To increase your filter level you must buy medical wing upgrades in the Base of Operations. There are 3 wing upgrades that increase your filter level: Virus Lab (500 Supplies), Hazmat Unit (400 Supplies), Pharmacy (200 Supplies).
They all have the perk called “Protective Measures”. Each upgrade increases your filter level by 1 point. Level 4 is the maximum (you start out at level 1).
To see your current filter level open the inventory and go to the “Character” tab. Now scroll down to Exploration and it will show your virus filter level.
When you scroll over a contaminated area on your map it will show you the contamination level. These areas have some of the best loot in the game so you should definitely check them out. There are some big boxes in them that contain powerful items.
