Here you can find a full Starfield Walkthrough with a Missions List. Starfield has 19 Main Story Quests. A story-focused playthrough will take 20-40 hours depending on the chosen difficulty.
All quest objectives will be marked when tracking them in the quest log. Opening the Scanner (Xbox: LB / PC: F) shows a line on the floor guiding you to the next objective. The artifact locations, which are recurring main objectives, are all randomized for every player on every playthrough but they get marked on the map. Because of this the experience will be slightly different for every player.
Decisions during the story don’t have any lasting impact, with only one exception in Mission 11 High Price to Pay (will be pointed out in walkthrough when it happens). You always get the same next missions regardless of your decisions, and you always get the same ending (there’s only one story ending). Whether you solve an objective peacefully or violently will only affect the next few objectives. For example, successfully persuading someone will skip some objectives, if you fail a persuasion you need to do some extra tasks like breaking into a place or stealing something. Dialogue choices don’t matter, with the exception of companion relationships. You will want to get “Likes” (not “Dislikes”) from your companion to build a romantic relationship with them. This is important for the “Starcrossed” Achievement to maximize the relationship with one character. Other than that, dialogues only affect the response you get, but then the next dialogue choices will always be the same regardless. If you want to max out the relationship with a character it would be best to create quicksaves before dialogues and reload if your choice got a Dislike (displayed in top right corner).
Important Quest Givers and Companions can’t be killed. Because of this there’s no way to lock yourself out of anything important (killing NPCs that are quest objectives is fine). Only thing that’s really missable is Companion Romances. The Companions will stop following you if you attack their friends and allied Factions. For the sake of companion relationships it’s best to pick the “nice” dialogues and solve things peacefully. Shoot at enemies is always fine.
