Introduction

Welcome to the Nioh 3 Trophy Guide! Nioh 3 takes place in an open world, unlike the first two games that followed a linear mission design. After a short prologue you are put in the open world. The game is divided into 4 Main Regions that take place in different times of history (Warring States, Heian, Antiquity, Bakumatsu). Each main region has multiple-sub regions with their own collectible trackers. The main missions are shorter this time. Instead, the game focuses on open world exploration with over 1000 collectibles and a new type of quest called Myths. There are 39 Myths which are open world mini-quests, but there are also linear Sub Missions like the previous games. The game is easier than Nioh 1 and 2 due to various new features. The combat has gotten an overhaul with the new Ninja style that lets you throw ranged Ninjutsu from a safe distance (Shuriken, Explosives etc). In Ninja style your attacks use less Ki (stamina) and you deal more critical damage from behind. You can still use the old stance-based system in Samurai style with all of the old weapons, but the new Ninja style makes the game more accessible for players of all skill levels. As usual with these games, the beginnings are the hardest, and it gets gradually easier as you unlock more features. The game rewards thorough exploration, the most efficient path is to grab the collectibles as you go, then you’ll have an easier time with bosses. Platinum is considerably faster and less grindy than the first two games. Despite the large amount of collectibles everything is quick to find and gets marked on the map automatically.

Step 1: Finish the Story, Myths, Collectibles

Play through the story and get 100% Collectibles and Myths (Side Quests) in all regions along the way. They give useful rewards to make the game easier. Especially the Kodama are important as they give you more Elixirs (healing charges). You also get permanent boosts to your Attack, Defense, and Luck from completing the collectibles in each region. If you rush the main missions you’d have a difficult time with bosses, but if you do all side content you will be stronger.

All Collectibles get marked automatically on the map after you reach Exploration Level 4. Each collectible you find increases the Exploration Level for that region. On the map press :r2: to view the completion tracker. Some items are gated behind “Spirit Veins” and require backtracking after progressing the story. Enemy Bases are often gated behind Myths or Main Missions. If you can’t reach something, don’t worry about it, continue with the story and come back for it later during Cleanup.

Nioh 3 has over 1000 collectibles total, but for trophies only 460 are needed. The following aren’t needed and can be skipped: Valuables, Nurikabe, Crucible Wraiths, Crucible Spikes. Everything else is fully needed.

The only thing to watch out for is to activate all Shrines and Bodhisattva Statues during Missions. They are the fast travel points where you respawn and level up. You have to walk very close to them so they count as “unlocked”. A bunch of these are found exclusively during Missions and aren’t tracked on the open world map. If you run past them, it could get annoying to figure out later which ones you are missing and you’d have to replay all Missions again. Luckily, they are always on the direct main path in plain sight and get marked on the map. You practically walk into them automatically, they are never on side paths and nothing is hidden. You don’t need to watch out for anything else, enjoy the game as you like!

For full Collectible Maps refer to the Nioh 3 Collectible Guide. For help with bosses refer to the Nioh 3 Boss Guide.

Step 2: Cleanup (Optional)

If you played thoroughly you will have earned the Platinum with the endboss. If you have anything left after the story, you can still do it in free roam or through Mission Replay. All areas are still explorable after the story. All missions can be replayed through the Battle Scroll at Shrines.

If you’re missing collectibles, refer to the Collectible Guide or view them by type below:

Crucible Arts Adopter
Learned a Martial Art from a Crucible weapon for the first time.
Bronze
Crucible Weapons are dropped by enemies in Crucibles. You will get a bunch of these automatically from the first story-related Crucible. Crucible Weapons have a red skull icon in the inventory: .

Equip such a weapon and kill enemies with it until the trophy unlocks. This won’t take long, just a few minutes of farming kills will suffice. Each Crucible Weapon has a “Crucible Art”, which you unlock permanently by raising weapon familiarity to the maximum. You can view the familiarty progress from the inventory when hovering over the weapon, it’s the blue bar above the attack value. When this reaches the maximum on a Crucible Weapon, the trophy will unlock.

