Introduction

Welcome to the Outlast 2 Trophy Guide!
If you played Outlast 1 you’ll find that the trophy list is just like that. There are collectibles (documents, recordings) and you must beat the game on insane difficulty – which is a permandeath mode without checkpoints. There is an extra challenge: for the “Messiah” trophy you must beat insane without consuming any camera batteries. Half the game is pitch-black so you won’t be able to see anything. Because of this you must know the game by heart and it will require a lot of practice and patience to beat insane mode. If you die the game restarts from the beginning. For your first playthrough it’s advisable that you play on normal or nightmare difficulty and just find all the collectibles. If you miss a collectible it can be obtained via chapter select at any time. Insane mode is considerably harder than the first game because it is twice as long and has a lot more enemies.

Step 1: Beat the game on normal difficulty, collect all Documents and Recordings

To get to know the game you should start on normal difficulty and find all 105 collectibles (55 documents and 50 recordings). Also pick up enough batteries for “Them That Hath Ears” and heal yourself 10 times with bandages for “Heal the Sick”. You cannot farm these via checkpoint restart so it has to be done over the course of a playthrough. To save some time you can also do the trophies “Thoroughly Baptized” (Spend 10 minutes underwater), “Slip and Slide” (Perform a twelve-meter blood slide ), “Proper Penance” (Crawl for 500 meters) and “Prophet” (Finish the game without hiding in a barrel or closet ). If you don’t do them during your main playthrough then do them via chapter select after the first playthrough.

If you wish you can start on Nightmare difficulty right away. I do not recommend it, but it’s good training for the Insane playthrough. You can start on Nightmare and if it’s too hard switch to normal in the game options (difficulty can be adjusted at any time). What I recommend is that you do an extra run on nightmare to practice for insane mode.

Optional Step (Recommended): Nightmare Difficulty Practice Run

The purpose of this is to practice for insane difficulty. For the “Messiah” trophy you will have to beat insane without using any camera batteries. It is absolutely vital that you know each area by heart and can navigate it in the dark if you have to. Practice each enemy encounter until you are 100% certain that you can do it each and every time. Check out the “Messiah” trophy for a video guide and additional tips.

Repeat difficult sections until you can do them 10 times in a row with 100% success rate. If you die on insane you will have to replay the entire game. Better practice now and memorize the entire game than to take up 30 tries on insane mode. If you need a second or third nightmare run, do it!

Step 2: Insane Difficulty without Batteries

This will be the platinum breaker for most people (but hopefully not you!). You have to beat Insane (highest difficulty) without using any camera batteries. Insane is based on nightmare difficulty but there are no checkpoints whatsoever and if you die the game restarts at the beginning. Enemies run much quicker than they do on normal or hard difficulty. One wrong move and you’re dead. There is absolutely no room for error and you must have memorized the game perfectly before even attempting this. Refer to the trophy “Messiah” for tips and strategies.

UDPDATE: Patch 1.03 changed some sections on Insane Difficulty (enemy placements). It is therefore recommended that you play the unpatched version (only possible with retail disc, if you buy digital it will download latest patch automatically). If you have the newest patch installed do another practice run on Nightmare and adjust the strategies accordingly where sections have been changed.

The “Messiah” trophy / achievement is the hardest in the game. You must beat insane difficulty in one continuous playthrough without reloading the batteries of your camera and without dying. There are no checkpoints on insane mode! If you die the game restarts at the very beginning. Insane is based on Nightmare difficulty. Enemies run much faster than they do on lower difficulties. There is absolutely no room for error.

It’s advisiable that you do a practice run on Nightmare and replay all enemy encounters until you can do them with 100% success rate every time.

INSANE DIFFICULTY TIPS & STRATEGIES:

  • Put Gamma in game options to the maximum, also increase the brightness & contrast of your TV / Monitor to 100%. This way you can see in the dark without using the camera!
  • Practice, practice, practice… replay all difficult sections on nightmare until you get the methods down. One mistake and you’re dead.
  • You are allowed to pause the game (for Ashael Speedrun trophy) but there are no checkpoints, so you cannot leave the game.
  • Know when to consume battery power and when not to. Only use it for tricky enemy encounters. Don’t waste it on navigation, just try around until you find your path through the dark.
  • Quickly turning night vision on and off consumes less energy than keeping it on continuously. Turn it on for just a split second to get a single image of your surroundings. This should be enough to find the right path.
  • Be quick when being chased by enemies! If they catch up to you it’s game over.
  • If possible use a stealth approach to avoid combat. It may take longer but it’s safer.

