Elden Ring How to Respec, Reset Attributes

This guide explains how to respec and reset your Attributes in Elden Ring. All attributes can still be reset later in the game. You can also change what your character looks like.

Step 1: Beat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon

First you must beat the main boss called “Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon”. She is found in the region “Liurnia of the Lakes” in Academy of Raya Lucaria. This is the castle in the big flooded area north of Stormveil Castle where you fought Godrick.

Getting to this boss is a bit tricky as it requires multiple sub-steps. All of the relevant points are circled red in the image below, see the text explanation that follows.

1. Grab the Academy Glintstone Key from behind the green dragon boss “Glintstone Dragon Smarag”, in the west of Liurnia.
2. Use the key on the South Raya Lucaria Gate. This lets you go through the blue magic seal of the gate to enter the Academy area. Use the elevator and advance through the Academy until you encounter the boss “Red Wolf of Radagon”. Defeat it.
3. After the Wolf boss, head out to the castle courtyard and jump to the broken bridge on the right. Run up the right side of the bridge where the rolling cannonball can’t hit you, then use the elevator straight ahead to get to Rennala.

Now defeat Rennala. She exclusively uses magic. In her first phase she has a yellow shield. To remove it, find 3 of her minions with a yellow aura around them, they will be throwing books at you and singing a song. After hitting 3 of them her shield will go down and she can be attacked. Repeat until her health is nearly depleted. Just before taking her last health summon the Lone Wolf Ashes, which spawns 3 wolves to help you (see How to summon Ashes & Get Lone Wolf Ashes). Then take her last health and it will start the 2nd phase of the fight, she has a 2nd health bar and will now use magic attacks. Your wolves carry over into the 2nd phase and will immediately attack her. Run sideways to dodge her laser, run away when she uses the big blue orb, for everything else run towards her. Use a melee weapon that deals physical damage, as she is immune to magic. Every hit will interrupt her, and you wolves will also keep hitting her from all sides which keeps her unable to do anything. When she is below 50% health she will start to summon spirits of her own, just run away and circle back to her and hit her a few times and repeat. It’s a difficult and long fight but with the help of your Wolf Ashes you can take down half her health very fast. Below is a video of the boss fight, playing a mage build with a basic weapon and no points in melee damage.

Step 2: Talk to Rennala, use Larval Tear to Respec

After defeating Rennala, you can talk to her in the same room where the fight took place. Pick the “Rebirth” dialogue to respec your character, reset all attributes and redistribute all attribute points. This requires Larval Tears. See Elden Ring Larval Tear Locations.

Use the “Cosmetics” dialogue to change the looks of your character. Anything from the character creation tool can still be reset and changed, except your starting class and starting attributes.
