Phantom Blade Zero contains 32 Side Tales and 9 Collectible Tales. The 5 side tales related to collecting Memory Flowers are covered as part of the Flower locations in the Phantom Blade Zero Collectible Guide.
Most of these tales will reward you with some sort of other collectible in the game. The Side Tales themselves have several objectives throughout the game’s 8 regions. The Collectible Tales will have you mostly collecting specific items, usually within the same region. There are quite a few missable Side Tales, which are marked as red MISSABLE below. The tales will be listed in chronological order of when they can be accepted.
Triple Threat
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Accepted when entering the trial at The Lady’s Rift Bell.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
You’ll need to defeat the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet inside the trial, which will reward you with the Three-Headed Doll. It’s recommended to come back to this around the time you finish your first visit to Pangzhen.
Objective Location: Crimson Forest
After entering Mirage Estate and having parts of the region be covered in snow and ice, go to the Threadbound Great Tree Bell and fight the boss again. Make sure you equip the Blazing Edge (Soul Tempered Sanguine Reach), and defeat them with it so you get the full reward.
Reward: Freezing Chaos (Weapon) and Chaos Iron Fragment II (Tempering Material Piece)
Flesh Lily – MISSABLE
If you didn’t collect the Flesh Lily by the time you meet with Yu’er’s father, it will fail.
Required for 
The Healer’s Legacy.
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Accepted from Yu’er by asking her how to save her father.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
The Flesh Lily is located in the arena where you fight Hua, Deathly Betrothed. After picking it up, go back to the Outpost and give it to Yu’er.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
After defeating Blaze, Shadow Warden Captain, pick up the Crimson Flesh Lily. Afterwards, progress through the area until you defeat Chang Hong, The Thunder Spear, then head into Yu’er’s home directly ahead. Talk to the old man and you’ll use the normal Flesh Lily on him to revive him.
Reward: Blessed Jade Pendant (Accessory)
Four Fierce Axes – MISSABLE
If you didn’t progress Festering Secret enough to be able to get the 5th book before defeating the boss at the end of the Crimson Forest region, you won’t be able to obtain it anymore.
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Accepted after picking up one of the Four Fierce Axes books. The first one you come across is directly next to the Broken Puppet Valley Bell.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
You’ll need to collect all 7 books related to the Four Fierce Axes.
- By the tree by the Broken Puppet Valley Bell.
- Inside the house by the Broken Puppet Valley Bell.
- Near the Outpost Courtyard Bell, inside one of the buildings.
- On a table near the Axe Master’s Holding Cell Bell.
- Giving the Captains Orders (Objective for Festering Secret) to the NPC near the Long Pillar Overlook Bell
- On a table near the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Base Bell.
- From The Lady’s Cave Bell, follow the path until you exit the cave and use the Hunter’s Chain Sickle to grab up the branch.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
After collecting all 7 books, go to the Pavilion of Knowledge Crossroads and enter the giant building to the right. Climb to the top floor and talk to the Child of Insight at the top to give him the books.
Reward: Blood Oath Dagger (Tempering Material)
Purge the Sect – MISSABLE
After defeating the main boss of the Crimson Forest region, this tale will fail if not completed.
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Accepted from the Brooding Old Archer inside the Outpost.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Going to the Ruthless Archer Camp and defeat all the archer enemies to get the Broken-String Bow, then return to the Brooding Old Archer.
Reward: Feather Bow (Phantom Edge)
Festering Secret – MISSABLE
After defeating the main boss of the Crimson Forest region, this tale will fail if not completed.
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Automatically accepted after done talking with Forge.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
After obtaining the Dread Axe, go to the Outpost and destroy the barricade. Defeat all the enemies in the area then talk to the Captain. Afterwards, talk to the man near the Long Pillar Overlook, then go back to the Outpost and speak with the Captain again.
Reward: Nothing
Apprentice Healer – MISSABLE
Once you defeat Jing Ye, The Outlaw in the Crimson Forest region, this tale will fail if you haven’t completed it already
Required for The Healer’s Legacy.
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Accepted from Yu’er in the Outpost after defeating Peng Meng.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
You’ll need to collect the 3 herbs spread across the region.
- Blood-Stopper Vine – Near the Axemaster’s Holding Cell Bell.
- Congealeaf – Near the door you unlock with the Rusted Loong Key.
- Blemish Goldweed – Near the Weeping Creek Valley Long Pillar.
After collecting all 3, return to Yu’er.
Reward: Medicine Case (Accessory)
A Severed Mindseal – MISSABLE
It’s unknown exactly where the fail trigger is, so it’s best to do all the objectives as soon as you get the opportunity.
Required for Spectral Blade.
Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Accepted from the Shadow Warden by the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Summit Bell.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley.
Defeat the enemy down the giant ladder near the Valley Sha-Chi Summit Tower Bell to get the Sha-Chi Tower Furnace Inspection Crank. Return to the Valley Sha-Chi Tower 1st Floor Bell and use the Sha-Chi Tower Furnace Inspection Crank on the furnace to get the Primal Stone, and take it back to the Shadow Warden.
Objective Location: Meigu Lake.
Talk to the Shadow Warden by the Pangzhen Sha-Chi Tower Summit and he’ll ask you to grab another Primal Stone for him. Take the boat around the Sha-Chi Tower to get underneath it and follow the path until you reach the end where you can find the Primal Stone in the furnace, then return it to the Shadow Warden.
Objective Location: Crimson Forest
After entering Mirage Estate, the east side of the Crimson Forest region will be covered in snow and ice. From the Burial Grounds Bell, you can find the new Sha-Chi Tower by going directly ahead and up the hill on the right, then following that path. Once you talk to him at the top of the tower, you can continue through the area and you’ll find the last Primal Stone after going down the elevator, then you can return to him.
Reward: Nothing right away, but he’ll give you the Statue of the Loyal Hero (Tempering Material) in Mount Soulrend.
Honor Among Thieves – MISSABLE
After defeating the main boss of the Crimson Forest region, this tale will fail if not completed.
Location: Crimson Forest
Accepted by defeating the Nimble Thief near the Outlaw Trap Bell.
Objective Location: Crimson Forest
Talk to the Gentle Thief near the Thieves’ Camp Bell and answer his 3 questions correctly. If you get a question wrong, you can just reattempt it.

