Shrine Path
Altar Puzzle

. The correct order is as follows:
- Back Left: Rat
- Back Right: Fish
- Front Left: Kimono
- Front Middle: Vase
- Front Right: Paper Fan
Hard Difficulty – Each pedestal will have an image of a plant, which you can see on the items by examining them with
and rotating them. The correct order is as follows:
- Back Left: Fish
- Back Right: Kimono
- Front Left: Paper Fan
- Front Middle: Vase
- Front Right: Rat
Lost in the Fog Difficulty – Each item will represent flora, with the answer for each hidden in the note. The correct order is as follows:
- Back Left: Fish
- Back Right: Rat
- Front Left: Paper Fan
- Front Middle: Kimono
- Front Right: Vase
Omamori: Cat
As you progress through the Shrine Path, you will find a locked door which starts the Shrine Vault Puzzle (there is a trophy tied to not taking damage during this puzzle, see below). This will open up the whole area and allow you to interact with the walls of emas as part of the puzzle. While doing this puzzle, In the western section of emas, there will be a wall covered in worn-down ema, and one Cat ema that you can interact with. Turn it around and this Omamori will be behind it for you to grab. This must be found before you grab the Sacred Key after completing the puzzle, as you won’t be able to come back here after grabbing the key!
Trophy: Untouchable
During the Shrine Vault Puzzle, you will encounter a new enemy type. You will fight it immediately, and it will regenerate after enough time passes while you do the below puzzle to find the code. You will need to fight it, complete the puzzle and open the Shrine Vault without getting hit. They will mostly attack with two attacks: an overhead attack that can be parried with
, or a combo attack with nine swings, with the ninth being the overhead that you can parry. For the combo attack, walk backwards from it so you’re out of range, counting the attacks, then move in after the eighth attack so you can parry the overhead. You will know when you can parry their overhead attack as they will flash red.
If you want you can head back to the Hokora after each ema to make a manual save to make this easier. You can also simply avoid it after the first fight, as it is blind and will not attack you unless you make too much noise near it. Alternatively, this can be done on NG+ without even worrying about the enemy simply by inputting the code immediately.
Shrine Vault Puzzle
Story Difficulty – You will need to look at the wooden ema hanging from the shrines to find the ones with the images of a crane, serpent and tortoise. There will be one correct ema in each section (two sections in the west and one in the south where you encounter the new enemy). When you find one, hold
and press
to flip it and find the correct symbol. These will be marked in your journal for your reference. After interacting with the third ema for the solution, you will also get the Combination Lock Dial.
- Crane: Circle with a horizontal line through it
- Serpent: Circle with a vertical line through it
- Tortoise: Snake with a V underneath the head
Hard Difficulty – You will need to look at the wooden ema hanging from the shrines to find the ones with the images of lightning, a decayed tree and kudzu (green leaves with purple flower). There will be one correct ema in each section (two sections in the west and one in the south where you encounter the new enemy). When you find one, hold
and press
to flip it and find the correct symbol. After interacting with the third ema for the solution, you will also get the Combination Lock Dial.
- Lightning: Circle with two vertical lines inside it
- Decayed Tree: Circle with a cross through it
- Kudzu: Square with a T through the middle
Lost in the Fog Difficulty – You will need to look at the wooden ema hanging from the shrines to find the ones with the images of Yokai (spirits), which look like household objects with demonic features: Yokai of the Carriage, Yokai of the Umbrella and Yokai of the Kettle. There will be one correct ema in each section (two sections in the west and one in the south where you encounter the new enemy). When you find one, hold
and press
to flip it and find the correct symbol. Each one will have four symbols on them, and you will need to find the correct symbol for the lock by referencing the clue for that Yokai.
- Yokai of the Carriage: Circle with two vertical lines inside it
- Yokai of the Umbrella: Circle with upside down Y through it
- Yokai of the Kettle: Snake with a V underneath the head
Offering: Dried Carcass (200 Faith)
Across the bridge from the Hokora Shrine on the west side, sitting on a rock.
Next Area: Ebisugaoka Second Visit

You can’t get the cat omamori after solving the puzzle, you should place it earlier in the guide rather than after the puzzle. Do that first during puzzle as you won’t be able to afterwards. Locked myself out of platinum as it’s already complete for next playthrough.
Archavia says
Thanks for pointing this out, I have now changed the order and emphasised that it has to be gotten first. It should still be available on repeat playthroughs however, as even though you can input the code immediately, you can still interact with the Emas on repeat playthroughs.
Donnie says
This is not 100% true. You CAN get it after finishing the puzzle. You CANNOT get it once picking up the key. Just for clarity sake.
Rising says
You need to get the Cat Omamori before you finish the Omamori puzzle or it wont let you examine it, Ideally go to that area first, get it and then do the puzzle. Powerpix, please update the guide.
Archavia says
Thanks, I’ve updated it.
Fredrick says
It’s worth noting that if you’ve already gotten the 3 symbols from the emas and come back to get the cat omamori the game won’t let you interact with the board, so this has to be done first.
Archavia says
Thanks, I’ve updated it.

If any one wants to make this section easier, After you find the shrine with the Foxes that requires a key you can walk anywhere and won’t have to follow the fox man. You can easily pick up all collectables, unlock all paths and find where the answers to the Shrine puzzle are without the monster following you. After you examine the doll and the monster spawns and you can quickly run to the locations with the answers to the shrine puzzle.

Good idea to note you can’t take damage in this section BEFORE you write about the collectible.
I got hit looking for it, and after I found it scrolled down for the useful information “oh by the way don’t get hit in this section”
Archavia says
I moved the collectible up because before it was under the puzzle/trophy and then people missed the cat omamori. I’ve added a note in that though to refer below to the trophy.

Just a quick update, the cat omamori does seem to change location, I found it on a different section and board entirely, still around the west side though 🙂
Chad says
There is another Omamori that can be found here on NG+, which is the Shrew Mole.

There is also a Inari of Sushi that goes for 150 faith, can be found near the beginning of this area, South west, of the first Ema Section.
Thanks for the guide by the way!