Arts Proficiency
Defeated 10 enemies with a Strong Attack or a Martial Art enhanced via Arts Proficiency.
Bronze
In Samurai Style, in the bottom right corner of the screen you will see a circle that fills up with each attack (blue color). When this circle is full, your next :triangle: heavy attack will be glowing blue. This hit must kill an enemy, 10 times total. Damage the enemy with :square: light attacks first, then do the final hit with a glowing :triangle: attack when the blue circle is full.
Ninjutsu
Defeated 10 enemies with Ninjutsu.
Bronze
Ninjutsu are the special ranged attacks you perform while in Ninja Style (throwing Shuriken, Flames, Bombs etc). First, press :r2: to switch from Samurai Style to Ninja Style. Then press :r1: + :square: / :r1: + :triangle: / :r1: + :x: to use Ninjutsu. The final hit that kills the enemy must be from a Ninjutsu. Kill 10 enemies total with this. It’s very easy on flying insects, just throw 2 Shuriken and they will die. The Ninjutsu recharges automatically when you land melee attacks.
Burst Break
Successfully activated Burst Break 10 times.
Bronze
When an enemy is charging up a red glowing attack, press :r2: just before the attack hits you to perform a “Burst Break”. This will interrupt the enemy’s attack. Do this 10 times total. Larger enemies often use red glowing attacks, and bosses also use them frequently. You can farm this against any big enemy. Getting the timing correct can take a few tries, if you press :r2: too early or too late it won’t work. There is a short delay between the enemy starting to glow red and performing the attack. You’ll want to press :r2: when the enemy starts the attack animation, half a second before it hits you.
Guardian Spirit’s Aid
Successfully activated a Guardian Spirit Skill Burst Break for the first time.
Bronze
Guardian Spirit Skill Burst Break is unlocked after defeating the 5th Main Boss “Takeda Shingen” in Main Mission: A Fiery Invasion. You must advance the story until you unlock this feature.

Then you can press :l1: + :square: when an enemy is charging up a red glowing attack to interrupt it. This works just like regular Burst Breaks for trophy Burst Break, but using your Guardian Spirit Skill instead. You will see a circle light up at the bottom of the screen, left of your health when the Skill is charged up. You charge it by landing any attacks on enemies, then after one use must charge it again.

Just like regular Burst Breaks, you’ll want to press :l1: + :square: just before a red glowing attack hits you. If you press too early or too late it won’t work.

Yokai Manipulator
Used a Summoning Seal to summon a yokai for the first time.
Bronze
First, you need to get a Soul Core, these are random drops from stronger enemies. They look like red hearts. Afterward bring the Soul Core to a shrine without dying, this will cleanse it. You can equip it at the Shrine > Manage Soul Core > Onmyo Box > Yang Position. Then you will get the prompt to assign the Summoning Seal to the Shortcut inventory. It lets you summon a Yokai that briefly fights for you. Use the shortcut once to use the Summoning Seal against an enemy, this unlocks the trophy.

If it shows a warning that the Soul Core can’t be used, you will first have to defeat  Crucible Wraiths. Keep defeating Crucible Wraiths and collecting Soul Cores from enemies until you get one that you can use for summoning. You will get plenty of these naturally throughout the game.

Explorer
Raised your Exploration Level to 4 in any area.
Bronze
Every region in the open world has an “Exploration Level”. Level 4 is the highest. You increase the Exploration Level by finding any Collectibles. After reaching Warring States (first open world map), you can open the map and press :r2: on any region to view your Exploration Level and how many collectibles you found.

The collectibles that give the biggest boost to Exploration Level are Enemy Bases, Lesser Crucibles, Myths. Explore a region thoroughly and pick up enough Collectibles to reach Exploration Level 4. At Exploration Level 2 the whole map gets unfogged, and at Level 4 all collectibles get marked automatically which makes it easy to find remaining items.

Armor’s Real Value
Activated all set bonus effects for an equipment set.
Bronze
For this you must equip a full gear set. When a piece of armor is part of a set it will have a green text in the item stats, for example “Purifying Presence” set from equipping all “High Priest’s” armor. Each region has some unique gear that frequently drops throughout the region. Early on sets are rare, but you’ll get them pretty commonly in the final region Bakumatsu.

Before selling gear check the names and equip all with the same green text. You can also “lock” or “favorite” the gear so you don’t accidentally sell it (press :square: in the inventory). Some sets have 5 pieces of armor only, and some sets feature a 6th piece from Weapons or Accessories.

Don’t worry about this, in the late game you will get loads of set pieces, you can carry 2000 items total and will get a bunch of sets naturally. Just remember to go through the items before selling them.

Latest Masterpiece
Forged an item for the first time.
Bronze
First, you must unlock the “Eternal Rift” area where the blacksmith is located (hub area where NPCs are). You unlock this automatically from story progress shortly after finishing the first Crucible. Then talk to the blacksmith, choose “Forge” and make any item. To get the required materials, choose the “Disassemble” option at the blacksmith and sacrifice some gear you don’t need.

