Friends in Very Low Places is the 37th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Friends in Very Low Places Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.
Friends in Very Low Places is unlocked after completing Magicians for Sport.
Quest Giver: Josiah Trelawny
Chapter: 3
Region: Lemoyne
Gold Medal Requirements:
- Complete the mission without being spotted
- Complete within 8 minutes 10 seconds
Starting Location: Clemens Point, Lemoyne
Talk to Trelawny
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete within 8 minutes 10 seconds
Skip the cinematic, I’ll summarize. Trelawny has a friend named Alden who works at the railroad station who is willing to part with information about the schedule and contents of stagecoaches running through the region so that you can choose the best targets. Get on your horse and follow him to the meeting.
Hitch your horse at the Rhodes station and go inside.
Trelawny and Alden speak for a minute about nonsense, with Trelawny putting emhasis on the “discouraged man” phrase, like it has a double meaning.
He then introduces you to Alden as ‘one of us’, telling to you pay him for his efforts. Alden writes down some details on a scrap of paper, and passes it to Trelawny. He also tells you that he has a colleague named Hector in Strawberry that will also provide details on the stagecoaches for a price. Good to know.
With the details in hand, follow Trelawny to the ambush on the river road through Siltwater Strand.
When you arrive, you’ll hash out a plan where Trelawny will distract the passengers in the stagecoach while you sneak up behind it and loot the lockbox without anyone noticing. Normally on a timed mission I’d suggest taking the more direct approach since you don’t have time for subterfuge. However, there is also a stealth based requirement for the gold medal on this mission.
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete the mission without being spotted
Rob the Stagecoach
You’re pretty much forced to take part in Trelawny’s ridiculous plan. Tail the coach from a distance until Trelawny manages to get it to stop. Then get off your horse, crouch down and try to stick to the brush on the side of the road. Don’t get too close immediately.
The driver will jump down and walk to the back of the coach. If you are too close you’ll be spotted and he’ll realize that they’re being robbed. Which does not help your plan.
After a minute or so, he will turn and walk down to the water’s edge, giving you the opportunity to rob the lockbox.
Get in close, approaching slowly. Break the lock, if you have a lockbreaker, loot the lockbox and get away as quietly as possible.
Get back on your horse and wait for the coach to leave so its safe to meet up with Trelawny. Go back to him and talk. Skip the cinematic where you split the pot, and the mission will end.
This finishes Friends in Very Low Places main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest The Fine Joys of Tobacco starts.

Bragbag says
This is not possible in 8.10. I did everything perfect and was like 9 minutes.
Erika says
The key is trigger the cinematic camera at the end. Doesn’t count against you.
Scott says
I’m having the same issue. Did everything to a T and I still got silver. So dumb
PoisonJam says
Yeah, I tried this four times and it’s absolutely impossible to do within that time limit.
ken says
it’s actually not that bad… took me 4 times… 2nd time I crashed into a tree, had to restart. 3rd time Trelawny walked around every hitching post toward the left side and doubled back… so restarted that also… dude fucked up! So from the beginning just go in a straight line to the yellow dot, even if Trelawny says you’re going to fast to slow down hell pick up the pace… basically just go for it… hitch your horse and way by for him to start walking inside… then just go on about to the location… so as soon as the stagecoach stops, you can crouch in the bushes on the left side of the coach (about 3-4 meters away) it might seem like that guy sees you but he wont and as soon as he turns around to go along that trail you can rush the lockbox. then you double back a little you hide behind the tree trunk right by Trelawny. As soon as the stagecoach leaves you walk to Trelawny and which triggers the cinematic, go ahead and skip it and mission ends right there….
JEEZ says
How do i rob coaches at end game? The whole disscourageous men have dissabled for me and cant finish the challenge because of it. Btw i finished the game and when i spoke with Alden he said he wasnt going to be doing it anymore, what do i do?
Evan says
You’ve probably figured it out, but the best way is to take the stage to Strawberry then walk around the back of it, break the lock, and take something.
Lockie says
This guide leaves out some vital information that saves alot of time!
Firstly, rather than “follow” Trelawny from camp, ride full gallop in basically a straight line towards the marker in Rhodes.
The next big time save comes with triggering the cinematic camera when prompted during Trelawny’s singing routine because it essentially stops time.
Turn on the cinematic camera when prompted up until the lady is about to hop out, then hop off your horse and move slowly forward, crouched and when the guard walks away do a crouch-run to the lock box. Loot it, turn around and crouch-run up behind the fallen log to your left which gives you a second cinematic camera prompt which you leave on until it finishes.
Then walk to Trelawny to trigger the end cutscene.
Roy says
I can cofirm that as long as the guard walks away even standing run is ok.
Tim says
I can confirm Roy is 100% wrong. Do not run to the lockbox but rather crouch run. I was doing so well on my third time and unfortunately listened to that comment. The guard was walking away and I ran up. He goes “What the hell was that”. Comes over mission screwed.
DEADIRISHMAN says
I can confirm that Lockie has a great approach to this mission. Going directly to Rhodes as well as utilizing the Trelawney cut scene prompts saves a bunch of time. Was able to accomplish Gold for this on my 2nd attempt.
Mad Dog says
Switching to cinematic view when prompted seemed to make the difference for me, as well.
RSB says
Exactly this, I tried and only got silver 5 times before I did a little reading up and saw this about the cinematic camera, first time trying with that and I got gold.
