A Broken City
Head forward along the linear path, nothing to pick up at the start of this chapter.
The Climb
Continue under the rubble, and there are a bench and vending machine you can use. When ready, climb up the nearby ladder. At the top you’ll encounter a new enemy subtype, called Byobapolis. These are weak to both ice, and even more so wind. Deal with them, then climb up the next ladder.
At the top don’t climb up the next ladder yet, go around the other circular platform where you will need to deal with two more Byobapolis, then you can open the chest that contains a Mega-Potion. You can then go back and up the second ladder.
On the next platform deal with the two Cerulean Drakes, then climb the third ladder. On the next platform, you’re introduced to climbing with the grappling hook. You’re shown a reticule similar to when you shot down walls with barret, then move your camera to aim at the spot and press to fire it and climb up.
Hiding in Plain Sight
In the next area, you will start dealing with new versions of Shinra troops. Immediately you will run into the first new type, 3-C SOLDIER Operator, which are actually 3rd Class SOLDIER unites. Like other humans, they are weak to fire, but take much more to stagger and can cast magic at you.
When they are defeated, pick up the radio that the one enemy drops.
Continue through the tunnel, then at the end you will have another grapple point to attach to leading on top. That will immediately fail, and you’ll need to deal with a group of two Elite Security Officers and a Guard Dog, followed by two more Elite Security Officers and a Helitrooper. You will remain in combat and need to head down this tunnel, dealing with a group of four Elite Officers, followed by another four, plus a Helitrooper. After that fourth group, you will be out of combat and can continue upwards.
The Path to Greater Heights/The Crumbling Building
Continue forward and there will be a bench and vending machine you can use. This vending machine sells disc 5. Lurking in the Darkness.
After resting don’t go up the building yet, instead go around to the right. Here you will find two more of the 3-C SOLDIER Operators, as well as a new Elite Helitrooper, which can be dealt with basically the same as the normal ones. After they are defeated you can find a chest in the corner, which contains 3,000 gil.
Back back to the front of the building and heal any damage you took with the bench, then proceed up the stairs. On the next floor go to the middle of the room where the circular tube is coming through the ceiling, and you can use the grapple to climb up.
The next floor will have a group of Slug-Rays to deal with, though there is also a new variant of them called a Shock-Ray. These function about the same aside from using shock attacks, and they will cast Manaward on the other Slug-Rays, which blocks you magic attacks from ones they successfully cast it on. When dealt with go around the floor to the middle again to grapple to the next floor.
On the next floor, there will be another group of Shock and Slug-Rays to deal with. In the same area, you should see a chest in the corner which will contain a Hi-Potion.
Go to the opposite side of the floor and then towards the right. There is a grapple point you can attach to that will take you up a floor, then walk around the outside down the flights of stairs. At the bottom, you enter back into the building and find a chest, which contains an Enchanted Ring. Grapple the wall opposite the chest to get back out of this area.
Proceed up the stairs to the next floor, then walk around to reach the path leading back outside and towards the red metal structure. Outside you will face a new robot enemy, a Blast-Ray. These cannot fly like the other Ray type enemies, but they have a grenade launcher they use to deal much more damage. They are weak to lightning attacks like other robots. When they stagger a field appears around them which pushes characters away, so hit them with ranged attacks or spells while they’re staggered.
Climb up the ladder onto the red structure. On the first circular level go around to the back to find a chest that contains a Turbo-Ether, then climb up the next ladder.
On this next level go to the left first where you’ll find another shorter ladder. At the top is a chest that contains a Smelling Salts. Go back down and around to find the next ladder. On the next level there are only Shinra boxes, so follow the path again to the next ladder.
At the top you’ll be on a road, and need to duck under and between some rubble to progress. Go across the beam, then you will be on top of the building you were moving through earlier. Here you will need to deal with a couple of Byobapolis and a Cerulean Drake. After they are defeated do not continue towards the objective yet, look back at the scaffolding on the rooftop to find a grapple point. Climb up to find a chest which will contain a Magician’s Bracelet.