You can return to the Eternal Rift any time by pressing :l3: on the map screen.

Match Made in Heaven
Performed a Soul Match for the first time.
Bronze
Soul Match can be performed at the Blacksmith in the Eternal Rift area (the hub where you talk to NPCs). It allows you to raise the level of your weapons to your current character level. The Eternal Rift area is automatically unlocked from story progress, then you can return to it anytime by pressing :l3: on the map screen.

To make Soul Match available at the blacksmith, you must complete the Myth “A Fierce Flame”. This quest is automatically started during Main Mission: The Hamamatsu Incident, after leaving the Eternal Rift for the first time. You can’t miss it. Track it from the “Progress Menu”. The objectives will be marked on the map.

After finishing the Myth, talk to the blacksmith and pick the “Soul Extraction” option. Select some low level equipment you don’t need, it will be sacrificed to get Soul Ore (material needed for Soul Match). Then use the “Soul Match” option, select any piece of equipment and how many levels you want to raise it, this unlocks the trophy.

Remodeler
Remodeled a piece of equipment for the first time.
Bronze
Go to the blacksmith in the Eternal Rift (unlocked after first Crucible) > click “Remodel” > select any item and choose any attribute to remodel > click the “remodel” text to confirm and the trophy will unlock.

Unimpeded
Used all methods to traverse Spirit Veins.
Bronze
Spirit Veins are a new feature in Nioh 3. They are shortcuts in the open world that require specific Guardian Spirits to use. All required Guardian Spirits come automatically from story progress.

This trophy is guaranteed to unlock automatically while going for all collectible trophies, for which you have to use all types of Spirit Veins anyway.

Guardian Spirit Unlocks:

  • Nekomata = automatically equipped when you reach the open world map after completing Main Mission 2: Escape from Hitokoto Slope.
  • Kongojishi = automatic reward from Main Mission: Tiger’s Cause (finished Main Region 1: Warring States).
  • Narikama Tanuki = automatic reward from Main Mission: Tiger’s Cause (finished Main Region 1: Warring States).
  • Kurama Tengu = automatic reward from Main Mission: Sacred Mountain Defiled (first mission in Main Region 2: Heian).
  • Oh = automatic reward from Main Mission: Frozen City, Blazing Tree, after defeating the main boss “Minamoto no Yoritomo”
  • Kusanagi (Ninja) = automatic story reward from Main Mission: The Spirit Tree Village, after defeating the main boss “Kusanagi” (first mission in Main Region 3: Antiquity).
  • Shami-Choro = automatic story reward from Main Mission: The Sweet Sound of Strings, after defeating the main boss “Takasugi Shinsaku” (first mission in Main Region 4: Bakumatsu)
  • Golden Shachi = automatic story reward from Main Mission: Scion of the Gods, after defeating the main boss “Okita Soji & Tokugawa Yoshinobu” (finished second Crucible in Main Region 4: Bakumatsu)
  • Murakumo = automatic story reward from Main Mission: A Sinister End, after defeating the main boss “Hiruko” (the final story mission in the game)

Guardian Spirits from Side Missions are not needed to traverse any Spirit Veins.

Teamwork
Completed three missions during Expeditions or with NPCs. (Includes Acolytes.)
Bronze
For this you can summon the Acolytes from Blue Graves throughout missions. This spawns an AI helper that fights alongside you. Finish the mission with the Acolyte being alive, repeat for a total of 3 missions. You can also find Acolyte Graves while offline disconnected from the internet, so it’s doable completely solo. Some Myths and Side Missions also feature NPC helpers that can’t die and will count towards the trophy automatically.

If you want to play online you can also go to a shrine and pick “Co-Op” > “Expeditions” > “Mission Mode” to search for other players.

A Scampuss’s Best Friend
Traded a furball with a Scampuss in the Eternal Rift for the first time.
Bronze
First you need to unlock the “Eternal Rift” area, this is the hub world where merchants and friendly NPCs can be talked to. You unlock the Eternal Rift area automatically, after finishing the first Crucible.

Then you need to collect a bunch of  Scampuss Collectibles, they get marked on the map automatically when you reach Exploration Level 4. They are the little cats that roll around and you have to follow them until you can pet them. These will give “Furball” items.

After grabbing a bunch of these, return to the Eternal Rift (press :l3: on Map screen). There should now be a big Scampuss Cat on the side of the Eternal Rift, it will be marked with an icon on the map. Talk to it and give it a furball. This unlocks the trophy.

