This is River Ward’s 1st Side Job and one of the quests that leads to River Ward’s Romance (can only be romanced with female body type). Your choices in this particular job do not affect the Romance, can’t choose anything wrong here.

River Ward’s Side Questline:

  1. I Fought The Law
  2. The Hunt
  3. Following The River

Starting Location: I Fought The Law

Meet with Elizabeth Peralez

At the quest marker there will be a car. Get in and you will meet Elizabeth & Jefferson Peralez. Your dialogue choices here don’t matter – they all lead to the same outcome. They will give you a braindance and you’re supposed to find some clues related to the death of a politician.

Watch the braindance and look for clues

To begin you should scroll through the entire braindance timeline once (hold :r2: / :rt: ) which marks the clues in the timeline (yellow / green). Press :l1: / :lb: to enter editing mode. Remember you can pause the recording :square: / :x1: . You can switch between the yellow and green timeline by pressing :r1: / :rb: .

You must scan the following clues:

Clue #1: At 0:13 the Mayor.

Clue #2: At 0:15 the Mayor talking.

Clue #3: At 0:35, the door.

Clue #4: At 1:14, the killer – the scan on him is a bit finicky and doesn’t want to complete. Try scanning him at 1:14 when he is dead on the ground (pause the recording at 1:14). Earlier on the scan might not work properly.

Clue #5: At 1:29, corpse on the ground.

Clue #6: At 1:02, scan the yellow object left of the door where the killer came from.

After you have these 6 clues press :circle: / :b: to exit the braindance.

Exit the braindance

Press :circle: / :b: to exit the braindance.

Talk to Jefferson

Report back to Jefferson. Which of the 3 dialogue options you pick doesn’t matter, the quest advances the same either way.

Call Detective Ward

After the conversation, press  to open your phone and call detective River Ward (dialogue choice here doesn’t matter).

Romance: Remember that River Ward can be romanced if you’re playing with a female body type. You can still play all his quests as a male, but can’t get his sex scene at the end of the questline. The important decisions for the romance will be marked in red throughout the River Ward quest walkthroughs. In this particular quest none of your choices impact the romance, so you can’t do anything wrong here.

Meet with Detective Ward

Ward is in a diner in Heywood (The Glen), which gets marked as a main objective. Head there and talk to him. Dialogue choices here don’t matter, it will always end in him walking to his car to talk in private.

Get in River’s Car

Follow him to his car and sit through the drive that follows. After a few minutes you can pick where you want to go first. This only changes the order of the objectives which you’ll get first, but you’ll always have to go to both of them anyway. For the purpose of this walkthrough we’ll go to see the boss first.

  • “Let’s go see his boss” –> pick this dialogue to stay in the same order as this walkthrough. We’ll automatically have to “meet with CI” afterward.
  • “Let’s meet with your CI” –> if you pick this, skip ahead to objective “ask the informant about the Red Queen’s Race”.

Follow River

River will drive to a market in Japantown (you can skip the drive :circle: / :b: to save time). Just walk after him.

Ask the vendors about Christine Markov

Talk to the vendors on the right side of the market if you want, or simply wait a minute and River Ward will find Christine Markov on his own. Then she gets marked in the top left of the market (shown in image below).

Question Christine Markov

When talking to Christine it doesn’t matter if you say you’re a cop or not (or directly ask about Péter Horváth). She’ll give you the info either way. Pick whatever dialogues you want here.

Talk to River

Talk to River and follow him. The dialogues you pick have no consequence.

Deal with the Tyger Claws

On your way back to River Ward’s car, you will run into two Tyger Claw enemies. There will be a timed dialogue. Based on your choice they can leave peacefully or attack you.

  • Let timer run out > they leave peacefully, no combat (best outcome, River resolves the situation)
  • Your friend’ll be out after the election > they leave peacefully, no combat
  • Gentleman, please. > they attack
  • Fuck off, scopshitters > they attack

Talk to River

If you ended things in combat, River will be a bit pissed that you didn’t let him handle the conversation. The best option is that you said nothing and River handled it peacefully. Afterward you can choose whether to drive with him to the informant or meet him. You can save yourself some fast-travel if you pick “Sure, coming with you”.

