible (Curiosity 19 – Study of a Skinned Person).
Now get rid of the guard by using Devorantis and rocks to proceed.
Stay close to the big armored guard, but not too close to avoid getting spotted. Now, we’re tasked to save Rodric.
Save the Prisoner
Point your camera at the chandelier above, equip a rock and cast it at the hinge to unchain it and kill the big guard.
Amidst the ruckus, Rodric will kill the other guard, but in the meantime a fire has broken out and some guards have heard everything. Be ready to take them down. Equip rocks and cast them at their heads. Fortunately, none of them have helmets. Make sure to be in a straight line with the guards’ running path to make among easier. This can be easily done by moving to the left side of the room.
By the time you’ve killed three guards, Rodric will have unlocked the door.
Follow the Prisoner
Now, run with Rodric into the dungeons to escape the guards.
After a bit of running, Rodric will lock a door behind you. We’re safe for now! Follow Rodric through the caves and you’ll get to another library, an underground one this time.
Reach the Book
The Sanguinis Itinera is here, but we need to solve a quick puzzle before. Before the puzzle, we need to grab a collectible (Curiosity 20 – Theriaque) found in the north-west corner of the room, in a small alcove, on a desk.
Now, onto the puzzle. The room has four handles, similar to the ones we used during the watermill puzzle in Chapter 7. We’re going to use compass points to easily refer to them using the entrance to the room as our point of reference. To begin, operate the west handle and have Rodric help you.
The shelf to your left will go up, forming some sort of a path. Then, let you and Rodric go of the handle. This, however, will bring the shelf down. Rodric offers to act as counterbalance, allowing us to get the cart from underneath the lifted shelf.
Before grabbing the cart, wait until the shelf has been lifted at least halfway through. Grab the cart and move it to the indicated position below. Moving it there grants us a way to get on top of the bookcase.
Once you’re on the bookcase, turn left to find another cart you can push down using :triangle:.
Now use the cart you’ve pushed off the shelf and push it to the east side of the room.
Next, have Rodric operate the east handle to lift the shelf, so then we can put the cart we’ve been pushing underneath it.
Once it’s set, tell Rodric to let go.
Then, ask Rodric to operate the north handle. In the meantime, climb back up the shelf, but this time head right.
After you’ve crossed the first set of stairs, tell Rodric to let go of the handle and then make your away around to the book to collect it.
However, Vitalis has tracked us and trouble seems to be brewing. It turns out that Vitalis has been waiting for Hugo’s Macula to wake from its slumber. Vitalis needs Hugo’s blood and the elixir recipe contained in the Sanguinis Itinera in order to fulfill his purpose and “save the world”. Time to escape.
Flee from the University
Stick with Rodric and follow the path that will lead outside. Open the door and move around the corridor. Then, have Rodric take down the enemy standing guard in the corridor and enter the next room.
Here, equip a rock and aim it at the metal pieces of armor to distract the guard, then ask Rodric to take him down for you.
Before proceeding, make sure to grab the collectible (Gift 10 – Reading Stone) sitting in the back of the room, north-east from where you came from.
In the next room, have Rodric take down the guard on the left and as he approaches him, headshot the guard on the right. Timing is important here.
Climb the stairs and take your new ammunition type from Rodric: Exstinguis. Exstinguis puts out fire, useful to lure rats to enemies. Craft some and the use + to cast it at the brazier on the ground next to the guard. The nearby group of rats will eat him, allowing you to proceed unseen.
Next, aim Exstinguis at the guard holding a torch. Just like before, the rats will take care of him.
Now, before making our way through the grounds, we need to make a brief detour for the third Alchemist Cart (3/5) in the game. Climb the fence shown in the picture below and head right. Craft some Luminosa to blow the swarm of rats up and enter the cart. Your progress will be saved right after entering it.
Now, get back the way you came from and approach the grounds’ middle area. Sneak behind the two guards and use the chest with the metal pieces of armour to attract one of them closer to your location and then quickly press + to cast Exstinguis at the torch near the chest. Remaining hidden behind the fountain will ensure this part of the chapter will go smoothly.
As for the other one, either use Somnus or Devorantis + rocks to knock him out.
Then, kick the burning fence open to get through the building in flames and keep following Rodric until you’re safe and sound outside.
Amicia will give one final look at the library, touched by the huge cultural loss all of those books had to suffer.
