This guide shows all Side Quests in Black Myth: Wukong. The quests aren’t marked in any way in-game. Unless you stumble across them you wouldn’t know they exist. They are all required for trophies & achievements because they lead to secret bosses. Those bosses in turn are needed to obtain 100% Journal Completion, and they drop various pieces of equipment that’s also trophy-related.
Most of the side quests require interacting with an NPC. They don’t give you objectives with waypoints, instead you have to infer from the dialogue what the quest giver wants.
You can fast travel between chapters at any time from Keeper’s Shrines. There’s still free-roam after the story. After the endboss you are put back in the Title Screen, here choose to Continue, it will spawn you before the final boss. You can still revisit all places from this point. Just don’t “Enter a New Cycle” in the Title Screen as this starts New Game+ and overwrites your save with no way back.
Side Quests that take place over all Chapters
Horse NPC Questline [MISSABLE]
MISSABLE – Must exhaust all dialogue with the Horse NPC in every chapter, before advancing to the next chapter!
The Horse NPC can be found in every Chapter from Chapter 1 – 5. You have to find him in every chapter, talk to him, and exhaust all dialogue. When you start a new chapter he disappears from the previous chapter. To get the trophy “Urge Unfulfilled” you have to talk to him in every chapter, thus making this highly missable.
Horse NPC Locations:
- Chapter 1 > Bamboo Grove > Back Hills: From this shrine go down the stairs and then take the path left to find a cave entrance. Inside you find the horse NPC sitting on the side of the cave. Exhaust all dialogues with him. (A meditation spot is also here in the middle of the cave)
- Chapter 2 > Sandgate Village > Village Entrance: From this shrine go forward and then to the right to enter the village area. Keep going forward through the village (past rat archers on the cliffs), then take the road left to get to a meadow where the Earth Wolf boss awaits. This is the opposite side of the gate you saw from Village Entrance shrine. After defeating the Earth Wolf, check the pagoda on the side to find the horse NPC. He’s tied-up there. Exhaust all dialogue.
- Chapter 3 > New Thunderclap Temple > Temple Entrance: From this shrine go forward, through a temple building, then up the stairs in front of you. Then go down the stairs on the left side and straight ahead into the next building. Inside this building go up the stairs to reach the upper balcony. From here you can go over a wooden bridge on the side of the balcony, the horse NPC stands at the end of it. Exhaust all dialogue.
- Chapter 4 > Webbed Hollow > Middle Hollow / Bonevault: On your way to the next shrine called “Cliff of Oblivion” you will automatically run into the horse NPC again. You can’t miss him here, he’s on the main story path and will talk to you automatically. He pops out of a spider cocoon.
- Chapter 5 > Furnace Valley > Valley Entrance: Go down the path and enter the lava lake on the right side, in the corner of the lava lake interact with the Element Cart to pull a string from it. The Horse NPC is stuck inside the cart. Exhaust all dialogue until he repeats the same line.
After you spoke to him in every spot you must do the following:
- First, you must beat Chapter 5.
- After reaching Chapter 6, fast travel back to Chapter 5 > Furnace Valley > Valley Entrance: Go back to where you talked to the NPC stuck in the cart in Chapter 5. From this shrine walk down the path, then enter the lava pool on the right. Go to the corner of the lava to find a stuck Element Cart surrounded by a bunch of enemies. Interact with the cart to pull a string. After pulling out the string you unlock this trophy. You can’t pull the string during Chapter 5. You have to beat Chapter 5 first, then come back here. Doing so will unlock this trophy as well as the “Dark Thunder” spell.
Old Man Questline [MISSABLE]
MISSABLE – The Old Man disappears from some of his locations as you advance the story. Talk to him in every chapter before starting the next chapter.
You can find the Old Man throughout the game, once per chapter. For the trophy “Always Accompanied” talk to him in every chapter.
- Old Man Location 1: Chapter 1 > Bamboo Grove > Snake Trail: From this shrine go up the stairs, he will stand on the right and gives you the Blessed Gourd.
- Old Man Location 2: Chapter 2 > Crouching Tiger Temple > Cellar: From this shrine go down the sandy path, then turn right and go to the end of the path to find him. He’s looking at the rocks there. A meditation spot is in the same place. Alternatively, you can get here from Yellow Wind Formation > Windseal Gate: Go through the gate and then take the left path to the end.
- Old Man Location 3: Chapter 3 > Pagoda Realm > Warding Temple: From this shrine go up the stairs into the temple courtyard to trigger a boss fight against the Macaque Chief. The Old Man appears during the cutscene and unlocks the Ring of Fire spell for you. This is unmissable from story progression so you can’t miss him here.