(Only if you didn’t go with River) Meet River near his informant / Talk to River

If you didn’t ride with River, head there yourself. The place gets marked on the map, in City Center (Corpo Plaza).

Enter the store / Ask the Informant about the Red Queen’s Race

Enter the sex store and speak with the guy behind the counter.

Chase the informant

We got a runner! If you have 6 Body Attribute you can force open the door behind the counter. If not, just shoot the window to the left of the counter, or walk back out the main entrance and turn right. Either way, the guy can’t escape because River Ward already caught him before you can even catch up. So don’t worry, no way to fail here.

Interrogate the informant

The dialogues in the interrogation don’t actually matter. Pick what you want, he will give up the info either way.

Talk to River / Get in River’s Car

Again you can pick whether to go with River directly (easiest) or meet with him later. Say “Sure” to go with him. You can press :circle: to skip the drive.

Talk to River

After you arrive, talk to River once more (choices don’t matter). He can’t enter the enemy warehouse without a warrant. So he sends you instead to do the dirty work.

Enter the warehouse

Enter the warehouse and take out the bunch of enemies inside. Lethally or non-lethally, doesn’t matter.

Find a way into the club / Find a way into the Red Queen’s Race

To find the way into the club, you must interact with a container in the middle of the warehouse ground floor. When you get close to the container doors it will say “Open”. This reveals some hidden stairs leading to an elevator. The image below shows the container to open.

Enter the Red Queen’s Race / Wait for River to get in the elevator

Follow the staircase in the container to the elevator. Wait for River and take the elevator the floor below. Be warned, there are many enemies as soon as you step out the elevator.

(Optional) Incapacitate the Animal Boss

The Animal boss is actually the first enemy you will see on the left, coming at you with a hammer. To incapacitate her (=non-lethal), you can’t kill her with firearms. The easiest option is to use your bare hands. Just don’t kill her if you want to do this bonus objective. You can weaken her up with firearms beforehand, just don’t do the final hit with a lethal weapon.

(Optional) Interrogate the Animal boss

If you took her out non-lethally you can interrogate her. Pick “What’re you doing here?” > “Payup from who? Might be able to help you out” > “Diggin’ for some dirt on that same guy”.

She will reveal Weldon Holt’s name, the opponent of our quest giver Jefferson Peralez in the upcoming election.

Look for the office

Find the office upstairs in the last room of the club.

Check the computer

Interact with the computer in the office and click through all messages and files. Watch the video file till the end, then back away from the computer and talk to River.

Talk to River

When you are all done, tell River “[Leave club] All right. Let’s delta”. There’s nothing important here that you’d need, only some junk items. So you can safely go ahead and leave.

Confront Detective Han

Time to confront the crooked Detective Han. River Ward will do most of the talking, what you say here doesn’t matter.

Talk to River

Talk to River (dialogues here don’t matter, you always get his next quest regardless).

Call Elizabeth Peralez

Hold  and call Elizabeth.

Go to the Peralez’s apartment

Fast travel to the Peralez’s apartment in Westbrook.

Use the intercom

And use the intercom to the right of their apartment building’s door.

Take the elevator to the penthouse

Use the elevator in the lobby.

Talk to Elizabeth and Jefferson

Go to the living room of the Peralezes.

Sit

Sit and report your findings to your quest givers. What you tell them here doesn’t actually matter for anything. It only changes the way they respond during this dialogue.

Leave the building

Lastly, exit the building the same way you came.

This finishes I Fought The Law side quest job in Cyberpunk 2077 (CP77). Now you can play River Ward’s 2nd Quest “The Hunt“.

In the room where the mayor died (shown in the video on the computer) is a BD device on the couch. It has a yellow icon. Interact with it LAST, after interrogating the boss lady and getting the video. V will put it on then collapse. River will come in and a brief cutscene will play. Also, if careful, you can 100% stealth the place and choke hold the boss and interrogate her that way.

Regarding the the Tiger Claws; if you choose “Gentlemen, please” you can avoid combat by jumping. Probably works best if you have the double jump cybermod
