Introduction

Welcome to the Marathon Trophy Guide! Marathon is an extraction shooter developed by Bungie, set in the same universe as the original Marathon series that was released prior to Bungie creating the Halo series. Gameplay-wise, Marathon plays very close to Destiny 2 in terms of shooting and action, but the overall progression setup is very similar to Arc Raiders and anyone who have played this should feel right at home with the progress and objective setup. Some of the standout changes in Marathon are the choice of which Runner Shell you enter matches as, which function similar to the classes in Destiny and determine the abilities you can use during matches on top of your normal loadout. You also have the choice of playing as the Shell Rook, which can only be played solo with a random loadout, but always enters matches around halfway through for the purpose of scavenging as many items as possible without the pressure of using your own gear in a full length game.

Trophy-wise, the list is set up to have very general requirements, similar to how Bungie changed the list for Destiny 2 over time. There are mostly cumulative trophies for completing basic actions such as looting, defeating other players or AI, and leveling Factions and Seasonal Level. The main end goal will be to earn 100 Season Levels, which function as your overall account level. At the time of the game’s launch, seasons are expected to last for around 3 months and the wording of this trophy implies that it is cumulative, but this won’t be able to be confirmed until the next in-game season.

Step 1: Get Used to the Game, Earn Most Cumulative Trophies

Starting out you should get used to the game, work on the Priority Faction Contracts as they become available, and complete most of the cumulative trophies. You should aim to complete the CyberAcme Contracts first, as these are the ones that unlock access to the other 5 Factions.

You aren’t required to play as specific Shells or use specific items during gameplay, but it is recommended you try out each one and see what you prefer playing as. If you are primarily playing solo then Assassin is an easy option due to their invisibility for getting out of bad situations or sneaking up on other enemies if this is how you’d prefer to play. If you are playing as a group you should try to play as a different Shell from your teammates, so that you can complement each other with your abilities.

Step 2: VIP Faction Status, Capstone Upgrades, 100 Season Levels

Once you’ve played for a while and got used to the game, the main objective you need to work toward first is 7 Capstone Upgrades. These are upgrades within each Faction skill tree that are able to be unlocked once you unlock a certain number of other skills in each tree. You’ll need to keep collecting Credits and Materials to unlock other upgrades, along with leveling the Factions. The next goal will be to reach VIP Faction status, and you should keep completing contracts for the one that you want to earn this with. Finally, you will need to earn 100 Season Levels for the longest overall objective.

Marathon Trophy Guide

Escape Will Make Me…
Obtain all trophies in Marathon.
Platinum
Earn all other trophies in Marathon to unlock Platinum (no DLC required).
Welcome to Tau Ceti
Complete or skip your initial run.
Silver
This trophy is awarded for either completing the initial tutorial run, or completing your first normal run if you choose to skip the tutorial. If you never played the beta/server tests or if you’ve never played an Extraction Shooter before it’s highly recommended to play through the full match to learn the basic mechanics. If you want to skip the tutorial you can choose the “Leave Game” option in the pause menu, but you won’t receive any of the inventory items you would normally get from the tutorial run.
Everything Runs on CyberAcme
Re-establish communication with the Sol system.
Silver
This trophy is for completing the first Priority Contract for CyberAcme, the first Faction available in the game. After being introduced to them you are given the contract Welcome to Tau Ceti, which is a 2 part contract that introduces you to some of the basic mechanics related to completing contracts (go to a specific location, scan an item). After you have completed both parts you will earn this trophy.

Run Executable
Complete 21 runs.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for completing a total of 21 runs, either through dying or successfully exfilling.
Run, Repeat
Exfil successfully 7 times.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for finishing a total of 7 runs by successfully leaving at an Exfil point. In Marathon Exfil points become available approximately every 5 minutes after a match starts, with there generally being three available on the map at a time, two normal and one guarded. After activating the Exfil point you will need to wait approximately 45 seconds for it to become active, where a circle will appear on the ground. Stay in the circle for 10 seconds (even if you are downed) to successfully Exfil from the match.

Guarded Exfil points function the same as normal points except they will always summon a group of AI enemies when they are triggered. Typically this is a group of 4 – 5 enemies with a Commander, so unless you are very low on health and resources using the Guarded Exfil points may be a good option if you feel confident dealing with a Commander on your own.