You can bring it more furballs to get rewards like Handbooks that unlock new skills. Though for trophies you only need to give it one Furball.

Kunimatsu’s Pride
Defeated the Demon of Pride and glimpsed Kunimatsu’s emotions.
Bronze

Demon of Pride is a hidden optional boss with a golden chest icon on the map. It’s found in Warring States > Iinoya > Shrine: Sengan Waterfall > use the Spirit Vein slightly north from the shrine to reach the golden chest on the map. You need to backtrack later after progressing the story to get the required Guardian Spirit (automatic story unlock). It’s a high level boss, so it’ll be easier to do it after the story.

Kunimatsu’s Envy
Defeated the Demon of Envy and glimpsed Kunimatsu’s emotions.
Bronze

Demon of Envy is a hidden optional boss with a golden chest icon on the map. It’s found in Heian > Hachijo > Anneibo Temple > when facing the shrine turn left and climb up the scaffolding, then you can drop into a slightly hidden cave with this boss at the end. There’s a Spirit Vein on the path that leads to it. It’s a high level boss, so it’ll be easier to do it after the story.

Kunimatsu’s Obsession
Defeated the Demon of Obsession and glimpsed Kunimatsu’s emotions.
Bronze

Demon of Obsession is a hidden optional boss with a golden chest icon on the map. It’s found in Bakumatsu > Nijo Castle > the golden chest in the north-west corner. To reach it you must first go to Mibu region, drop down from Shrine: Mibu Temple – Main Gate (from the hill south of the golden chest icon).

Senji Toyo
Recovered the blacksmith’s memory.
Bronze
Unlocks by completing Myth: Memories in the Blade. This is started by talking to the Blacksmith after reaching Main Region 2: Heian and defeating the main boss “Great Tengu” in Main Mission: Sacred Mountain Defiled. To finish the Myth you must find 3 hidden swords – see Hidden Sword Locations.
Ruckus in the Sanctuary
In “Black Feather Sanctuary,” drove out all crows from Matsuo-taisha Shrine and defeated Otoroshi.
Bronze

“Black Feather Sanctuary” is a story mission in Main Region 2: Heian. The mission is unmissable, you will automatically play it for main story progress. In Heian when you get 3 yellow mission markers it will be the one furthest west in Sagano sub-region. You can replay this mission at any time afterward from Shrines > Battle Scrolls > Heian > Black Feather Sanctuary.

During this mission you will see 3 crows sitting on Torii Gates that shoot purple projectiles at you. For this trophy, you have to shoot the crows so they disappear before you get close to them. Use any gun or bow and shoot them with :l2: + :r2: . The crows don’t have to die, they just need to take damage and disappear. There are 3 crows total throughout the mission.

The first is at the start of the mission in front of you, directly after the first shrine. The second is after the second shrine after going through an ice cave. The third is after the third shrine when entering a bigger temple area.

After shooting all crows, simply proceed to the end of the mission normally and defeat the mission boss called “Otoroshi”. As soon as he’s defeated, the trophy will unlock. If it doesn’t unlock you can replay the mission as often as you want.

Pain, Pain, Go Away
In “A Sinister End,” repelled all of Murakumo’s attacks.
Bronze
“A Sinister End” is the final story mission in the game. The mission is unmissable.

Throughout the mission, you will get attacked by a bird enemy that casts lightning at you from a distance. After it shoots lighting it will fly away and you meet the bird again at several points throughout the mission. For the trophy, shoot the bird at every opportunity so that it flies away.

The trophy actually seems to unlock automatically for most players even if you don’t shoot the bird and get hit by its lightning. How the trophy is likely meant to work is that you shoot the bird so it flies away before you get close to it, similar to how the crows in “Black Feather Sanctuary”. Being hit by the lightning is fine and doesn’t void the trophy. The final encounter with the bird is during the “Death Veil” fight and the trophy pops immediately when the bird flies away for the last time. If you don’t get the trophy, you can replay the mission afterward from the Battle Scroll at any shrine.

Distant Memories
Bathed with Himiko in “Dark Roots,” then recalled Naotora’s incident in “Apparition of Ryotan Temple.”
Bronze

This trophy takes place across two different main missions.

  1. Dark Roots is a main story mission in Antiquity era (replayable via Battle Scroll). At the end of the mission, just before the boss, you must sit in the hot spring. After activating the last elevator, it will be at the foot of the stairs on the left, before the room with red water where you pick up an item to open the path to the boss. Just sit in the hot spring and wait for Himiko to finish her dialogue. Finish the mission afterward if you are doing it via the replay function.

