The Spice of Life is a side quest in Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Rebirth. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Spice of Life Side Mission (Odd Job). It’s also known as Cissnei’s Request. It requires you to help Cissnei acquire ingredients for her soup.
The Spice of Life becomes available at the Gongaga Village Community Noticeboard after completing the “Teach Me, Great Warrior” Side Quest.
Side Quest: The Spice of Life
Chapter: 9
Area: Gongaga Village – Cissnei’s House (available from Gongaga Village Community Noticeboard)
Quest Giver: Cissnei
Requirement: Available after completing the “Teach Me, Great Warrior” Side Quest
Reward: Chakra Materia Earrings (Accessory), Aerith Relationship Strengthened, 10 Party EXP, Player EXP (scaled to your level)
Mission Info: Gongaga mushroom soup may seem like a simple dish to most people, but making it is harder than you’d expect. My attempts aren’t coming together, and the flavor is always just a little bit off. I don’t know if something’s missing, or if I added one too many ingredients, or what…
Objectives:
- Look for the Produce Peddler
- Follow Melon
- Gather Ingredients
- Gather Rock Salt
- Gather Ingredients
- Deliver the Ingredients
Starting Location: The Spice of Life (Cissnei’s Request)
You can accept the Odd Job from the Community Noticeboard in Gongaga Village, or you can go directly to the quest giver in Cissnei’s House.
Look for the Produce Peddler
Head outside to the peddler in the street.
Follow Melon
Follow Melon to Torgan’s farm.
Gather Ingredients
You will now need to collect some Gongaga Rock Salt and Magonga Mushrooms. Follow Melon and he will escort you to some rock salt. You will have to deal with three enemy encounters on the way.
Gather Rock Salt
Now that you’re at the location, you will need to collect three rock salt deposits. They are the pink salts shaped like triangles. Grab one by the water, then the other two will be up the top of the hill by the rope bridge.
Gather Ingredients
Now that you have the rock salt, head to Magon Hill south of Gongaga Village to gather the Magonga Mushrooms.
Use your chocobo to track the scent and jump across the giant mushrooms to reach one. In order to pluck the mushroom, you will need to play a little minigame where you must tug different sections of the mushroom in the correct order. If done correctly you’ll get a Plump Magonga Mushroom, if you fail you’ll get a Broken Magonga Mushroom. The order is different every time and it can be difficult to figure out what is the correct order, so don’t worry if you get broken ones. If you want to get the best result you will need all Plump mushrooms, in which case make sure to save before attempting each time, as once you interact with the mushroom you cannot back out. Repeat this for all three mushrooms, fighting the enemies at each location beforehand.
Deliver the Ingredients
Return to Cissnei at her house to deliver the ingredients.
If a mushroom got damaged you can only get a 2-star rating when handing in the ingredients to Cissnei, but this won’t affect the quest rewards and isn’t relevant for anything else.

This is the worst side quest yet. There’s no good way to determine which direction has the greatest range of motion.

The mushroom minigame is based on how far the mushroom moves a certain directions. If you know this one fact, then the minigame is much easier.

Haptics make it somewhat more visceral, but it was actually super easy without them by very slightly twitching the stick in every direction and seeing which accelerates the most based on the smallest input. VERY slightly twitch the stick; that’s where the most visual difference is viewed. The mushroom shows more variance in its movement under very slight directional pressure relative to fully extended stick input.

Man, these gold star requirements on these filler side quests are are serious bog down! I honestly can’t see myself chapter selecting to do this trash. The more I see how tedious the completion requirements are regarding minigames, side quests, collectibles, open world bloat, the more I can’t grasp what the hell SE thought they were doing with this one, smh…

Some can be a bit annoying, but fortunately the gold stars on side quests aren’t needed to unlock anything, outside of pure completionism and wanting to fill out the Play Log.
