In order to catch large and rare fish in Final Fantasy XV you will need a better Fishing Rod & Reel. This will come in handy when you want to max out the fishing skill to level 10.
They can be bought from certain fishing shops but are quite expensive.

There is a shop near the fishing spot in Vesperpool. It sells the parts for 12,000 Gil and 9600 Gil.
If you want the very best the game has to offer you can win a Reel from the Tomostro minigame in Altissia (where you bet money on monster fights). The best Rod is obtained from doing all of Navyt’s side quests.
