Ghost of Yotei The Way of Dual Katana Walkthrough

October 1, 2025 by LunarMothea Leave a Comment

The Way of Dual Katana is the 3rd main tale in Ghost of Yotei. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the The Way of Dual Katana main quest.

  • Chapter: 1 – The Lone Wolf
  • Region: Yotei Grasslands
  • Requirement: Complete Main Tale 1: Prologue
  • Reward: Dual Katana
  • Quest Info: Rumor has it the old dual katana master is hiding out on Mount Yotei. Maybe he’ll teach me his technique.

Starting Location: The Way of Dual Katana

Head west from Yotei’s Shadow Inn to reach the foot of Mount Yotei. Take out the outlaws camped among the red flowers.

Then squeeze through a cap between two rock faces to enter the path to the main tale. From there continue up the path between the two bamboo forests. Watch the floor for leaves, these are pitfall traps!

If you fall into any of the pit traps, jump and then press :r2: to use your grappling hook to climb out of the hole.

When you see the wolf on top of a rock, squeeze into the cave opening to trigger a cutscene.

Find the Dual Katana Master’s home

When you regain control, turn left and follow the path up the mountain.

Climb up a couple rocks on the wall.

To the immediate left is a grappling hook point on a tree. Use it to swing across the gap.

Follow up the large rock steps as it curves slightly to the left.

At the top, jump across the loose gravel to the next set of rock steps.

Continue up the rock steps to another gap across the loose gravel. Jump across the gap.

Keep going up the path. Make sure to avoid the pitfall in the patch of grass.

Soon, you reach a gap with a rock ladder on the other side. Jump across and then climb up the ladder.

Before continuing up the next rocks to the left, loot the chest to the right to get 8 pieces of Precious Metal.

After climbing up the rock ladder, the path leads you to Hanbei’s House, the Dual Katana Master.

Head into the house. The entrance is on the opposite side of the house from your approach. Straight inside, interact with the katana sitting on the opposite wall. This starts a cutscene.

Follow Hanbei

Hanbei runs up the path to the east. He only moves if you are close to him. Stay with him until he reaches a camp.

Pick up training katana

After Hanbei stops walking, interact with the standing training katana in the middle of the camp.

An event starts where Hanbei tosses hot coals at you. Use :square: attacks to slice them when they get close. However, your timing will always be off here because your arms aren’t trained to be fast enough yet.

After that, you get a dialogue option. These choices don’t affect the outcome of the quest, so choose whichever option you like.

Use your left hand to cut bamboo

When you regain control, follow Hanbei north a short distance. Interact with the standing bamboo to begin the event. You are supposed to remember the button order, then quickly press the buttons. As soon as you start inputting the buttons, they disappear so you must remember them. There are 3 stages to this, each time the combo gets longer, but the input always remains the same.

Whether you complete it or not, the quest continues after a couple of tries.

In the following cutscene, another dialogue choice pops up. Just like the last one, choose whichever one you prefer.

You get another crack at cutting bamboo after the cutscene.

Relive the flashback

After a cutscene, you get a flashback of your childhood.

Take the elevated path to the left to grab a mushroom. Then, continue through the tall grass.

When you see a wolf, approach it in the tall grass to trigger a cutscene. A man will appear who will escort you back home.

Head down the path between the rock face on the left and the tall grass on the right. Grab any red mushrooms you see along the way.

Eventually, you come to a fallen log at the edge of the forest. Lord Saito and Jubei lift the log for you to pick more mushrooms.

Return Home

Head out of the forest and go right to find your home just up the short hill.

Approach your parents to start a cutscene.

Cut the bamboo

Take another round at cutting bamboo. This is also the first of 15 Bamboo Strike Collectibles, which increase your Spirit (the golden dots in the bottom left of the screen that let you perform special actions).

Follow Hanbei

Follow Hanbei back to camp and pick up the katana on the bench where Hanbei stops.

Go through another round of cutting coals. Now your arms are trained for speed and you will be able to hit them consistently.

Following Hanbei’s direction, switch your weapon by holding :r2: and pressing :square: . You can see what weapons are available to you in the bottom left corner of the screen when you hold :r2: . After his second question, switch back to dual katanas by holding :r2: and :x: .

Follow Hanbei back to his home.

Defeat Saito’s men

Enemies will arrive. The first round is three men. Take them out, and then another round of three men come after you.

After that, a group of four men show up. This time, switch to a single katana to defeat these enemies.

Finally, a ronin approaches with two henchmen. Against the ronin, use dual katanas and hold :triangle: to begin a flurry of attacks. Keep mashing :triangle: until the ronin falls.

This finishes The Way of Dual Katana in Ghost of Yotei.
