In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there’s a secret way to upgrade your armor. The game just never tells you about it. You can upgrade armor at Great Fairies, which are found by completing certain Side Adventures.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to upgrade armor in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom:
- Go to Lucky Clover Gazette in Hebra region and talk to the owner to start Side Adventure “Potential Princess Sightings!”. Then talk to Pen (white bird guy) outside. This makes him spawn in front of Stables throughout the map which spawns new Side Adventures.
- Talk to Pen at Woodland Stable in Central Hyrule region. He will give you Side Adventure “Serenade to a Great Fairy”. Do this quest to unlock the first Great Fairy (refer to Serenade to a Great Fairy Walkthrough).
- After this adventure you can talk to the Great Fairy north-west of Woodland Stable, she will upgrade armor pieces that are part of an armor set in exchange for certain materials. The required materials are different for each armor and are dropped by enemies. It will also mark the remaining Great Fairies (4 total) on your world map – see Great Fairy Locations. You unlock them by doing the Side Adventures from the musicians at the stable near each fairy.
Now you can talk to the Great Fairy to trade materials for armor upgrades. Note that certain armor found in chests cannot be upgraded. Armor that’s part of a set (usually the ones bought from merchants or as quest rewards) are upgradable. The first upgrade increases the defense from 3 to 5. You can upgrade armor a second time to get a bonus effect.
To unlock the other Great Fairies you need to do their Side Adventures. They are started by talking to the musicians, Violynne and Mastro, at the stable near each Fairy.
