Monster Hunter Wilds How to Capture Monsters

February 26, 2025 by PowerPyx Leave a Comment

In Monster Hunter Wilds you can capture Monsters instead of slaying them. By capturing a monster it will stay alive and you earn more rewards (material drops) from it.

Capturing a monster requires you to:

  1. Weaken the Monster until it’s nearly dead (you will see a skull next to its icon on your mini-map)
  2. Trap the Monster (using Shock Trap, or Pitfall Trap)
  3. Use a Tranquilizer (Tranq Bombs, Tranq Ammo) while the monster is affected by the trap

Be sure to bring the traps and tranquilizer with you and slot both to your item wheel for quick access. Traps and tranquilizers can be crafted from the “Crafting List” in your tent or pause menu. If you already have them they will be in your Item Box.

  • Item 044 Pitfall Trap = Trap Tool + Net (044 Net = Ivy + Spider Web)
  • Item 045 Shock Trap = Trap Tool + Thunderbug Capacitator
  • Item 046 Tranq Bomb = Sleep Herb + Parashroom

Trap Tool is bought from the Provisions Stockpile (merchant at basecamp). The rest is found in the open world and will be marked on the map. You can put a map marker on the materials with R3 / Right Stick, then your mount will lead you there automatically. After you have at least 1 Trap + 2 Tranq Bombs you can capture a monster.

You must significantly weaken a monster before you can capture it. Once a monster’s health is low enough for tranquilizers to be effective, it will begin to limp, and you will see a skull icon next to the monster icon on your mini-map. That’s your cue to stop attacking and ready your trap. Be careful not to deal too much more damage or the monster will die.

When the monster is near death, use the trap from your items (Shock Trap is easiest). Place it on the monster’s path, it will automatically activate when the monster walks into it. While the monster is affected by the trap, throw 2x Tranq Bombs at it to put it to sleep. Then you’ve captured it!

You must be quick because the trap only lasts for a short time. The monster won’t be captured if it breaks free before you throw the second Tranq Bomb, or if it still has too much health.

It’s recommended to equip the Tranq Bombs in the quick-slot, then you can quickly throw two of them with Square (PS5) / X (Xbox). The Shock Trap you can select from your Radial Menu if you slotted it (can customize it in your tent or from the pause menu).

You can also use tranq ammo when you’re using a ranged weapon. While you’ll be unable to carve items from your target, you’ll still gain rewards from the quest result screen. Some quests require you to capture monsters alive instead of slaying them. You must also capture 50 monsters alive for the trophy/achievement trophy Capture Pro.

Note that some monsters are immune to either Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap.

Monsters Immune to Shock Trap:

  • Rey Dau
  • Zoh Shia
  • Gypceros

Monsters Immune to Pitfall Trap:

  • Jin Dahaad
  • Zoh Shia