Continue along the path to the next building.
Flight of the Valkyrie
On the next building, you will be attacked by the large drone spotted earlier in the chapter. You will need to wait between breaks in it firing to move between the structures to progress to the end.
To the Stairs
At the end of the path, run all the way down the stairs following Tifa and Barret. At the bottom, you will need to deal with a group of two Blast-Rays.
In Hot Pursuit
When the two robots are defeated head up the ladder on the far pillar. At the top you’ll need to deal with two Elite Helitroopers, then you will have a bench and vending machine you can use before continuing. Head up the nearby stairs before progressing to find a chest that contains an Antidote. Head back downstairs and next to the vending machine step on the broken rocks and follow the path till there’s a staircase. Behind the staircase is a chest containing a Remedy. Go all the way upstairs to reach the top of the structure.
To the Top of the Plate
On top of the structure, use the two grapple points to continue above.
Boss Fight: The Valkyrie
The first time you encounter Valkyrie, you have to make a dash for the next metal shelter in between bursts of fire. Then, carry on and you’ll come to a cutscene after which you have to run towards the screen dodging more bullets. Then the battle will start for real.
Valkyrie is a medium-difficulty fight as long as you know when to exploit it. To begin with, have Elemental-Wind on Barret and Elemental-Lightning on Cloud, with another MAX of each Materia on Tifa. When it’s in the air in the beginning, use Barret and hit it with Overcharge, regular attacks and Maximum Fury, supplemented with Aeroga spells from Cloud and Tifa. You should be able to Stagger it quite early this way, dealing some good damage and bringing it in closer so your two close-range characters can join the fray with their physical abilities.
The next phase will then start, which is when this battle really gets going. It spits out a drone which flies around the battlefield firing a laser at you, which does hefty damage. Make it your priority to take it out immediately. Once that’s dealt with, move back to using Barret to whittle down Valkyrie’s health. Your opportunity to attack with the other characters comes after it uses Drill Dive, which is fairly easy to dodge by running away. It will get stuck in the ground momentarily after using this attack, so close the distance and get a good few hits in before retreating.
Its main attacks as it flies around are Mark 98 Rotary Cannons and Mark 99 Anti-Fiend Artillery, both of which are best to Guard against than try and dodge. Stagger it again to bring it down to the ground and start the final phase.
This final stage is where Valkyrie can be tough. It likes to drop to the ground and spin its arms rapidly, whizzing around the battlefield like a spinning top. Do your best to dodge this as when it comes to a stop, you have a brief window to get some good hits in.
Most annoyingly, Valkyrie will cover itself in a shield which blocks practically any damage. The key to this part is the huge blue vertical laser which appears on the battlefield. The trick is to lure the Valkyrie close to you and briefly stand in the laser, it will then flash brightly which means it’s about to fire. Quickly run away and if you’re lucky and Valkyrie was close enough, it will get hit by the laser instead and break the shield, causing the Stagger bar to fill significantly.
Repeat this step if the shield goes back up and you’ll eventually Stagger it. Hopefully by now you’ll have your Limit Breaks ready and can end the fight quickly.
Hard Difficulty Tips: Valkyrie’s Lightning attacks can be brutal on Hard, so it might be worth putting your Elemental-Lightning on Cloud’s armor instead of weapon to reduce the damage (but keep Elemental-Wind on Barret’s weapon for the early advantage).
The laser attack in the final phase will almost certainly kill you if it hits, so you’ll have to get your timing right when you try and lure the Valkyrie into it. This might be a good time to have Manawall on all three characters to reduce any possible hits. Other than that, make sure you take the drone out instantly and use the debris around the battlefield to protect you from attacks rather than trying to Guard or dodge.
After defeating Valkyrie it finishes Chapter 15: The Day Midgar Stood Still in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Now the mission The Belly of the Beast starts.

There’s a remedy before getting to the area “To the Top of the Plate” – before the long staircase around the building on the right (just after the bench and vending machine).
