  • Do cheats disable trophies?: There are no cheats, the ones from the original games no longer work

Introduction

Welcome to the Crash Bandicoot Remaster Trophy Guide & Roadmap. This game is a PS4 Remaster of the old PS1 version. The levels and Gems are the same but the game has gotten a complete visual overhaul. For the first time ever, you can play the character “Coco” in addition to the old Crash Bandicoot that we all know and love. A DLC consisting of two trophies has also been added and contains missions that did not exist in the original game.

The trophies are fairly straight forward. You must destroy all boxes in each mission to earn the Gems (for Colored Gems you must do this without dying). Gold relics are earned from getting record times in time trial speedruns. The rest of the trophies will come naturally along the way. It’s not an easy platinum to get. Some speedruns are very challenging because there are no checkpoints, so you aren’t allowed to die. With a lot of practice it’s all possible but get ready to replay the same missions many times. If you want to go from easy to hard, start with Crash Bandicoot 3, then 2 and 1 last. The first game is by far the hardest and the third the easiest.

Step 1: Beat the Story

The first step is very simple: enjoy the game and get used to the controls. You can replay missions at any time. This is good practice for the gems run. Focusing on the gems right away is not really feasible because you must first get the 6 colored gems (more on that in the next two steps).

Step 2: Get All 6 Colored Gems

Colored Gems are obtained by destroying ALL boxes without dying in certain missions (you are, however, allowed to die in the bonus sections). The reason you need them is because they unlock otherwise inaccessible paths in all sorts of levels. These paths lead to new boxes that are required for the Clear Gems. The Clear Gems are unlocked by simply destroying all the boxes in a mission (but unlike colored gems you are allowed to die as often as you want).

Without the colored gems it’s impossible to get the clear ones! There are 6 colors in total. They are unlocked from the following levels:

  • Green: Lost City (Island 2)
  • Orange: Generator Room (Island 3)
  • Blue: Toxic Waste (Island 3)
  • Red: Slippery Climb (Island 3)
  • Purple: Lights Out (Island 3)
  • Yellow: The Lab (Island 3)

As you can see most of them are from the last (third) island so you’ll have to do a lot of backtracking to get the normal gems afterwards. Remember for these types of Gems you are not allowed to die while destroying every single box! If you meet both requirements in a single run it gives you the Gem at the end of the mission.

Also see Crash Bandicoot PS4 Remaster: Gems Locations Guide.

Step 3: Get All Clear Gems

Now that you have the colored gems new paths with additional boxes become available in many levels. You must destroy all boxes in each mission to earn the clear gems. For these you are allowed to die as often as you want. Just destroy all boxes and the Gem unlocks at the end of the mission!

There are 26 Gems total and you need to find all of them to earn the trophy “The Ultimate Gem Path”.

Also see Crash Bandicoot PS4 Remaster: Gems Locations Guide.

Step 4: Speedruns (Gold Relics)

This is going to be the most challenging part of the game! To earn Relics you must finish the time trials (speedruns) in record time. There are 3 possible ratings depending on how fast you are: sapphire (slow), gold (good), platinum (best).

Luckily, you only need all gold relics and not the platinum ones. To beat the required times you must finish the mission as quickly as possible without dying and must get time crates along the way (checkpoints are disabled during time trials). The time crates will freeze the clock for a few seconds. Focusing on not dying is often better than going at full speed. You can slow down and still earn a gold relic so long as you collect the time crates and stay alive. Time Trial is unlocked after beating a level for the first time. You can then pick up a stopwatch at the start of the level. To see the target times press L1 in level select.

The N. Trepid Crash Bandicoot!
Collect all the Crash Bandicoot Trophies.

Papu Popped
Defeat Papu-Papu.
Automatic story unlock, cannot be missed.
Ripper Ruined
Defeat Ripper Roo.