STRATEGIES FOR TRICKY SPOTS:

  • Marta (Witch with Axe) after power generator: on the left side of the area there’s a hole in a fence. Crawl back and forth through the hole. She’ll run around the other side but can’t reach through the fence. Repeat 2-4 times until the music stops playing, then run to the elevator.
  • Archer 1st encounter: Hide in the tall grass at end of area, crawl through tent and quickly run through woods (beware of enemies along the path).
  • After crucifixion: Get the bandage, heal yourself, then crawl through tree trunk if you’re undeteted. If you get detected, run in a circle around the cross to lose the enemies.
  • Archer 2nd encounter (dark woods with barbed wires): Crouch from tree to tree. Hide behind trees until he goes way. He may stand in front of the exit for 2 minutes but he’ll leave eventually. You can also make some noise by running a little bit and he’ll come to invesntigate (then sneak around the tree behind his back).
  • Archer final encounter: Use the buildings as cover from his arrows. At the start run straight to the house on the hill (right side). Look around the corner and when the archer is standing behind the little wooden shack your make a run for the house on the other side, then to the exit where you can place the rope.
  • Demon in library maze: In the school you’ll have to go through a pitch-black library. It’s a maze of bookshelves. At the end of the maze the demon will start to hunt you. Lure it around the first bookshelf and run to the exit.
  • Demon chase after finding dead Jessica: this is in the school section right after the aforementioned library maze. First you must run to the last toilet cubicle and close the door behind you. Now crawl under the cubicles and wait for the song to end (important!). Once the song has ended (and only then) you exit through the cubicle closest to the door and run upstairs as fast as possible. Don’t close any doors behind you, just run (can use night vision on upper floor to find the path).
  • Encounter with the first 2 heretics: After another school section there’s a room with two heretics. One crawls under some rubble, the other breaks open a door. The 2nd one goes away after a few seconds. The 1st one can “smell” where you are and always comes to you, he has slightly random behavior. What worked best for me was to hide behind the dark pillar where you entered the building. Wait for him to go there, then sneak behind his back while he searches the area. If you’re detected just run upstairs as quickly as possible.
  • Heretic Boss (Val) in flooded area with eletric wires: Hide underwater near the first power switch and let her pass. Turn on first switch. On your way to the 2nd switch do not break the lamp (she might hear you, so just crouch under the lamp to not bump your head into it). Turn on 2nd switch, quickly run back to 1st switch. Hide underwater until she goes to investigate the 2nd switch. Quickly exit the area.
  • After final chase with Heretic Boss: you’ll have to balance over some wooden beams. They break and you fall down into a dark flooded area. Two heretics will be in the water with you and it’s very hard to see anything. There’s a light at the end of the water, quickly run there (run, don’t just walk). If you’re quick enough and don’t get stuck, the heretics won’t notice you.

Finish the game in under 4 hours
Speedrunning the game takes roughly 2 hours 30 minutes. The 4 hour requirement is very forgiving. You could die a lot and still make it. On insane difficulty this trophy is pretty much guaranteed to unlock automatically. Just go for the Messiah trophy and this will come automatically along the way. You can also do a quick speedrun on normal or nightmare difficulty if you wish. With so much time there is a lot of room for mistakes. A very easy speedrun trophy.

Beat the game once to get a better understanding of how the areas are structured and where you must go. On the next playthrough you should earn this trophy with ease.

Below is a video guide of a speedrun on insane difficulty, without using batteries and without hiding in barrels / closets:

The Road to Damascus [Silver]

None of the collectibles are missable! You can get them via chapter select at any time (even after beating the game). Documents are sheets of paper that can be picked up like normal collectibles. Recordings require you to film certain events.
Outlast 2 has a very good collectible tracker. You can track everything in chronological order, chapter by chapter, or by collectible type. Press the touchpad (PS4) to see everything you’ve found. The order in the video guide below is identical with the chronological in-game tracker.