Reward: Silent Wrap (Accessory)
Secrets of the Baishan Sect – MISSABLE
Will become missable if you don’t accept the tale before defeating the main boss of the Crimson Forest. Will also fail if you defeat the main boss of the Mandate Encampment in the Training Grounds, before defeating Wu Lengshuang, The Soft Sword.
Required for The Last of Baishan.
Location: Crimson Forest
Accepted by talking to Lanlan on the giant bridge near the Thieves’ Camp Bell.
Objective Location: Crimson Forest
From the Cliffside Lodge Bell, pick up the Crimson Forest Cellar Crank and use it to unlock the cellar. Go down and drop onto the plank between the 2 platforms and pick up the Crimson Forest Secret Chamber Crank, then drop down all the way down and use it to unlock the door and talk to the girl inside.
Objective Location: Mandate Encampment.
From The Confinement Bell, defeat Wu Lengshuang, The Soft Sword and then continue up the bath and interact with the body in the flowers. From here, you can complete the area like normal and after defeating Yubi, No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet, you’ll get a unique cutscene.
Reward: Broken Vessel (Tempering Material)
A Healer’s Mercy – MISSABLE
After defeating the main boss of the Crimson Forest region, this tale will fail if not completed.
Required for The Healer’s Legacy.
Location: Crimson Forest
Accepted from Yu’er near the Thieves’ Camp bell.
Objective Location: Crimson Forest
You’ll need to heal all 4 of the thieves located around the area.
- In the small cave near the Outlaw Trap Bell.
- In the larger cave near the Outlaw Trap Bell.
- Down the giant ladder near the Cliffside Lodge Bell.
- On the other side of the locked door in the Thieves’ Camp. Requires the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon Key, which can be found under the lodge cellar near the Cliffside Lodge Bell.
After saving all 4, return to Yu’er.

