To capture Yian Kut-Ku is an objective in the New Ecosystems Main Quest of Monster Hunter Wilds. This is the first time the story requires you to capture a monster alive and it doesn’t exactly tell you how to do it, so it can be confusing.
Step 1: From the Provisions Stockpile (merchant Ralph) at Scarlet Forest Basecamp, buy 2 Trap Tools.
Step 2: Enter your tent in the Basecamp > Crafting List > craft 045 Shock Trap + 046 Tranq Bomb. You need to craft AT LEAST 1 Shock Trap (alternatively, Pitfall Trap works too) + 2 Tranq Bombs. These require a few materials: Thunderug Capacitator, Sleep Herb, Parashroom. These materials are marked on the map and can be found during the hunt. Just put a marker on them on the map and your mount will carry you there automatically. When you have the materials fast travel back to basecamp and craft the items in your tent (transfer the items from your pouch to the item box first so they show up in crafting). Note: 044 Pitfall Trap & 047 Tranq Ammo & 048 Tranq Blade also work for capturing monsters.
Step 3: Now attack the Yian Kut-Ku until it’s at very low health, near death. This should be the case after it ran away twice and reaches its third location, just hit it a few more times. Place the trap on the ground, quickly select the Tranq Bombs to your quick slot. As soon as the monster walks into the trap, throw the two Tranq Bombs to put it asleep. This must happen while the monster is affected by the trap, before it breaks free. If the monster has too much health it won’t be trapped. You can quickslot the Tranq Bombs so that you can throw them in quick succession (item in bottom right of the screen).
If you aren’t successful, you can fast travel back to your tent to transfer more traps / tranq bombs from your item box to your pouch. Damage the monster some more and try again. If the monster dies you fail the quest and must redo it all again. The same concept works to capture all other monsters.