  2. Now go to any Shrine > Battle Scrolls > Warring States > The Apparition of Ryotan Temple. This is an old mission from earlier in the game that you have to replay. Enter the hot spring during this mission, after dropping down a roof, in the backyard pond area, behind a Nurikabe wall. Himiko will then have a unique dialogue and says “why does this feel so familiar?”, after which the trophy unlocks.

Like-Minded Friends
In “Seeking Rare Yokai,” satisfied Toriyama Sekien with a painting of Kusanagi.
Bronze

“Seeking Rare Yokai” is a Myth in the final main region “Bakumatsu”. The trophy unlocks automatically by finishing this Myth. As part of the objectives, you will talk to Himiko and draw a painting of her Spirit Guardian “Kusanagi “, this is unmissable. After completing the Myth you unlock the trophy. As a prerequisite you must have done the Myth “Yokai Horde Picture Scroll” in Heian region.

Quest Walkthroughs:

  1. Yokai Horde Picture Scroll
  2. Seeking Rare Yokai
Dung Ball Roller
Helped Tatsumaro the Dung Lover connect with Takechiyo.
Silver

Step 1: Finish the Myth “Putrid Paradise” in Heian > Hachijo. It will be marked on the map, in the eastern half of Hachijo by talking to a man who stands on a roof in the swamp area. The objectives will all be marked, you must sit in a hot spring with him and then protect him while he walks home.

Step 2: After the Putrid Paradise Myth, the Dung Lover will spawn in the Eternal Rift (press :l3: on world map to go there). Climb down the ladder behind the Blacksmith to reach him in the underground cave. He will be marked on the map.

Step 3: Give him 30 Dung Balls to get the trophy (Noble Dung Balls count as 2 normal Dung Balls). Dung Balls are random drops from enemies and you can also find them on corpses (yellow item pickups) throughout the rest of the game. To make this less grindy, keep this as one of your last trophies.

When you are done with the everything else, come back to the Dung Lover. If you don’t have 30 Dung Balls by that point you can keep farming the rest.

Where to Farm Dung Balls: You can farm Dung Balls from the flying wasp enemies. A good farming spot is in Warring States > Tokaido > Shrine: Cape Cavern (the region in the south-east of Warring States, southernmost shrine). From the shrine turn around and you’ll find 2 wasps on the left and 2 wasps on the right. On average every 30 Wasp Kills they will drop a Dung Ball. It will appear as an item pickup on the right side of the screen in white text. After you kill them, fast travel to the shrine to make them respawn, rinse and repeat. It’s a boring process but they die in one hit (throwing Shuriken or Kunai in Ninja style works great). Other enemies can drop Dung Balls too but this spot is pretty reliable and quick. Roughly every 8 runs you should get a Dung Ball, sometimes it takes more and sometimes less.

Nothing Left to Learn
Completed veteran missions with Yagyu Munenori and Hattori Hanzo.
Bronze
Veteran missions are available when reaching the last Main Region “1864 CE – Bakumatsu”, as soon as you get main mission “A New Era”. Then return to Eternal Rift and talk to Yagyu (Samurai) and Hattori Hanzo (Ninja) and play their missions at the shrine from the Battle Scrolls menu.

You must also beat their “Novice” mission (available during Main Region 1: Warring States, after first Crucible) and “Adept” mission (available when reaching Main Region 2: Heian).

Novice and Adept are short fights against groups of enemies in the dojo, and Veteran is a short miniboss fight against Yagyu and Hattori themselves. Against Yagyu you are forced to play in Samurai style, and easy strategy is to use a Spear and do heavy attacks when he comes running towards you to whittle down his health one attack at a time. Against Hattori you are forced to play in Ninja style, an easy strategy is to use Dual Ninja Swords to land attacks quickly and charge up your Ninjutsu, then throw your Ninjutsu from a safe distance.

Great guide. Thanks for the hard work.
Quick q – do you know how the progress from the demo carries over in regards to trophies?

Do you need to have played Nioh 1 and 2 for story purposes or can you drop in to this one?

No need to have played Nioh 1/2 imo. Nioh 3 is the easiest of the 3 and also plays quite differently from the first two games, due to being an open world game and having a whole new combat form (Ninja style).
The only disadvantage to starting with Nioh 3 is that the gameplay features can feel overwhelming. The weapons from the first two games are back and they added a whole lot more. For new players I’d recommend playing in Ninja style with Dual Ninja Swords (pressing R2 to switch from Samurai to Ninja). That’s what I used the whole game.

      I haven’t tried co-op, did everything solo.