The Wily Hare’s Three Dens
Location: Crimson Forest
Accepted from Quick Hand Zhang at his hideout after rescuing him from his cage near the Trail of Cages.
Objective Location: Multiple Regions
You’ll need to find all 5 of the Quick Hand Zhang hideouts.
- Crimson Forest – This one is unlocked by default as this is where you find it.
- Village of Lu – From the Covered Bridge Bell, follow the path through the buildings until you reach a small open area with a barricade. Drop into the river on the right and follow the cave to the end to find his hideout.
- Pangzhen – From the Backstreets Archway Bell, go through the arena where you fought Wu Xuan, The Fallen General and go through the building on the right. Follow the path into another building and drop into the cave to find his hideout.
- Meigu Lake – From the Meigu Village West Dock Bell, follow the island to the end across the beams and he’s directly ahead.
- Mirage Estate (Pangzhen) – From the Shaded Bamboo Path Bell, follow the path until you reach an open courtyard, then go up the stairs on the left.

Quick Hand’s Request
Required for Lost and Found.
Location: Crimson Forest
Accepted from Quick Hand Zhang at his hideout after rescuing him from his cage near the Trail of Cages.

You’ll need to find all 3 of the hidden treasures in the Crimson Forest Region.
- Sect Leader’s Snuff Bottle – Inside the large cave near the Outlaw Trap Bell. Requires the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank, which can be found in the small cave near the Outlaw Trap Bell.
- Bloodstained Seal – Inside the cave after the long wooden platform past the Thieves’ Camp Bell.
- Ancient Crossbow – Inside the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon. Requires the Thieves’ Camp Dungeon Key, which can be found under the lodge cellar near the Cliffside Lodge Bell.
After finding all 3, return to Quick Hand Zhang in the Crimson Forest.
Objective Location: Village of Lu
You’ll need to find all 3 of the hidden treasures in the Village of Lu Region.
- Wedding Candles – Inside a chest in one of the buildings in the alleyway near the Well of the Three Puppets Bell.
- Unveiled Statue – In a chest by all the statues near The Lady Grounds Bell.
- White Jade Twins – Inside a cave near the ladder shortcut you can open up back to the Temples of Blue Fireflies Bell from the Survivors’ Outpost Bell.
After finding all 3, return to Quick Hand Zhang in the Village of Lu.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
You’ll need to find all 4 of the hidden treasures around the Pangzhen Region.
- Tiger Paperweight – Inside the Tianxiang Pavilion near the Huang Manor Crossroads Bell. You’ll need the Tianxiang Pavilion Key to enter, which can be found during The Star Performer Tale.
- Ink Stick – From the Backstreet Archway Bell, go through the arena where you fought Wu Xuan, The Fallen General and enter the building ahead on the left. It’s on the top floor.
- Carved-Edge Inkstone – From the Narrow Alley Residence 2nd Floor Bell, take the zipline down to the next area and enter the building ahead.
- Jade Brush Rest – From the Marketplace Bell, clear the fire with You Loong’s Deluge, then climb onto the rooftops to the right and follow them to the end.
Objective Location: Meigu Lake
You’ll need to find all 3 of the hidden treasures in the Meigu Lake Region.
- Blue Blossom Compass – From the Blackwater Crew Dock Bell, go through the arena where you fought You Loong and go down the zipline to the docks and you’ll see it on a small island.
- Blight Astrolabe – From the second Phantom Illusionist Ruins Bell, go across the the coffins and you’ll see it across the beams.
- Sundial of Impermanence – From the seventh Phantom Illusionist Ruins Bell, continue forward until and zipline across the boat and it’ll be upstairs.
Objective Location: Mirage Estate (Pangzhen)
You’ll need to find all 3 of the hidden treasures in the Mirage Estate (Pangzhen) Region.
- General’s Bronze Mirror – From the Training Grounds Bell, go into the open area ahead and enter the building on the left.
- Gold-and-Silver Sachet – From the Opera House Bell, enter the Opera House and it’ll be on the left.
- Golden Cloud-Moon Hairpin – From the Perfect Vessel Estate Bell, directly behind the statue.