Automatic story unlock, cannot be missed.
Cortex N. Capacitated
Defeat N. Cortex.
Automatic story unlock, cannot be missed.
Spin Doctor
In a single level, spin an enemy into another enemy twice.
The very first level is great for this. There are lots of crabs everywhere. Spin into them and they will likely hit another nearby crab — repeat this twice in one playthrough of the same level to make the trophy pop. It would be very hard to miss unless you jump on them.
I Meant To Do That!
Spin away an Extra Life.
When an extra life drops from a box press the Square-Button to do a melee attack to “spin it away”. Extra lives drop very frequently from boxes. They look like a Crash Bandicoot icon.
That’s What Those Do!
Enter a Bonus Round after collecting 3 Character Tokens.
See trophies “Cortex’s Crazed Contest” and “Cortex’s Terrifying Trial” (will come automatically when you do either one of those two trophies).

Alternatively, this can be done in the second level “Jungle Rollers”. You will find character icons in boxes. You need 3 of them to unlock the bonus level. The bonus level can be found halfway through the mission by stepping on a glowing platform (must have picked up the 3 character icons by then).

A Hidden Gem
Discover a Gem Path after earning a Color Gem.
First you need a colored gem. They are obtained from certain levels by destroying all boxes without dying. The first opportunity for this is in the level “Lost City” (Island 2). Destroy every single box of this level in one go without losing a life. This will unlock the “Green Gem” after the mission as a reward.

Now backtrack to the level “Jungle Rollers” (Island 1). The Green Gem opens up an alternate Gem Path in this mission. Look for the colored gem platform in this level and step on it.

Cortex’s Crazed Contest
Earn the Key in Sunset Vista.
This can be done on island 2, in the level “Sunset Vista”. To earn the key you must find the 3 cortex character tokens in this level and complete his bonus round. Destroy all of the boxes and you’ll find the tokens. Please note that the trophy unlocks at the very end of the level and not immediately after doing Cortex’s bonus round.
Cortex’s Terrifying Trial
Earn the Key in Jaws of Darkness.
This can be done on island 3, in the level “Jaws of Darkness”. To earn the key you must find the 3 cortex character tokens in this level and complete his bonus round. Destroy all of the boxes and you’ll find the tokens. Please note that the trophy unlocks at the very end of the level and not immediately after doing Cortex’s bonus round.
More Gems Are Better Than None
Earn 13 Gems.
See trophy “The Ultimate Gem Path”.
The Ultimate Gem Path
Earn 26 Gems.
There are a total of 26 Gems in Crash Bandicoot, divided into two types of Gems:

Colored Gems (6 total): Obtained by destroying all boxes in certain levels WITHOUT DYING. You must meet both requirements in a single run. You are allowed to die in bonus sections. You just can’t die in the main level.
Clear Gems (20 total): Obtained by destroying all boxes in certain levels (dying is allowed). To reach all boxes you need the colored gems, they open up new gem paths to boxes that are otherwise inaccessible!

It’s important that you get all the colored gems first. Without them you can’t get some of the boxes. The Gems are not actual collectibles. Rather, they are mission rewards for destroying all the boxes in a given level. When you do they spawn at the end of the mission.

Keep in mind that you must also destroy the boxes in bonus sections. Some boxes drop character icons. Having 3 icons of the same type opens up a bonus part somewhere in the level. These tend to contain lots of boxes and are required to get the gems.

For their specific details please refer to the Crash Bandicoot PS4 Remaster: Gems Locations Guide.

Catch Me If You Can!
Earn 5 Relics.
See trophy “Practice Makes Perfect!”.
Could Go… All… The… Way!
Earn 10 Relics (gold or better).
See trophy “Practice Makes Perfect!”.
Practice Makes Perfect!
Earn 26 Relics (gold or better).
There are a total of 26 Relics in the game. Relics are rewards from doing speedruns / time trials. When you finish a mission in record time you earn a relic. There are 3 possible ratings depending on how fast you are: sapphire (slow), gold (good), platinum (best).

