Valor Mortis contains 6 Maximum Level Upgrade Materials. Obtaining at least 1 of each is required to fully upgrade a Melee Weapon, Firearm, and Transmutation for the following trophies & achievements:
- Gun of Glory
– Upgrade a single Firearm to maximum - Transmutation Artifex – Upgrade a single Transmutation to maximum
- Bladesmith – Upgrade a single Melee Weapon to maximum
– Upgrade a single Firearm to maximumYou must also upgrade specifically the Shield Transmutation to level 5 for the 
Abyssal Eviction trophy/achievement. Because of this you should make sure you use at least one of the max level Transmutation materials on Shield.
Upgrade Materials in Valor Mortis cannot be farmed as they do not drop from enemies. They are always found in the environment by being picked up or from certain chests. There is enough of each material to upgrade all Melee Weapons to level 10, all Firearms to level 9, and all Transmutations to level 4, but it seems there is only 1 max level Firearm material and 2 max level Transmutation materials so you cannot fully upgrade all Firearms and Transmutations.

Lantern: The Outskirts > Lighthouse
In the area where you fight Experiment 83, this is in the side lab area where there are also two notes, in a chest.
Material #2
Lantern: Fortress > Chapel
Progress into the underground area until you reach a sewer room with a door on the left side after a pole jump. Go into that area, then at the bottom of the flight of stairs turn right. You will be locked in this room with a bunch of enemies, and at the back is an explosive chest with this material.

Lantern: Fortress > Courtyard
To the right of the table in the chest.
Masterwork Firearm Parts

Lantern: University > Main Hall
Go to the area where you jumped across the chandelier to reach the Shield Transmutation pickup, and go the opposite direction through the poison hallway. Continue down the next elevator, then into the lower level library. Continue out the back of the library area into the lecture hall with the hanging bodies. At the back under the balcony is a chest with this inside.

Lantern: Fortress > Traverse
After lighting both of the signal fires to open the gates near the Traverse Lantern, go through the gate and this is in a chest immediately to the left.