Heart of the Banyan
Required for

Automatically accepted from the Illusion of Inanis after meeting her.
Objective Location: Multiple Regions
You’ll need to find and complete all 5 Banyan Tree challenges.
- Crimson Forest – From the Parting Mists Bell, drop down and it’ll be to the right. You’ll have a rematch with Jing Ye, The Outlaw.
- Pangzhen – From the Lion Dance Hall Bell, go to the arena where you fought You Loong, Leader of the Blackwater Crew and continue past his arena. You’ll have a rematch with Master Bi Yuan of the Tianxuan Sect.
- Mandate Encampment – From the Sunset path Bell, go straight ahead and grapple up the cliff on the right, and it’ll be on the plateau. You’ll have a rematch with Iron Fiend, Young Mistress’s Guardian and Stone Hand, Iron Fever.
- Meigu Lake – From the Village of Lu Shallow Docks Bell, drive to the island in the east and it’ll be on that island. You’ll have a rematch with Cavalrybane, Elite Shadow Warden and Soulclaimer, Elite Shadow Warden
- Mountain of Imprisonment – From the Shrine Outer Gate Bell, unlock the door ahead and it’ll be across the wooden bridge. You’ll have a rematch with Iron Butcher, The Frenzied Brute and Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute.
Reward: Nothing, but each tree gives you a Heart of the Banyan when completed.
The Journey Home – MISSABLE
It’s unknown exactly where the fail trigger is, so it’s best to do all the objectives as soon as you get the opportunity.

After opening the locked door by the Puppet Testing Grounds Bell, return to Old Man Gen and agree to his request.

From the Pong of Fading Song Bell, turn around and follow the path going to the right and burn the branches to get access towards the area. Continue following the area and you’ll eventually find Old Man Gen’s House towards the end. Open the door and interact with the corpse inside, then return to Old Man Gen in the Village of Lu.
Reward: Nothing right away, but he’ll give you the War Wagon (Phantom Edge) in Meigu Lake.
Leave None Alive – MISSABLE
Location: Village of Lu
Automatically accepted.
Objective Location: Weeping Creek Valley and Crimson Forest
You’ll have 2 objectives to do here.
- Go to the Outpost Bell in Weeping Creek Valley and defeat the enemies there to get the Prayer Beads.
- Go to the Thieves’ Camp Bell in the Crimson Forest and defeat the enemies there as well to get the Thief’s Manual.
Objective Location: Village of Lu
After checking both camps, you’ll have to give the items you obtained to certain NPCs.
- Talk to the Wounded Thief near the Smuggler’s Tunnel Entrance Bell and give him the Thief’s Manual. Make sure to do this BEFORE progressing through the Smuggler’s Tunnel, or else the NPC will die.
- Talk to The Stately Monk near the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell and give him the Prayer Beads. When talking to him, make sure you DO NOT choose the “believe” option or else he’ll turn to stone and no longer be able to talk to him.
Reward: Arrowward (Accessory) and Agarwood Prayer Beads (Accessory)
Young Master Lan – MISSABLE

- On a post on the bridge past the thread barrier by the Covered Bridge Bell.
- Automatically given by interacting with The Lady Grounds Bell.
- On a post on the bridge next to the Beneath the Well Bell.
Reward: Nothing right away, but lets you get the Fiend Saws (Weapon) and Fist Fragment: Core (Tempering Material Piece) from the Village of Lu Main Boss.
A Puppet’s Wooden Heart