Luckily, you only need all gold relics and not the platinum ones. It’s still going to be the hardest trophy in the game. To beat the required times you must finish the mission as quickly as possible without dying and must get time crates along the way (checkpoint are disabled). The time crates will freeze the clock for a few seconds. Focusing on not dying is often better than going at full speed. You can slow down and still earn a gold relic as long as you collect the time crates and stay alive.

Please note that the time trials only unlock after beating a level for the first time. You will then find a stopwatch at the start of the level. Pick it up to start the timer. You can press L1 in level select to see the target times for each individual relic.

Feeeed Meeeee!
Die.
You earn this trophy when being killed by one of the Venus Flytrap enemies in the level “Jungle Rollers” (Island 1).
I See London, I See France
Die.
You earn this trophy when being electrocuted in the level “Cortex Power” (Island 3). There are many electric traps in this level. Simply run into one of them.
The Box That Broke the Bandicoot’s Back
Miss a lot of boxes.
At the end of each mission it shows how many boxes you’ve found and missed. Just do a quick mission and completely ignore all the boxes, then the trophy unlocks at the end.

I did this in the first mission and got only one box (missed 48 boxes). The first mission is the best option as it is the shortest.

No Holds Barred
Defeat 5 enemies with Coco’s Spin.
Coco is a new character in the PS4 version. After the first boss fight you see a side path on the island map. Enter the side path to unlock Coco. This lets you press R2 to switch between Coco & Crash (before starting a mission). A good spot for the trophy is N Sanity beach where it only takes half a minute to earn. Press Square-Button to use her spin attack and kill 5 enemies total in one level. You don’t have to kill 5 at once, you can kill them one by one. You can also farm kills by letting yourself get killed.
On Cloud 99
Earn 99 Lives.

Lives can be found from many boxes. They will drop a crash bandicoot icon that you can pick up for an extra life. These boxes show up in many places throughout the levels so you’ll run into them very frequently. You must have 99 lives at the same time. In the bottom right it says how many lives you have.

You also earn a life when 100 apples have been collected. Destroy all boxes you come across and pick up the apples.

It’s possible to farm lives by repeating the same level over and over again and collecting all apples in it. An early life farming location is on the second island, level “Lost City”. Bats will be spawning infinitely here. Stand under a bat spawn and kill them with jump attacks (X + Square). You get 12 apples for killing them all. They respawn after two seconds and you can repeat infinitely. It takes 5 minutes to earn 10 lives (50 minutes to earn the trophy).

The fastest way (later in the game) is on island 3, Level “Castle Machinery”. It requires the green gem which you get by destroying all boxes in Lost City without dying. Then you can use the green gem platform at the very start of Castle Machinery which earns you 30 lives. When you have the lives, pause the game (Options-Button) and quit the mission. Create a manual save game and quit out to the title screen. Now select Crash Bandicoot 1 in the title screen and hit ‘Continue’. The 30 lives will respawn and you can repeat as often as you want. Just keep in mind you always need to create a manual save, quit out to main menu and hit continue to make the lives respawn. This will earn you the trophy in just 5 minutes.

Lost Treasures DLC Trophy Guide

You can download the “Lost Treasures DLC” in PlayStation Store for free. It adds the “Stormy Ascent” level on the third island of Crash Bandicoot 1. You will then see a purple glowing dot on top of the tower of the third island (above the Lab level). This is where you start Stormy Ascent. Alternatively, if you haven’t beaten the game yet, you can stand on the purple dot at the start of the first island and it will teleport you to the tower on island 3. The DLC level can be accessed from the beginning, regardless of your progress in the main game.

The Crown Jewel
Seek and destroy.

This trophy is obtained in the DLC level “Stormy Ascent” by getting the gem. You earn the gem by destroying all boxes in this mission (including the 22 bonus level boxes).

An Ancient Antiquity
Do hard time.

This trophy is obtained in the DLC level “Stormy Ascent” by getting the gold relic in the time trial. After beating the level for the first time a stopwatch will spawn at the start of the level. Pick it up and complete the level in record time without dying. There are no checkpoints, so if you die the level restarts from the beginning. It’s a very challenging level and requires a lot of practice.

