Red Dead Redemption 2 That’s Murfee Country Walkthrough

November 18, 2018 by Jack McBastard 6 Comments

That’s Murfee Country is the 66th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of That’s Murfee Country Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.

That’s Murfee Country is unlocked after completing Fleeting Joy.

Quest Giver: Dutch
Chapter: 5
Region: Lemoyne

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • Deliver Meredith to her mother within 2 minutes
  • Get 15 headshots
  • Complete with at least 85% accuracy
  • Complete the mission without taking any health items

Starting Location: Lakay, Lemoyne

Talk to Dutch

Dutch is rambling again about chess moves and contemplating the future, when he should be moving the camp. He tells you to take Charles and scout a location up beyond Butcher Creek where you can regroup and plan your next move.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Complete the mission without taking any health items
  • GOLD MEDAL: Complete with at least 85% accuracy
  • GOLD MEDAL: Get 15 headshots

Go talk to Charles, then get on your horse and ride north to the waypoint. He warns you that you’re heading into Murfee Brood country, which sounds appropriately ominous.

When Charles asks if you should take the horses or go by canoe, be aware that if you go by canoe you won’t have access to your saddle to change your weapons for the length of the mission, and even though he says it will be faster it really isn’t. Its better all around to take your horse.

After a riding cinematic, you’ll dismount when you hear Murfees talking at a camp ahead. Follow Charles while remaining crouched to stay quiet. Charles will say to take out one while he takes out the other. Use your bow, throwing knife, or tomahawk to kill one of the Murfees silently. Might as well start going for headshots for the gold medal requirement while you’re at it.

Follow Charles again, and he will lead you to a cave where the Murfees appear to be holed up. Seems like it would be perfect for your purposes once you kick out the Murfees and… redecorate.

Charles asks if you want to sneak into the cave or flush them out with dynamite. It would make sense tactically to stay stealthy as long as possible on this mission. First of all, there are a ridiculous number of Murfees in that cave, and a combination of inbreeding and hard living has made them hard to kill. They tend to rush you with melee weapons which will decimate your Health meter, or sometimes even kill you in a single hit. Its much easier to get headshots and maintain your accuracy when you can take your time to set them up, as well.

Approach the cave stealthily, and take out the Murfee sentry in the entranceway with your bow. It may be challenging to get a headshot while he’s bent over cutting up a corpse. Use Dead Eye to make shot easier.

Entering the cave, there will be another Murfee just ahead of you upon which you can get another headshot.

The next pair of Murfees are very close together, but you can drop down behind them from a ledge above. You will be able to get at least one headshot, but even using a bow you might be detected. I’d suggest instead bringing out your pistol and tagging each in Dead Eye to be sure you get all the headshots before things go sideways. And be sure to keep an eye on your mini-map for the other two who are just around the stone column next to you.

Once the Murfees are alerted to your assault on their cave, they’ll come out in f0rce. I’d suggest changing to a strong handgun or shotgun, and continuing to aim for headshots as they rush you. When you have groups of three or more in close proximity, don’t hesitate to break out the Dead Eye to wipe them out quickly before they sap your Health.

Another important point, always be watching your mini-map for flankers. The layout of the tunnels allows them to easily get behind you and attack when you least expect it. If you see one of them running past you on the other side of the cave, you’re about to get wrecked. Back up and deal with them immediately, or if you’re overwhelmed pull back up the tunnel so that you can regroup before the assault.

There are only about 20 or so Murfees in the cave so its key you get as many headshots as you can.

Once the area is clear, you’ll discover a hostage at the back of the cave. You’re going to have to calm her down using the defuse dialog option before she’ll come anywhere near you. Open the cage.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Deliver Meredith to her mother within 2 minutes

Skip the cinematic where you rescue her. Outside, get on your horse and hoist her up behind you, then head back to Annesburg quickly.

Stop in the yellow objective area and skip the ending cinematic to bring things to a close.

This finishes That’s Murfee Country main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest Icarus and Friends starts.

Next Up: Icarus and Friends

I think it’s very important to note here (I restarted 3 times because of this, it would have been nice to know) that Charles is a real problem in this mission, he will easily put down more than 5 guys if you let him, you’ve got to be aggressive and that means dead-eyeing both the initial two rather than letting Charles take one and charging through the cave once they’re aware of your presence

Make sure you use your revolver to get the first two headshots on the road, the murfrees won’t hear it. Choose to sneak in. For the guy at the entrance, wait until he stands up to get a headshot with a bow or knife. The next guy is hard to get a headshot on, I just stealth killed him. For the next two, make sure you drop down the ledge on the right so that you won’t be spotted. Headshot the closest guy to you and Charles will get the other. Now, from here, you’re gonna get spotted if you go too much further. Charles will automatically go down the left path, you take the right. As soon as you come from around the corner, the two men sitting will spot you. Use deadeye to headshot both. Now that you’re known, headshot as many men as you see at the bottom. Since charles has the other path, they can’t flank you. Don’t let him kill too many though. Stay on the high ground and headshot them as they come around the corner. Getting meredith home in 2 minutes is easy, just go into cinematic mode and tap X.

Gold on second attempt. I went Arrow head shot on one for the road kills. Two head shot with Lancaster to guy at front entrance and the guy hacking away on the body. There is a choke next to the dead body abuser in which I had about six to eight dead eye head shot kills (You have to aggressively push ahead of Charles and be quick on the draw in the choke as position doesn’t allow much time to head shot). Four more head shot kills with a group not alerted, then two or three more in the final cave with the female all easy head shots in dead eye. That is another way of getting the gold. Mind you i think since the third and fourth wave weren’t triggered till I ascended deeper into the cave it made holding the choke much easier. Not sure if this is reproducible as guides mention flanking hillbillies.

I found out you can’t farm headshots from civilians at the start of the mission because the law will be alerted and you will fail; however, once you arrive at Butchers Creek, you can get all 15 headshots on the NPCs there. It takes some walking around for a bit, but Charles will just wait for you while you go on your headshot rampage. (I used the bow just to make sure the law wasn’t alerted).

What about accepting the gift in the end? Does it effect your moral?
