A Fisher of Men is the 18th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of A Fisher of Men Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.
A Fisher of Men is unlocked when you complete Paying a Social Call.
Quest Giver: Abigail

Region: New Hanover
Gold Medal Requirements:
- After arriving at the river, catch a fish within 1 minute 30 seconds
- Complete within 7 minutes 20 seconds
Starting Location: Horseshoe Overlook, New Hanover
Talk to Abigail
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete within 7 minutes 20 seconds
Abigail would like you to do something with Jack, and of course Arthur has nothing better to do. Since this mission is all about speed to get a gold medal, skip the cinematic.
Go find Jack in camp, and talk to him to take him fishing.
Get on your horse while Jack fetches his fishing rod, then wait for him so you can help him into your saddle.
Take Jack Fishing
- GOLD MEDAL: After arriving at the river, catch a fish within 1 minute 30 seconds
Gallop to the fishing spot as fast as you can, then get off your horse.
Don’t even wait for the prompt, immediately open your weapon wheel and bring out your fishing pole. Once you have the pole equipped, hold the L1/LB button again to show your bait selection. Choose cheese bait.
At the edge of the water hold L2/LT then press R2/RB until Arthur pulls the rod all the way back. Aim towards the splashes in the water if you see any, otherwise just cast out as far as you can. Rotate the right stick very slowly to reel in, and if you’re not getting any nibbles tap the R2 once in a while. If you get no action, reel in and try again, but if you feel a nibble immediately hit R2/RT to hook the fish. Rotate the right stick as fast as you can. Your first fish will be small so you should be able to reel it in all the way without it fighting you at all. Do not throw it back.
As soon as you catch a fish, Jack will ask to take a break and will go make a flower necklace. Stand at the edge of the fishing spot nearest to Jack and wait. At this point you can basically stop fishing until Jack has finished his necklace. There will be some back and forth dialogue, then eventually a cinematic will play showing the completed necklace. Skip the cinematic.
Go Back to Camp
Get back on your horse and pick Jack up, then get back to camp as fast as you can.
Once back at camp, Jack will show Abigail the necklace he made. Skip this cinematic, and the mission will be over.
If you didn’t watch the cinematics and caught your fish quickly, you should easily return to camp and meet the gold requirement.
This finishes A Fisher of Men main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest Pouring Forth Oil – IV starts.

I’d like to know too. I’m near the end of Chapter 2 and still don’t see this mission.
I can’t get it to start either. Have done pouring oil 1 2 3 and 4 but still no fishing
I think this is glitched.
What’s funny is that you’re encourage to spend as little time as possible with Jack and fishing which is exactly opposite of the purpose of the exercise and the whole point of fishing. This mission should actually penalize you if you finish too fast. As a wise [young] man once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Abigail popped up right after speaking to John (pouring forth oil 3) .. My next mission is now pouring forth oil 4.
When Ross and Milton are leaving, Ross says to Jack “Enjoy your fishing, kid, while you still can.”
I was struggling with the time requirement until I read here that you don’t have to catch fish past the 1st one. That helps!
you can’t rush putting away your rod too quick otherwise the mission hangs and Jack takes forever to finish. It’s worth casting at least once again, following the on-screen prompts, once talking starts can put the rod away.

Does anyone else have an issue where they don’t have a fishing pole in their weapon/item wheel? Other sites say starting this mission automatically equips you with one….but that’s not happening. I get to the water and can’t fish because I don’t have a pole.