This is Marathon
Experience shell death for the first time.
Silver
This trophy is awarded for dying during a match for the first time.
Jackpot
Loot 777 containers.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for looting a total of 777 containers. Containers are spread throughout the game world, and contain various loot items for you to pick up. You should generally search any containers you see when you aren’t in combat, as different containers provide XP to different Factions depending on the type of container you search. Containers that have been opened by other players can still be searched if there are items left in them, but if a container is completely empty then you can’t interact with it to search it.
Anti-Establishment
Eliminate 147 UESC units.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for eliminating a total of 147 UESC units during gameplay. The UESC is the AI controlled enemy group who appear throughout all maps, typically around the major map points and guarding buildings. Defeat a total of 147 of any of these units to earn this trophy.
RIP UESC
Eliminate 28 UESC Commanders.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for eliminating a total of 28 UESC commander units during gameplay. The commanders are specific heavy-armor versions of the UESC enemies that will sometimes appear along with the others in large groups, or around specific map points. They are differentiated from other enemies by having purple overshielding when shot and having green/yellow square armor pieces behind their shoulders.

Commanders take a large amount of damage and can be very hard to fight even if they are on their own, as they typically use grenades and inflict negative status effects if you are hit by certain attacks. Be sure you are prepared for a fight if you encounter one, and perhaps take out other enemies nearby before focusing on the Commander. There are Commander versions of Assault, Grenadier, Ghost, and Scout types of UESC enemies, so be aware that you won’t always see the same type of enemy when you encounter them.

End Run
Eliminate 14 rival Runners.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for eliminating a total of 14 other players during matches. Eliminating players occurs when they fully die, either from their revive time expiring or finishing them off yourself.

PvP combat is a major component of Marathon. Starting out the time-to-kill is very fast, so surprising enemies is highly recommended when trying to engage in combat with other Runners.

Complete 35 Contracts.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for completing a total of 35 contracts. Contracts are the missions that are given from the Faction vendors that require completing specific objectives during matches. There are two types of contracts: Priority and Repeatable. Priority contracts are the “story” related ones, that advance the Faction storyline and have specific set objectives you complete once. Repeatable contracts are randomly given objectives that can be completed repeatedly for a smaller XP and random rewards, but don’t have a limited amount per Faction vendor. You can reroll the current Repeatable Contract using Credits if you don’t like the current one on a specific faction.

Currently only one contract can be set as “active” at a time, and that is the only one you can make progress to during a match. It is recommended to try and focus on the Priority contracts first, as this gives much larger XP rewards, gear, and unlocks the other Factions and Armory features. If you are playing with others and want to play on a map where you don’t have an objective available with a Priority contract you should make sure to activate a Repeatable one so that you always have an objective you can be working toward.

Reliable Asset
Reach VIP status with a Faction.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for reaching VIP status with any Faction. Faction Rank is increased by either completing Contracts for the specific Faction, or by completing certain actions during matches. Different types of in-game action (looting certain containers, defeating UESC or Runners, etc) contribute to different Factions, which you can view in the Faction menu by viewing the AGENT heading and checking the REPUTATION GAIN info on the right side.

At the time of the game’s launch, Factions have a maximum level of 30, and it appears that this is what counts as VIP rank. Certain upgrades require VIP Rank 1, which is specified separately from normal 1 – 29 Ranks, so this is likely what this trophy requires.

Cutting Edge
Unlock 7 capstone upgrades.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for unlocking a total of 7 capstone upgrades in the various Factions’ skill trees. Capstone upgrades are significant upgrades that are unlocked on each Faction once you unlock a certain number of other upgrades within that Faction’s skill tree. The capstone upgrades appear at the bottom of each skill tree, and can be upgraded once you reach the required number of other upgrades without any other Credit or material requirement.

The capstone upgrades require different numbers of other upgrades depending on how many total are in that Faction’s tree, spread out evenly so that the 6th capstone requires unlocking all other upgrades.

Regular upgrades are purchased using Credits, along with certain common materials such as Unstable Diodes and Gunmetal, along with requiring a specific minimum rank in that Faction. You can see the item requirements by selecting the nodes in the skill trees, along with being able to track the items. This will then mark locations in-game where you are likely to find them, along with highlighting them while looting.

Seasoned Veteran
Earn 100 Season Levels.
Gold
This trophy is awarded for earning 100 Season Levels. During each in-game Seasons you have an overall level on top of the Faction levels. The Season level is contributed to from general actions taken in the game, instead of for specific actions like the Faction levels. Finishing runs, killing enemies, and collecting loot all contribute to Season Level progress. You also receive an extra 50 XP and 50% overall bonus for your first 10 runs each week.

The wording of this trophy implies that it is a cumulative 100 Season Levels. Each in-game Season is expected to last for 3 months, at which point Season Level would be reset along with other progress in a wipe typical of other extraction shooters. Until the second Season there won’t be confirmation on whether this trophy is cumulative or not.

This would be my first Destiny/ARC type game. Is the difficulty curve a big one – plan on playing mostly solo?

It looks like in the 100 hours or so you need to play this you’ll probably get everything just from playing the game naturally.
