Introduction

Welcome to the Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair Trophy Guide! Yooka, the chameleon, and Laylee, the bat, are back, but this time in an all-new 2D platformer. Capital B has risen again and this time means business. Yooka and Laylee need to rescue Queen Phoebee’s Royal Beettalion to be able to even stand a chance of beating the Impossible Lair and bringing back order to the Royal Stingdom. In fact, Capital B wants to use the Hive Mind to seize control on the Royal Stingdom. Time for this dynamic duo to step up and save the day one more time!

The game takes place in the Overworld, a big 3D map split into different areas which serves as your hub for the 20 different Chapters. Each Chapter features two levels: one level is played in the Chapter’s unaltered state, the other level is the State Change, an altered version of the Chapter which can be activated in the Overworld. Being a platformer, you can expect many Collectible types. This time we have three: the Bee Team Guards, found in Chapters and the Overworld, T.W.I.T. Coins found only in Chapters, and Tonics, found only in the Overworld. In order to get the Platinum trophy you have to find all of them with the addition of purchasing all of the Tonics. Check our guides below to know the locations of all Collectibles.

Trophies are not too bad, with the exception of :silver: Tonic Boom! which requires you to purchase all of the Tonics available in the game and :gold: HIVE won! While the former is a grind and wants you to collect a LOT of Quills to be able to afford them all, the latter is the hardest trophy of the game. You will surely see for yourself that the Lair is no joke!

Step 1: Play through all Chapters, collect all T.W.I.T. Coins and find some Tonics

For your first step, your goal is to play through both levels of all the 20 Chapters. Play through the unaltered level of each Chapter first, then activate the State Change in the Overworld and play the altered level. At the end of each level you’ll rescue a Bee Team Guard. Sometimes you won’t be able to play a State Change just yet, either because you need to open up more of the map or don’t have the right number of Quills to progress. As you play through each level, check our Guide for All T.W.I.T. Coin Locations to minimize chapter replays. These will be essential to lower Trowzer’s paywalls and uncover more of the Overworld. As you move from Chapter to Chapter, don’t forget to go hunting for Tonics every once in a while. Check our Guide for All Tonics Locations. Ideally, you want to get Catchee, Tri-Twirl and, especially, T.W.I.T. Coin Banker as soon as you can to save on time to make your first run of the game a little easier. Catchee is given to you for free after meeting with Vendi, the Tonics for the other two need to be found first and then purchased.

Step 2: Find all Tonics and rescue all Overworld Bee Team Guards

Now it’s time to collect all the Tonics you’ve got left and rescue the Bee Team Guards found in the Overworld. Check our Guides for All Tonics Locations and All Overworld Bee Team Guards Locations to find out where all of these are. During this step, make sure to stock up on enough Quills to purchase these Tonics: Less Checkmates, Googly Eyes, Quill Magnet and Quillsplosion. These will be essential in our next step.

Step 3: Quill grind to purchase all left Tonics

For your third step, you need to collect as many Quills as possible to finish purchasing all Tonics. To do this quickly and efficiently, use any of the suggested methods in the respective trophy description until you’ve reached enough Quills to purchase all Tonics. To know more about this step, check the trophy :silver: Tonic Boom!

Step 4: The Impossible Lair

Now that you’re very familiar with the game mechanics and have all 48 Bee Team Guards on your side, it’s time to take on Capital B’s most dastardly challenge yet: the Impossible Lair. Even with 48 bees, this will prove a very difficult challenge, even for hardcore platforming gamers. To know more about this step, check the trophy :gold: HIVE won!

Assemble all 48 Bee Team Guards
In order to even stand a chance of bee-ting the Impossible Lair and Capital B, you need to rescue and assemble all 48 Bee Team Guards. 40 of them are found at the end of each level. There are 20 Chapters and each one of them needs to be played in its unaltered and altered state, called State Change. To unlock the State Change, you need to activate it the Overworld. This is done by performing specific actions in specific locations. Check the Guide on How to Unlock all State Changes to know exactly what to do. The remaining 8 Bee Team Guards are found in the Overworld. Check our Guide for All Overworld Bee Team Guards Locations to find out where they are.

Four Tonic Slots!
Get a real fourth Tonic slot
In order to get a fourth Tonic slot, the game offers you two ways: either give all 200 T.W.I.T. Coins to Trowzer after his home has burnt or acquire it for 2,500 Quills from the Tonics menu. You can purchase after giving 30 T.W.I.T. Coins to Trowzer provided you have the right number of Quills. Since you need to get all Coins anyway, it would be preferable to give all Coins to Trowzer and save your Quills for Tonics that can prove very useful at the beginning of the game such as Catchee (this is given to you after meeting with Vendi), Tri-Twirl, and especially T.W.I.T Coin Banker. This last one no longer makes you lose already-collected T.W.I.T. Coins when Yooka dies. This means that you don’t have to collect them again. A big time-saver.