- Old Man Location 4: Chapter 4 > Temple of the Yellow Flower > Temple Entrance: From this shrine go straight ahead into the temple, then slightly to the right through the gate. In this area you find a meditation spot and lots of enemies. In the back of the area go up the stairs to find the NPC, exhaust all dialogue.
- Old Man Location 5 + Supreme Gourd Upgrade: Chapter 5 > Furnace Valley > Rakshasa Palace: From this shrine go upstairs and over the bridge. Then take the left path to reach a room with the Old Man NPC. Exhaust all dialogue with him, then interact with the fire in the middle of the same room to upgrade your gourd to the “Supreme Gourd”. It’s the best gourd in the game, Mythical grade (orange color in inventory), and has 10 healing charges. You must have upgraded your regular Gourd to 9 healing charges at the Shen Monkey (Chapter 1 > Bamboo Forest > Marsh of White Mist). For the required upgrade materials refer to Luojia Fragrant Vine locations.
To get the Supreme Gourd you don’t need to have talked to the Old Man everywhere. But to get the trophy “Always Accompanied” you must have talked to him everywhere. Can still do it in New Game+ if you missed him. In Chapter 4 + 5 he’s still there after the story.

This is in the cave just before the “Rockrest Flat” altar. The boss is just a rock and neither attacks nor defends itself. Just clear out the other enemies in the cave and then you can freely hit the boss. It will drop the Key Item “Stone Essence” which you need for the next step.
- Give the “Stone Essence” to the “Man-in-Stone“. Location: Fright Cliff > Squall Hideout: from the shrine, take the path to the right, go through the ravine that has a little bit of water in it. At the end of the ravine are some black thorns, interact with them, it’s actually a guy trapped in them. Give him the “Stone Essence” you got from the “Mother of Stone“. - Venom Daoist Location 2: Temple of the Yellow Flower > Court of Illumination: From this shrine turn around and take the path directly across. When there’s a split in the path go left. Then you get a cutscene with the Venom Daoist spawning. Must have defeated him at the first location. Defeat him again, he has two phases, each with a full healthbar. After the fight interact with the wall in front of you to enter the secret area “Purple Cloud Mountain”.
- Finish Secret Area: Purple Cloud Mountain > Cloudnest Peak: At the end of the Purple Cloud Mountain area, you encounter the Duskveil boss. He has two health bars (transforms after beating his first form).
Rice Cocoons / Silkworm Deity / Proto-Amourworm Quest
This quest unlocks the “Elder Armourworm” Spirit.
Webbed Hollow > The Verdure Bridge: From the shrine, go across the wooden planks, then head left. Go right past the two lanterns to enter a room with 4 chests. Continue past them to enter the area with the “Elder Amourworm” boss. Kill it to obtain the key item “Proto Armourworm”. If you haven’t already, do Chen Loong’s quest to get access Zodiac Village. At Zodiac Village, deliver the Proto Armourworm item to Chen Loong (the dragon). Now head back to The Verdure Bridge and destroy any spider cocoons you find until you have 3 Rice Cocoons. You may already own these if you’ve been destroying them on your first visit, they are random drops from white spider cocoons throughout Webbed Hollow. Now return to Zodiac Village and feed the Rice Cocoons to the worm which you’ll find next to the pots (in the area above the two monkeys). You can only feed him one Rice Cocoon, then you have to rest. Rinse and repeat for all of them. Once you’ve fed him the third Rice Cocoon, rest once more and you’ll be able to collect this Spirit at the location the worm was at.
Purple Altars / Letters Quest [MISSABLE]
MISSABLE QUEST: This quest has to be completed BEFORE finishing Chapter 4 (BEFORE beating the boss “Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master”). After this the purple altars can no longer be interacted with. You can still do it in New Game+ if you missed this. The quest is mandatory for 100% Journal Completion because it unlocks the Character entry for “Crane Immortal”.
Throughout Chapter 4 you can find purple glowing altars. Each of them has a letter on it that you can take.
All Purple Altar Locations:
- Webbed Hollow > The Verdure Bridge: From Verdure Bridge take the left path over the green bridge with roots growing on it, turn left, where two lanterns are drop down the right side and go forward until you go upstairs to a village. Progress upstairs through the village, then you will reach the purple altar at the top of the village. It will trigger a cutscene. Afterward you can loot the letter from the altar.
- Webbed Hollow > Cliff of Oblivion: Directly in front of this shrine is another purple altar.
- Webbed Hollow > Cliff of Oblivion: After this shrine you’ll have to defeat the story boss “Buddha’s Right Hand”. After that you can go over the broken hand. Go down the path, on the left side you can drop down and go over a wooden hanging bridge. This leads to a narrow wooden beam with spider arms slashing out of cocoons. Use Cloud Step to turn invisible and run over the beam, thus you won’t get attacked. On the other end you reach a hidden shrine called “Relief of the Fallen Loong”. To the left of that shrine enter the cave area and you’ll find the purple altar at the end of the path (before dropping down the cliffs).