Target Time: Platinum = 3:10:00 — Gold = 4:30:00 — Sapphire = 7:00
My Time: 3:46:59

1) At the start, wait for the stairs to go flat before picking up the stopwatch.
2) Jump up the stairs (easy)
3) When you encounter the 2nd scientist, jump on his head immediately to be boosted up the elevator (saves time)
4) At the top pick up the time crates. The next section is relatively easy.
5) Eventually you come to two sliding platforms and a bunch of platforms spinning in circles. This part is very time sensitive and it’s easy to die here if your timing is off. Better wait and let the platform slide 3-4 times to time your jump. It’s better to wait here than to die.
6) After the next scientist you must jump down several stairs with spikes around them. You should have at least 1 Aku Aku mask left (at best you’ll have 2 by this point). The last set of stairs is a bit tricky so if fail the Aku Aku mask will save you. If you get hit by spikes just keep running downstairs, you can’t take damage for a short period of time after getting hit.
7) Immediately after the aforementioned stairs there 3 sliding platforms. You’ll want to use a high jump to get from platform 1 to 2 (hold down X). From platform 2 to 3 the low jump (tap X for a short moment, don’t hold) worked better for me.
8) When climbing up the tower there are fast platforms coming out of the walls. Make sure you don’t hit the spikes. It would be ideal if you have 1 Aku Aku left by this point to save you.
9) Once on top of the tower, let the scientist throw goo until there’s an opening to jump onto the moving platforms.
10) There’s a very tricky part near the end with two platforms coming out the wall simultaneously. Jump on the first just as it comes out the wall. Then stand on it until the last possible moment (let it slide under your feet) before jumping onto the next one.
11) Last tricky part is the 3 birds. Jump on the first bird just after it hits the wall and starts moving away from you. Timing is extremely important here.

Practice the last checkpoint until you can do it perfectly! The last section is by far the hardest and has no room for error.

Some of the levels are very hard to speedrun without dying.
You must also destroy all boxes without dying for the colored gems. The other 2 gems are a bit easier. The first one is by far the hardest.

Sorry to hear this happened to you! The anti-spam software that my site uses is very strict. Because I don’t have a moderation team I need to rely on such software to do the job and sometimes it gets it wrong (resulting in false positives).

I’m aware of the issue and will look into other options over the summer.
Since your comment went through whatever you changed apparently worked 🙂

Fun fact: about 2000 spam comments get blocked on my site per day. If it wasn’t for anti-spam measures the comment section would be unreadable :D

I changed browsers from Chrome to IE. Trying Chrome again, to see if it goes through!

But yeah, it would definitely be filled with a lot of spam, download this, watch this, etc etc.

Slippery Climb without dying + all boxes & again speedrun without dying is very challenging. Some levels in late game are extremely hard to speedrun.
It’s the most difficult game of the triology. Crash 2 & 3 are much easier.

Yes I can see how this might even be a 10/10 for some people, or a 6/10 for someone who played the PS1 version recently. Some levels are extremely unfair. Not just to beat them without dying but to do speedruns in them without checkpoints is very punishing.
You’ll enjoy Crash 2 & 3 more. Start with Crash 3, it’s the easiest & most enjoyable to plat. Crash 1 is by far the most difficult.

Personally I don’t have that problem but I heard many others saying the controls are laggy for them. Could be a matter of perception, or a game issue, or input lag from the TV.

They have to be all from the first game, yes.
Each game has its own trophy list with its own stats.

The first game is the hardest by far. It’s all a matter of practice. Replaying levels over and over until you know all enemy placements and all time boxes. Can take a while to do some of these perfectly. I’m still working on them myself.

Great set of guides! I don’t blame you for rating the difficulty so high. It’s true that the clear gems are much easier to obtain in the remaster. In the original PS1 version you weren’t allowed to die or you’d lose boxes collected before a checkpoint AND you couldn’t repeat bonus stages if you messed up. But even though those were changed now, you still have to complete the levels in one life anyways for the time trials, which is really the toughest trophies for the platinums.