HIVE won!
Defeat Capital B at the end of the game
This will be the Platinum breaker for most players. To defeat Capital B at the end of the game, you have to go through the Impossible Lair and survive. The Impossible Lair is well… impossible. Unless you have first rescued most, if not all, Bee Team Guards, you won’t stand a chance. Once you’ve rescued them all, taking on the Lair is a lot more forgiving, but still puts your platforming skills to the test and can prove a rather thorny challenge. Every time you get hit or fall you lose a Guard, which means that you can get damaged a total of 48 times if you tackle the Lair with all Bee Team Guards rescued. The Lair is made up of four different sections and at the end of each one you get to face Capital B. After beating Capital B for good, you’ll have to go through a fourth section. This section is timed and you have to complete in less than 2 minutes. Every time you die, the Lair is reset and you need to start from the beginning. You can take on the Lair as many times as you want and the Bee Team Guards will always regroup ready for your next try. Achieving this trophy is very difficult, but, as it often happens with platforming challenges, it’s mostly a matter of practice and learning the traps’ pattern. One more thing: the Lair doesn’t have Checkmates nor does it allow you to equip Tonics! Good luck!
Double Mixer
Beat a level with just two play-tonics equipped
Equip any two Tonics and beat a level of your choice to unlock this trophy. Tonics can be equipped before starting a level or swapped as you play through it. Remember that you will lose all collected Quills if you decide to swap Tonics as you play. You cannot stack this trophy with the other Tonics-equipping trophies. If you need the locations of Tonics, check our Guide for All Tonics Locations.
Triple tipple
Beat a level with just three play-tonics equipped
Equip any three Tonics and beat a level of your choice to unlock this trophy. A really good combo to make your first run of the game slightly easier is Catchee (this is given to you after meeting with Vendi), Tri-Twirl, and especially T.W.I.T. Coin Banker. This last one no longer makes you lose already-collected T.W.I.T. Coins when Yooka dies. This means that you don’t have to collect them again. A big time-saver.

Four play-tonics
Beat a level with four play-tonics equipped
This requires you to first unlock a fourth Tonic slot. To find out how, refer to the trophy :silver: Four Tonic Slots! Now equip any four Tonics and beat a level of your choice to unlock this trophy.
Super tonic
Found and purchased 20 play-tonics

Just the play-tonic
Equip a Tonic
Tonics are collectibles found in the Overworld that alter your gaming experience. Tonics either make the game easier or harder, or change the visual aspect of it. They are found in the wild or by solving clues given to you by swinging signs found in the Overworld. Equip any one Tonic and beat a level of your choice to unlock this trophy.
Tonic Boom!
Purchased all Overworld play-tonics
If :gold: HIVE won! is the hardest trophy of the game, this one is without a doubt the grindiest. This trophy requires you to purchase all the Tonics featured in the game. Tonics can be purchased from the Tonic menu accessible by hitting :opt: . To purchase a Tonic you first need to find it in the Overworld and then have the right number of Quills to buy it. Check our Guide for All Tonics Locations to find out what you’re missing. As for Quills, they are found in Chapters. You can also find Quills in the Overworld, but the amount you get here is ridiculous compared to the Chapters. Tonics are very expensive, some of them even costing 1,500-2,500 quills. Most levels have around 600-900 Quills. This means that one of your endgame activities will be replaying some levels over and over again until you get enough Quills to purchase all Tonics. Tonics have a Quill bonus. If a tonic makes your gameplay experience easier, it’ll have a lower Quill bonus. Vice versa, if a tonic makes your gameplay experience more challenging, you’ll get a higher Quill multiplier. Thanks to the multiplier system, there’s a very easy and fast way to quickly purchase all Tonics. As soon as you can afford them, purchase the following tonics: Less Checkmates (Quill Bonus +1), Googly Eyes (Quill Bonus +0.5), Quill Magnet (no Bonus awarded, but it makes it considerably faster to get all Quills in a chapter), and Quillspolsion (enemies die in an explosion of Quills, increasing the total amount). This set of Tonics gets you to a multiplier of 2.5 (the multiplier is set to x1.0 by default). Now, replay Chapter 1 “Capital Causeway” with these four Tonics equipped. The level has around 600 Quills (including the ones in the secret locations). With this multiplier, it’s around 1,600 Quills per run. Each run takes 10 minutes done at full speed (you should be familiar with the level by now). The chapter is very easy and fast to complete, plus the background soundtrack is great, so you won’t get bored. Alternatively, you can replay Chapter 2 “Factory Fright” which, with the multiplier enabled, gives you even more quills (around 3,000 per run = 900 x 2.5). Just know that this level is slightly more difficult than “Capital Causeway”, but after playing the game for hours you should have no problems with even just one Checkmate.