- Temple of Yellow Flowers > Court of Illumination: Directly in front of this shrine (final shrine of this chapter). However, this purple altar is blocked off by an invisible wall. The invisible wall goes away after collecting the other 3 altars.
After interacting with all 4 altars, you will get attacked by the Supreme Inspector. He has a lot of health but you don’t need to fully defeat him. After taking 15% of his health a cutscene will trigger. The Crane Immortal will talk to you which adds his entry to the journal. Then you can open the golden container in front of you to collect a Celestial Nonary Pill (increases Stamina).
Daoist Mi / Missing Bodies Quest [MISSABLE]
- Quest Start: Purple Cloud Mountain > Valley of Blooms – First, do the Venom Daoist Quest to reach the Secret Chapter 4 area. Before crossing wooden bridge to the first shrine there (called “Valley of Blooms”), you can talk to a red snake on a tree. Exhaust all dialogue with the snake. Then advance through the secret area until you reach the shrine “Petalfall Hamlet”. From there go up the stairs, on the left you will find a masked man NPC. He’s “Daoist Mi”. He asks you to look for missing bodies in the village.
- Solution: You have to defeat the yellow-robed enemies in the village area around the quest giver (to his right) until one of them drops the “Violet Hail” key item. It’s a completely random drop. If nobody drops it, rest at shrine and kill them all again until you get it. Then give it to Daoist Mi to fight him which finishes the quest. It will add his entry to the journal, he counts as a character. Needed to complete all journal entries.
- Reward: Violet Hail (Spell)

Gorgeresh says
For the Captain Spirits Quest in chapter 3
Captain Lotus-Vision is found near the Pagoda realm – Upper Pagoda
From the shrine turn around and jump down try to land on the building to reduce fall damage
Lamialadon says
Just to add to this, defeating him unlocks the purple seal you see on some of the doors in this area.
Once you have all 4 captain spirits return to the prisoner to give them back & he’ll give you an item used in crafting.
Also noticed a mistake, you get snow fox brush curio for the fox quest, not tiger tally, you probably had that equipped.
BEANO says
This also ties into the prisoner quest. Once All four captains have been captured go back to the prisoner to complete his quest
Dix3n says
Killing Captain Lotus-Vision unlocks the prisons with a purple circle infront of them.
In one of those prisons (near lower pagoda shrine) is an NPC, give him the 4 captain spirits and he will give you a reward.
Tyler says
There is a fourth shrine in chapter four in the area “Relief of the Fallen Loong”, found by going left across the rope bridge after the “Buddha’s Right Hand” boss.
Tyler says
For the NPC at Petalfall Hamlet you need to kill enemies in the hamlet until they drop the key item he is looking for, then you get a 2 phase boss for doing so with the “Violet Hail” transformation spell as a reward.
Tyler says
And I’m guessing since you said the NPC dissapears later then that would make this missable.
Nawaf Alofi says
Man in stone in chapter 2 . You can visit him again to buy items from him
Naru says
For the “Missing bodies” quest in Chapter 4 I obtained a key item (don’t remember the name) from the enemies to the right when entering the area (the NPC being on the left), which after given to the NPC started a fight against the boss “Daoist Mi”
Naru says
i forgot to mention this was a two phase boss fight, and the rewards were:
1473 Will
2 Silk
1 Cold Iron Leaves
Transformation: Violet Hail
Seoul_Vortex says
Going off of the previous comment you can find the fourth captain in Chapter 3.
Go to:
Valley of Ecstasy-Longevity Road
Immediately go right past the bat enemy thing until you see a large crumpled up body then near it’s hands you can acquire its soul to get the key item.
Note that for this captain you don’t need to fight them!
Seoul_Vortex says
My mistake I read it wrong…
The comment above me was correct.
But I can confirm that it is connected to the prisoner quest as completing it gives you both a character portrait and weapon part.
LukasInWriting says
Pagoda Realm > Snow-Veiled Trail The big open are you can run up to the textured wall and interact with it to go to another area.
I don’t know if you need the Loong Scale you get from the Hidden Chest in the Yellow Sand area.
When i walked up to the wall it just said R2 GO
Chaos says
I found the other captain spirit in the forest region pre the thunder clap temple close to one of the giants, where I could just claim its soul.. doing handing in 4 to the general ends his quest and he gives you an item to create a thrust spear
Chaos says
also not to sure how/why or whats different from my playthrough.. I managed to get to the final shrine where you fight some red hand face boss with wings (I managed to get 3 shrines before I got to the 4th shrine or maybe I finished the secret area first ?
