Introduction

Outlast is the ultimate first-person horror adventure for consoles. You are playing as a journalist and your goal is to investigate the Mount Massive Asylum. What makes it different from most other games is that you don’t have any weapons and no ability to fight whatsoever. Your only chance of survival is to run and hide. It’s one of the very few real horror games out there and has some extremely disturbing scenes. Want a good scare? Then this game is definitely for you.

The trophies are very straight forward. Five out of the eight trophies are unlocked by simply playing through the story on any difficulty. The rest is for finding all of the collectibles and beating the game on its highest difficulty. It’s worth noting that Outlast lets you create up to 50 different save games. You should always create a new save game, so you can go back if you missed a collectible.
Now enjoy the horror of Outlast!

– Roadmap –

Step 1 – Beat the game on normal difficulty, find all collectibles
Your main concern on this playthrough should be the collectibles. See PULITZER for more information. Five other trophies are story related and will unlock automatically.
There are 31 notes and 31 documents. You have to get all of them in one single playthrough. They won’t carry over to your next playthrough and cannot be obtained via chapter select. It’s best to create new save games regularly, so if you miss a collectible you can always go back. You can have up to 50 different save games at a time.Even though 100% can be obtained in one single playthrough, I highly recommend starting out on normal. The reason is that if you die on insane difficulty, all of your collectibles will be lost and you will have to start from scratch. Furthermore, normal difficulty gives you more batteries for your camera and enemies inflict less damage, which is very helpful when scouting the world for collectibles.
If you get stuck at any point, check out LUNATIC for a full video walkthrough.

After this playthrough you should only be missing the trophy for beating the game on insane difficulty.

Step 2 – Beat the game on Insane difficulty

Insane mode is based on Nightmare difficulty, but there are no checkpoints and you cannot save the game. So if you die, you will have to start from the very beginning and all your progress (collectibles etc.) will be lost. You can only carry two batteries for your camera, the spawn rate of spare batteries is reduced, boss enemies kill you in one hit and normal enemies in two hits.

This will probably take a few attempts (it took me 5 tries). The good thing is that if you sprint through the entire game it will only take you an hour. The game is really short if you already know where to go. Since the behaviour of enemies is completely scripted, you can easily replicate the same strategy every time. See LUNATIC for more information and a full walkthrough.

14 PUNISHED Silver Trophy

This trophy is story-related and cannot be missed. It will unlock after beating the eighth chapter “Underground Lab“.

16 PULITZER Gold Trophy
Collect all documents and complete all recordings

[MISSABLE] The game has a total of 62 collectibles: 31 Documents and 31 Notes. You have to collect everything in one playthrough to unlock the trophy!
The Documents can be picked up like normal collectibles. The notes are obtained by filming certain events or objects with your camcorder. Your statistics will reset when you use chapter select or start a new game. Missing a collectible means you won’t get the trophy. As a precaution you should create new save games regularly. You can have up to 50 save games. That allows you to go back if you have indeed missed something.
You can see exactly which collectibles you have found by pressing the
1 / 2 buttons.

2 LUNATIC Gold Trophy
Finish the game in Insane mode

Insane mode is based on Nightmare difficulty, but there are no checkpoints and you cannot save the game. So if you die, you will have to start from the very beginning. You can only carry two batteries for your camera, there are significantly less spare batteries (but they have the same fixed spawn points as in Nightmare mode), boss enemies kill you in one hit and normal enemies in two hits.

Before you attempt this difficulty, you should have a very good understanding of how each area is structured and where exactly you need to go. The good thing is that the game only takes an hour to beat if you rush through it. So it’s not quite as bad as it sounds.
The enemies always spawn at the same place and show the same behaviour. Once you’ve figured out a good strategy to get around them (see video guide below), you can always replicate that on any difficulty. Use that to your advantage and try to memorize the best path.

Here are some general tips:

  • First off, if you don’t feel ready for insane mode, consider doing a quick extra run on Nightmare difficulty or use chapter select to replay the sections you’ve had trouble with.
  • Increase the brightness (gamma) to its maximum. It makes it significantly easier to navigate through some dark areas. Additionally, you can increase the brightness of your TV if you want.
  • Only activate night vision when really needed to save battery life. You really don’t want to run out of batteries.
  • The best place to hide are lockers. Enemies do only open nearby lockers, but never the one where you are hiding.
  • Sometimes it’s better to just get detected and rush through an area. As long as you know where you are going it’s all fine. By getting detected you can also lure away enemies from main objectives, such as buttons or switches.
  • Enemies cannot follow you to certain areas. That’s usually the case when you go back to the previous area, or squeeze through a gap. It’s way more effective than hiding because you get rid of enemies immediately.

Managing your battery life is one of the most crucial parts on insane mode. If you don’t have any battery life left, you cannot see where you are going and will likely die in the dark.

Here is a list of the most useful spare battery spawn points:

1) Administration Block: After the big monster guy throws you down to the security room area, there is a restroom to the right side of where you stand up. In there (in the dark) is a battery on the floor.

2) Prison Block: After going through the showers, look behind the room where you have to activate a button.

3) Sewer: After escaping the big monster guy for the first time, you will come to an area where someone with a flashlight is looking your way and sings a song. There’s a corpse in this area and next to the corpse is the battery.

4) Male Ward: Before climbing into the burning room, go all the way to the right and look inside the small storage room.

5) Courtyard: Halfway through the chapter you will see a loading screen. When you see it, do not drop down to the area with the big monster guy! Instead, turn around and look for a man standing next to a dumpster. There on the ground is a battery.

6) Courtyard: Behind bloody fountain at end of courtyard chapter. It’s on a bench.

7) Female Ward: Beginning of female ward, in the room that has a wheelchair in the middle. In the dark corner at the end of the room is a corpse with a battery.

8) Female Ward: In the section where you have to collect the three fuses. There’s a battery in one of the shelves of the long hallway.

9) Female Ward: Upstairs, after retrieving the key. There’s a little welcome table and some bloody writing on the wall. The battery is on that table.

10) Female Ward: After losing your camera, in the first room that you enter (the one with all the beds).

11) Return to the Administration Block: Up in the cinema, where a guy slams the door into your face. It’s in the shelf to the right side of the door.

12) Return to the Administration Block: In the long hallway where all of the patients are praying in their rooms. It’s at the very end of the hallway on a table