Video Guides chapter by chapter:

Chapter 1: Genesis

Chapter 2: Job

Chapter 3: Lamentations

Chapter 4: Judges

Chapter 5: Leviticus

Chapter 6: Revelations

Text guides by collectible type (if you prefer text or quickly want to look up a collectible you’re missing):

Heal the Sick
Use 10 bandages
For this trophy it’s recommended that you play on normal difficulty because it has the most bandages. On higher difficulties it will spawn fewer bandages and batteries!

When you’re hurt (screen gets bloody) you can hold Triangle-Button to consume a bandage. This will completely refill your health. Repeat this 10 times over the course of a playthrough. On normal difficulty there are a lot more than 10 bandages.

This cannot be farmed via checkpoint restart! If you die it resets your stats to the last checkpoint. It has to be done over the course of a playthrough.

Refer to this guide for the bandage locations: Outlast 2 Bandage Locations Guide.

Thoroughly Baptized
Spend 10 minutes underwater
At some points in the story you have to walk through waist-high water. When you crouch you’ll go underwater (which is great for hiding from enemies). There are also lots of barrels filled with water, but entering a barrel will void the “Prophet” trophy so it’s not the preferred method.

A good location is in Chapter 3: Lamentations, Subchapter: The Lake.

There’s a lake at the start of the subchapter. Stand in the lake and press Circle-Button to go underwater. Stay close to the beach so the demon doesn’t grab you underwater (don’t swim out in the lake). You cannot stay underwater for 10 minutes at once. After half a minute you need to stand up to get some air. If you stay underwater for too long you’ll suffocate. Your character will make a sound when he’s almost out of air and the screen starts flashing red.

Them That Hath Ears
Use the microphone for 20 minutes
You can use the camera’s microphone by pressing D-Pad Left. You also get a tutorial for it very early in the game, after escaping Marta (witch with the axe). Using the microphone consumes battery power. So you’ll have to find plenty of batteries and keep the microphone going for a total of 20 minutes over the course of a playthrough. There are lots of batteries on normal difficulty (higher difficulties have fewer of them).

This cannot be farmed via checkpoint restart! If you die it resets your stats to the last checkpoint. It has to be done over the course of a playthrough.

Refer to this guide for the battery locations: Outlast 2 Battery Locations Guide.

Slip and Slide
Perform a twelve-meter blood slide

Chapter: Lamentations, Subchapter: Raining Blood

This can only be done in the school during the “Raining Blood” Subchapter. At one point the fire sprinklers will go off, but instead of water they are sprinkling blood everywhere. Run and slide down the blood-smeared hallway to earn this trophy. You need to gain enough speed before sliding. Do not equip your camera, it will slow you down too much. This is the only opportunity for a 12 meter slide. You can replay this section via chapter select at any time (can be selected from the title screen).

Proper Penance
Crawl for 500 meters
Self-explanatory. Go to a quiet spot and crawl for 500 meters.

Hey PP! Are there any leap of faith style jumps in Outlast 2? There where a few in Outlast 1 that killed me because i suck.

Yup, but they aren’t so bad. I died at a jump once about halfway through the game.
Out the top of my head I recall only 3 jumps with the potential to die. There are a few other parts where you must balance over wooden planks. If you fall down you could possibly die (never had this happen so I dunno for sure).

You can get it through chapter select at any time, so I wouldn’t necessarily rate it as being missable.

using 1 bandage and dying and using the same bandage again will still only count as using 1 bandage………

It cannot be farmed via checkpoint restart. Has to be over the course of a playthrough.

In order to crawl exactly 500 meters for the Proper Penance trophy, set the timer for approximately 10 minutes.

If the trophy doesn’t pop up when the timer reaches 0, then simply keep on crawling for a few more seconds or minutes.

The trophy will eventually pop up.

Hey, you can get the Trophy “Them That Hath Ears” easily in the last chapter, after Knoth’s suicide, because the battery on camera never ends.