Accepted from the Songstress Puppet by the Temple of Blue Fireflies Bell.
Objective Location: Village of Lu
Go to the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell and talk to the man in the purple robe to give him the letter. Afterwards, go to the Engine Giant Remains Bell and go into the fields. You’ll find Pei’s corpse near the campfire. Finally, go back to see the Songstress Puppet by the Temple of Blue Fireflies Bell.
Reward: A Puppet’s Wooden Heart (Accessory)

Accepted from the NPC in the house near the Survivors’ Courtyard Bell.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
From the Narrow Alley Residence 2nd Floor Bell, drop down and take the zipline further. Go up the small set of stone stairs ahead and through the building. You’ll see the corpse of Dahuang laying on the ground.

Cui
Location: Village of Lu
Accepted from Cui by the Puppet Testing Grounds Bell.
Objective Location: Mountain of Imprisonment
From the Iron Butcher’s Camp Bell, go up the stairs and to the scaffolding and open the cage. Afterwards, defeat Bi Feng, Giant Saber Commander, then pick up the Rootless Dew near his arena. Afterwards, open the mountain gate and talk to Lu Sanquian.
From the Shrine Outer Gate Bell, drop down until you find the camp with all the cages and free Lu Sanquian from his cage and give him the Rootless Dew. Finally, talk to him again once you find him near The Lady’s Shrine Bell.
Objective Location: Mount Soulrend
From The Last Mandate Encampment Bell, climb up and go across the bridge and talk to the man there.
Reward: Nothing right away, but will give you the Baishan Headband (Tempering Material) after The Crusher and The Saw boss fight,
The Sword and the Way
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted from Daoist Bi Di near the Myst’s Tavern Bell.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
From the Green Serpent House Bell, grapple onto the roof to the right and climb up the ladder. Follow the path ahead to the blacksmiths courtyard and interact with the furnace to find the Bronze Essence. Afterwards, Soul Temper the Tianxuan Bronze Sword and return to Daoist Bi Di.
Reward: Kuye Temple Sutra (Tempering Material)
The Undying Heroic Spirit
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted from the Purple-Robed “Wolf” Leader near the Myst’s Tavern Bell.
Objective Location: Mandate Encampment
Defeat the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation by the Three Towers Bell, then return to the Purple-Robed “Wolf” Leader in Pangzhen.
Objective Location: Multiple Regions
From here, you’ll need to defeat 4 specific enemies that drop Memory Flowers and collect them.
- From the Pangzhen Slums in Pangzhen, go down the hill and defeat the friendly NPC after he turns into an enemy.
- From the Three Towers Bell in the Mandate Encampment, drop down on the left and hop over the fence. Go up the ramp on the right and follow the path to the friendly NPC that turns into an enemy, then defeat him.
- From the Path of the Baishan’s Fall Bell in the Mandate Encampment, follow the path ahead. After running across the wall defeat the friendly NPC that turns into an enemy.
- From the Behind the Encampment Waterfall in the Mandate Encampment, go forward past the building on left and you’ll come across a large building ahead. Go behind the building and defeat the friendly NPC that turns into an enemy.
Reward: Hero’s Courage (Tempering Material)
The Star Performer
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted from the Leading Opera Actress near the Myst’s Tavern Bell.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
From the Myst’s Tavern bell, backtrack to where you fought Cavalrybane, Elite Shadow Warden and enter the alleyway on the right. Interact with the incense and use the Leading Actress’s Rogue, then defeat the enemies to get the Tianxiang Pavilion Key. Afterwards, enter the Tianxiang Pavilion nearby. Go to the top floor and interact with the dancer and she’ll give you the Tattered Dance Fan. You can then return to the Leading Opera Actress.
Reward: Dance Fan (Accessory)
The Cube
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted from the Fisherman near the Myst’s Tavern Bell.
Objective Location: Meigu Lake
You’ll need to find both of the cube fragments in the region.
- From the Meigu Village East Dock Bell, go up the stairs on the left then climb up the ladder, then drop down into a small room.
- From the Blackwater Crew Deck Bell, follow the coast of the island to the right and defeat the enemy by the shrine.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
After collecting both, talk to the Fisherman by Myst’s Tavern Bell, then go talk to Myst.
Reward: Remnant Spark Cube (Accessory)
A Brother Once More
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted once collecting the Memory Flower in the Huang Manor near the Huang Manor Crossroads Bell. To get the key to the Huang Manor, talk to the Shopkeeper Niu near the Myst’s Tavern Bell.
Objective Location: Meigu Lake
From the Meigu Songhouse Dock Bell, get in the boat and drive across the lake to the south-east, then dock on the coast. Defeat Grief-Stricken Jin, then pick up the Memory Flower on the dock.
Reward: Rogue Box (Accessory)
Kin Against Kin
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted once collecting the Memory Flower along the stone bridge near the Lion Dance Hall Bell.
Objective Location: Meigu Lake
From the Meigu Village East Dock Bell, walk ahead to the crossroads then go to the left. Turn left again and you’ll see a building ahead. Pick up the Memory Flower in there.
Reward: Longevity Tonic (Medicine)
A Mother’s Heart
Location: Pangzhen
Accepted once collecting the Memory Flower along the path from the Black Hill Pavilion.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
You’ll first need to pick up the Backstreet Cellar Crank from the chest right before the Memory Flower where you accepted the tale from. Afterwards, from the Old Man Gen’s House Bell, turn around and use it to open the locked cellar. Follow the path through the cellar and defeat the enemy at the top of the ladder.
Reward: Merciful Dew (Medicine)
Xue, Admirer of Heroes
Location: Mandate Encampment
Accepted after defeating Corpse-Eating Xue near the Mass Grave Bell.
Objective Location: Mandate Encampment
You’ll need to collect the 3 items around the region.
- From the Mass Grave Bell, go to where you fought Corpse-Eating Xue and up on the hill on the right. It’s at the end of the cave.
- From the Tower Rear Exit Bell, follow the river and it’ll be at the end.
- Directly beside the Road to the Training Grounds Bell.
Objective Location: Pangzhen
After collecting all 3 items, go to the Pavilion of Knowledge Crossroads and enter the giant building to the right. Climb to the top floor and talk to the Child of Insight at the top to give him the books.

