The purpose of VR Masters in Naruto to Boruto Shinobi Striker is to learn new moves from them. For every match you play you will gain XP with your selected VR Master (you play as your master in combat, you can play whoever you like). The Master can be set in the Ninjutsu Library at the market square.
By leveling up your VR Master you learn their moves and can then use them for your own custom character. This allows you to bundle the best moves together that suit your playstyle.
There are a total of 20 VR Masters in the base game (excluding DLC). Below we’ll go through how to unlock all of them. Do note that all of these are playable characters, too!
VR Masters Unlock List
The list below is in the same order as the Ninjutsu Library. You need to play VR missions to unlock new masters. If you need help with that, see How to Unlock VR Missions Guide.
- Naruto Uzumaki: Available from the beginning, default character.
- Sasuke Uchiha: Available from the beginning, default character.
- Sakura Haruno: Available from the beginning, default character.
- Sai: Reach Mastery Level 2 with Yamato (select Yamato as your master in Nijutsu Library, play Quick Matches to get him to Level 2, return to Ninjutsu Library to unlock Sai)
- Kakashi Hatake: Complete the first D-Rank VR Mission “Kakashi’s Special Mission” (after tutorial missions).
- Yamato: Available from the beginning, default character.
- Rock Lee: Complete Rock Lee’s VR Mission “Free Practice of Passionate Youth”.
- Shikamaru Nara: Complete Shikamaru Nara’s VR Mission “A Tense Pursuit”.
- Choji Akimichi: Reach Mastery Level 2 with Shikamaru Nara (select Shikamaru as your master in Nijutsu Library, play Quick Matches to get him to Level 2, return to Ninjutsu Library to unlock Choji)
- Hinata Hyuga: Complete Hinata’s VR Mission “Byakugan”.
- Gaara: Complete Gaara’s VR Mission “Gamabunta in Peril!”.
- Deidara: Complete Choji Akimichi’s VR Mission “Welcome to My Art Exhibit!”.
- Kisame Hoshigaki: Complete Tenten’s VR Mission “The Inescapable Water Prison”.
- Pain: Reach Mastery Level 2 with Konan (select Konan as your master in Nijutsu Library, play Quick Matches to get him to Level 2, return to Ninjutsu Library to unlock Pain)
- Itachi Uchiha: Reach Mastery Level 2 with Sasuke Uchiha (select Sasuke as your master in Nijutsu Library, play Quick Matches to get him to Level 2, return to Ninjutsu Library to unlock Itachi)
- Kabuto Yakushi: Complete Sai’s VR Mission “Hidden Leaf Forest Night Terrors”.
- Konan: Complete Mitsuki’s VR Mission “Storming the Akatsuki Fortress”.
- Boruto Uzumaki: Reach Mastery Level 2 with Naruto Uzumaki (select Naruto as your master in Nijutsu Library, play Quick Matches to get him to Level 2, return to Ninjutsu Library to unlock Boruto)
- Sarada Uchiha: Reach Mastery Level 2 with Sakura Haruno (select Sakura as your master in Nijutsu Library, play Quick Matches to get her to Level 2, return to Ninjutsu Library to unlock Sarada)
- Mitsuki: Complete Boruto’s VR Mission “Destruction of the Leaf”.

Not true, pain is given to you immediately when you preordered. He is still available in the game to get for anyone. It just unlocked him immediately for those who preordered.

Not true. If you get Konan and level her up to level 2 it says new master unlock and get Pain as a usable master to learn from.

Kakashi wasn’t unlocked for me by default and I still didn’t unlock him. I unlocked Sarada, Shikamaru Gaara Lee Mitsuki so far.

Update: He’s from the very first VR Mission D-Rank “Kakashi’s Special Mission”. There was no proper character unlock screen after the mission which is why I missed it (with all the other masters you actually see an image of them when they unlock). And the first time I really looked he was already there. So very early unlock from first mission after tutorial.

I started a new game to see if that would help me get Kakashi. I did the tutorial. I did the very first D ranked mission, still no Kakashi. I wanted to like this game, but between missing a character, the various glitches, and now me having to start from scratch all I can say is that this game was not fit for release.

Remember when naruto did sexy jutsu? Well he was wearing the standard naruto outfit and so it should be able to be worn…and plus it’s a naruto game, i’m Quite positive you’d be able to wear his outfit lol

As soon as you attain the first training level Mikado is given as a vr master but you must purchase and set him as your vr master first. My play style is 2 ways a mix of Itachi sasuke and obito, and a mix of boruto naruto amd minato so I had troubke understanding at first too.