Second method (by user “HollywoodGG”): equip the Tonics ‘Less Checkmates, Googly Eyes, Quill Banker, and Spotlight’ and play Chapter 2. Make your way to the first checkpoint (only one because of Less Checkmates), drop down and activate the feather box on the right with buddy slam, collect all Quills, move slightly forward after this section to the next feather box hidden at the top of the moving saws section, collect all quills again, then head down and left to the elevator, activate the feather on the elevator and collect all quills again. When you reach the bottom just let yourself die and repeat this whole process. You’ll earn about 750 (with the 2.7x quill multiplier) every 1-2 minutes. Just complete the level after you finished farming this area multiple times.

Third method (by user “Khalid”): equip the Tonics Less Checkmates / Googly Eyes / Quillsplosion / Spotlight and play Chapter 3 – Wild Web Woods – Wilder. Once you start the level head to the left and up the platform near the coin. Keep hitting square each time the monsters re-spawn. Once you get the quills you need, head to the check point so you don’t lose them all. Die several times till you can skip to next checkpoint. Do the same with this checkpoint till you get to the end of the level.

Mmm, sausages
Whoa, you unlocked a secret area!
The secret area the game refers to is right above Trowzer’s house in the area with the vents. To get past it, you need to lower all Paywalls first and then give Trowzer an additional 30 T.W.I.T. Coins at his place. Doing so will unlock the trophy.
Five Paywalls!! Scum.
Lower Trowzer’s Fifth Paywall
Throughout the Overworld are paywalls. These paywalls give you access to new areas and to lower them you need T.W.I.T. Coins. These Coins can be found in Chapters. Each Chapter has 5 Coins. Check our Guide for All T.W.I.T. Coins Locations to know the locations of all 5 Coins in each of the Chapters’ levels. 1 Coin for the first paywall needed, 10 for the second paywall, 15 for the third, 20 for the fourth, 25 for the fifth, 30 to access the secret area.

Thanks for the guide! There is a quicker quill farming method I have found for Tonic Boom achievement. Use Tonics ‘Less Checkmates, Googly Eyes, Quill Banker, and Spotlight’ and go to chapter 2. Make your way to the first checkpoint (only one because of tonic), drop down and activate the feather box on the right with buddy slam, collect all quills, move slightly forward after this section to the next feather box hidden at the top of the moving saws section, collect all quills again, then head down and left to the elevator, activate the feather on the elevator and collect all quills again. When you reach the bottom just let yourself die and repeat this whole process. You’ll earn about 750 (with the 2.7x quill multiplier) every 1-2 minutes. Just complete the level after you finished farming this area multiple times.

The”Four Tonic Slots!Get a real fourth Tonic slot” doesn’t work with the purchaseable tonic slot. Its
just a Trowser ripoff , because you need to equip that tonic, so you still have 3 slot available. Hence the “real” in the trophy description :D

This game is very fun for all 48 level + the overworld sandbox.
The only downside is the Impossible Lair. This is not enjoyable at all.
It took me +3 frustrating hours and 40 bees to beat this level.

I uploaded a video last night for the best farming way for quills and by far the quickest. You can search for my username Don4EveR02. Here is how:
Chapter 3 – Wild Web Woods – Wilder.
Tonic Used: Less Checkmates / Googly Eyes / Quillsplosion / Spotlight = x3.0.
This is by far the best way of farming I have found on the game.
    Hope that helps. Enjoy!

    Five Paywalls!! Scum.
    Lower Trowzer’s Fifth Paywall

Is glitchy, I unlocked the fifth paywall and Trophy/Achievement didn’t unlock, even after I unlocked the secret area by paying 30 coins.

Didn’t show up in the in-game Achievement list in the main menu either.

This happened on the Xbox One version, so not sure if others have come across it.

Update: The Achievement/Trophy won’t unlock until you walk into the new area you’ve unlocked. Simply paying Trowzer won’t unlock it.

Some of the Bee Team Guards trophies can be buggy too. Some straight-up wouldn’t unlock, and I’d have to exit the game and then unlock another Bee Team Guard elsewhere.

For example… I somehow unlocked both the Army of 20 and Army of 26 trophies at the same time… when I got my… 27th Bee.