Daughter of the Dark Sect – MISSABLE
If you defeat Red, The Mysterious Woman on your first encounter with her, you’ll fail the tale.
Location: Mandate Encampment
Accepted from the dying NPC by the Dovecote Bell.
Objective Location: Mandate Encampment
From the Dovecote Bell, enter the building and make your way to the rooftop and you’ll encounter Red, The Mysterious Swordswoman. DO NOT defeat her, instead swing across the chain and she’ll run away. Once you fight Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation, she’ll join the fight half way through the second phase and after defeating them both, pick up the Memory Flower she drops.

Don’t Forget Me

From the Commander’s Platform Bell, climb up the tower and drop into the building to get the Detached Cage Lever. Once obtained, go to the Shrine Outer Gate Bell and drop down until you reach the camp with the cages, and use the Detached Cage Lever to lower the cage and get Moji’s Bloodstained Sword. Afterwards, return to Lin Yi.

From the Shrine Outer Gate Bell, drop down until you reach the caves and go down the pathway that leads to the outside facing cliff face and you’ll find his book there. Afterwards, return to him and when talking to him, MAKE SURE you pick the dialogue option “This won’t absolve you of your sins” and you’ll end up fighting him. Choosing the other option won’t unlock the next tale in the sequence.

From the Green Serpent House Bell, turn around across the stone bridge and go unlock the door leading to the Backstreets. In this area, pick up the 2 Memory Flowers and interact with the stone at the base of the tree outside to dig up the grave.

After talking to her, equip only the Fiend Saws weapon and Iron Gauntlets phantom edge, then challenge her to a sparring match where you’ll fight both the Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend.