I still dont know what to do with the rice cacoons though
ThiophenSJ says
About Rice Cocoons:
You can bring the Proto-Amourworm to Chen-Loong, the dragon in your hub that grows seeds. He will grow the worm. You need to feed that with 3 rice cocoons over time to finally get a spirit.
mort says
for the chapter 4 purple altars
there are 4 and the one that is blocked is unblocked if its the final one collected and it spawns a boss that despawns and a cutscene plays when you get about 20% off im not sure if theres another part to this quest
mort says
the 4th one is in a secret area after cliff of oblivion instead of going to the main path to the right after you drop down theres a bone bridge to the left you need to corss it and theres a small bridge w spiders hanging so you need to kill them or else theyll make you fall to your death, a good way to kill them is the charged thrust spear and in that area youll find the altar
Chaos says
the purple altar quest requires the 4th altar.. I see you listed 3 but the moment you walk through and claim the 4th one (and face the red hand guy) all the other shrines disappear so I can’t really remember where it is but you need a 3 altars to get to the 4th altar
Chaos says
One of the 5 carts not sure what type… you need to use the fire cloak to run on the lava shortly after the Valley Entrance in Furnace Valley
Instead of taking a sharp right after the first shield enemy head towards the worms at the back you will see the one cart at the back
It wont fight you, but you can tug on some rope in front.. it will complain after the 3rd one that if you pull it out it will die.. so not to sure if there is a separate quest here first or something but yea thats the 4th cart
FourthBrother says
I’m pretty sure it’s Ma Tianba, the Horse Guai that you can meet in every chapter up to chapter 5. He’s by the cave meditation point in Ch 1, the Earth Wolf in Ch 2, the top of a staircase with lightning monks and blind monks in Ch 3, stuck in a cocoon after the Centipede fight in Ch 4 and he’s in the cart in Ch 5. After you pull the rope out and kill Keeper of the Flaming Mountain in Ch 5, you can return to his cart and receive a transformation from his spirit.
Tyler says
Half-way along the crater in chapter 5 where the rolling ball was theres a path that leads to a few more bosses, the fifth cart is also down that path.
Faisal says
Ch-4 letter quest purple altar
One more letter
In relief of the fallen long shrine -webbed hollow-
From there go through the set path you will find one letter upside
Lazy says
Ok I found what you’re supposed to do with the “Rice Cocoons / Silkworm Deity / Proto-Amourworm Quest (Unknown)”
You give Proto-Amourworm to Chen Loong at the hub, it’ll spawn a little worm near the farmable plants.
After feeding the worms three Rice Cocoons, I rested and it turned into a spirit you can then collect.
ankhseram says
In Chapter 3; if you have all 4 Spritit of Captain.
▪︎The Spirit of Captain Lotus-Vision
▪︎The Spirit of Captain Void-Illusion
▪︎The Spirit of Captain Kalpa-Wave
▪︎The Spirit of Captain Wise-Voice
you can bring for the unknown npc prisoner in Pagoda Realm-Lower Pagoda. there will be a cutscene and he give you weapon material
Jen says
Xu Dog Quest – meeting him at Cellar area option #2 will only work if you have defeated Tiger Vanguard King. You need the Keeness of Tiger item to open the stone wall door by the Windseal Gate.
DRAGONDEFEYES says
“Rice Cocoons / Silkworm Deity / Proto-Amourworm Quest (Unknown)”
Go to Chen Loong in the main hub with the tiger blacksmith and gourd upgrader etc
he has a dialogue option with the protoworm and you can grow these rice cocoons
DRAGONDEFEYES says
my bad, the protoworm is a worm that spawns next to Chen Loong after giving him it, you can feed it the 3 rice cocoons, rest at the shrine and get the elder amour spirit where it was
Akoul says
For the purple talismans in chapter 4 you say :
MISSABLE QUEST: This quest has to be completed BEFORE finishing Chapter 4 (BEFORE beating the boss “Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master”). After this the purple altars can no longer be interacted with. You can still do it in New Game+ if you missed this. The quest is mandatory for 100% Journal Completion because it unlocks the Character entry for “Crane Immortal”.
__________________________________________________
I am still in the temple entrance in Yellow flower area, so i’m far from reaching the boss yet or even the last talisman. Still when I went back to get the missing one I didn’t get before I couldn’t interact with it, it became just a normal pillar, I went to check the two others and they had still a little purple glow but not the one I missed… Maybe it is related to the spider you fight before moving to the Yellow flower area ? because you can see a spider help you in the cutscene I would bet it’s not the one you were fighting
Josh says
The always accompanied trophy didn’t pop for me after getting the supreme gourd?
PowerPyx says
Make sure you also talk to the Old Man in his other locations.
Kortoas says
A bit late but for the horse npc quest you don’t need to beat chapter 5 just the yin-yang fish
Armed says
Got bugged on Shigandang. Still got 6 eyes of Buddah, deafeated and mission non complete
