Silent Hill f All Character Upgrade (Ema) Locations

September 22, 2025 by Archavia 7 Comments

Silent Hill f contains 22 Character Upgrades (Ema). These can be used alongside Faith at Hokora Shrines to upgrade various stats. Character Upgrades will be needed for the following trophy:

  • 18 needed for :bronze: Close to the Sun

Character Upgrades (Ema) are little wooden plaques that when used with Faith at a Hokora Shrine, can increase your Stamina, Sanity, Health or Omamori Slots. Omamori Slots upgrades are not needed for the trophy, but it is still highly recommended to find them all as extra Omamori Slots is very benficial. These can be found on New Game, New Game+ and New Game+2. Any Ema you have already found will be replaced with offerings on subsequent playthroughs.

New Game (First Playthrough)

Ebisugaoka Second Visit

Character Upgrade 1
Head east on the northern road, you will find an Ema sitting in front of a house opposite a Hokora Shrine. Ema can be used at a Hokora Shrine alongside Faith to increase your max Health, Sanity, Stamina or Omamori Slots.

Character Upgrade 2
After going through the storehouse, ignore Shu for now and follow the path east and enter the yard of a house to find this on the edge of a trough.

Corridors

Character Upgrade 3
Follow the corridors northwest to find a building. Right next to the door will be an Ema on a crate.

Ebisugaoka Third Visit

Character Upgrade 4
After going through a house in the southern section of the map, ignore the right path that leads to a Hokora Shrine and instead cross the bridge to follow the left path. After fighting some enemies, you will find this on a low wall.

Worship Hall

Character Upgrade 5
In the area with Shu’s Memories Puzzle, go into the western room and pull the blue/red lever. Go through the blue door and this will be on a shelf at the back, near an enemy.

Ebisugaoka Fourth Visit

Character Upgrade 6
As you progress through this area, you will eventually crawl under a broken tree into an area filled with enemy corpses. Halfway up this path where the enemies start attacking you, there will be an Ema on a rock between some trees.

Main Hall

Character Upgrade 7
After completing the third ritual, you will be able to reveal hidden rooms (indicated by fox artwork and blood near the walls) by holding :l2: in front of them. Once in the main hall, go north slightly and open the wall here to find this inside on the right.

Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit

Character Upgrade 8
As you approach your house, you will see the Hokora Shrine from the very beginning of the game. Instead of going up towards the house, instead head down through the streets and go left at the truck that blocked your path previously. Sitting on a bench at the end of this path will be an Ema.

Shimizu Residence

Character Upgrade 9
After using the Calendar to access the second area, go into the first room on the left, then head south through the hallway into another room to find this.

Character Upgrade 10
After using the Calendar to access the third area, in the northwest corner of the hallway, behind a watering can.

Ebisugaoka Sixth Visit

Character Upgrade 11
After the second forced fight, take a right at the blue truck and this will be on a red barrel, opposite the Hokora Shrine.

New Game+ (Second Playthrough)

On New Game+, you will now be able to open Inari-sama Boxes and Doors using the Brooch. These will allow you to find new upgrades.

Ebisugaoka First Visit

Character Upgrade 12
After the first Hokora Shrine, go down the stairs and immediately turn right. You will spot a shoe box that can be opened, which will contain this upgrade.

Shrine Path

Character Upgrade 13
During the Shrine Vault Puzzle, you will be able to access a new section in the southeast. Take the left path and you will find an Ema on a rock.

Ebisugaoka Second Visit

Character Upgrade 14
Immediately past the Hokora Shrine on the northern horizontal road, turn left to find this in a garden by some statues.

Ebisugaoka Third Visit

Character Upgrade 15
After going through the alleyway section in the south of the map. Go up the short set of stairs after the next Hokora Shrine and turn left. Go behind the building and this will be on a stool by the back door.

Worship Hall

Character Upgrade 16
In the western area, shimmy through the gap in the wall to the south to find a door you can open. Inside you will find both items.

Ebisugaoka Fourth Visit

Character Upgrade 17
Go up the stairs until you reach a gazebo, then walk around it to find this box on the ground.

Main Hall

Character Upgrade 18
As you already have your Fox Arm, you will be able to immediately go through the doors in the southeast corner of the Main Hall. Go up the stairs twice and deal with the enemies, reveal the hidden room with :l2: and then open the door.

Once you go through the Inari-sama door, head up to the temple and this will be sitting on a cabinet on the left side of the temple.

Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit

Character Upgrade 19
After going through the park, this will be sitting in the yard of the house before the Hokora Shrine.

Shimizu Residence

Character Upgrade 20
In the first area of the residence, go along the west corridor and north two rooms, to the room before the Photo Room. This box will be sitting to the side.

Treasure Hall

Character Upgrade 21
Once you enter the puzzle room for the third crest (with all the fox statues and six doors), approach the door on your immediate right and it will have the Inari-sama design on it. This will be n a cabinet in the back of this room.

New Game+2 (Third Playthrough)

Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit

Character Upgrade 22
After going through the park and completing the forced fight, go up the stairs and take the right path. You will find the final Ema next to the Ancient Jizo Statue.

That’s all of the Ema Character Upgrades. For everything else refer to Silent Hill f Collectible Guide.

I got to the Treasure hall on my NG+. And the room for Ema 21, there is just a Higashi on my table in here. No Ema. Just two letters about the Infatuated Boy and the Higashi thing. No Ema at all. Guide was pretty spot on up to here.

Same thing for me, not sure what’s going on here. Playing on Xbox if that matters.

Also strangely I received the achievement for opening all Inari doors while I was in the Shimizu Residence (when I opened a box there) — didn’t need the one here in the Treasure Hall.

This is only my second run, so I definitely wasn’t able to open this room on my first playthrough…

    Wait, disregard my previous comment.

You do NOT need to be on NG+ to get Upgrade 21 (Treasure Hall), I must have picked this up during my first run. You get the Brooch on your first run at the start of this area, so this is the only Inari-sama door you can open on the first run.

Is it possible to upgrade all stats + omamori slots with just 22 ema? Seeing as they don’t spawn again in new game+ or ++ etc, I’m afraid I won’t be able to max my stats ????

Yes there are enough Ema to fully upgrade all 4 stats.

I’m missing one ema… one single upgrade to complete… what should I do after completing NG++ (ending 4?)

Same. I’m missing one ema too. Just to double confirm, is the ema placement different for each playthrough?

Cuz im not sure if the ema i miss is from the first playthrough, ng1, or ng2.

If all placement is the same for each one, that can i follow this guide?
