A Promise of Treasure is a side tale in Ghost of Yotei. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the A Promise of Treasure side quest.
- Chapter: Chapter 2 – The Onyro
- Region: Oshima Coast
- Quest Giver: Masa
- Requirement: available upon entering Oshima Coast for the first time during Main Tale: The Saito Brothers
- Quest Info: I bought a map off a father in Benten Port. There’s a spot marked northwest of the Tokuyama Hills.
Objectives:
- Find the treasure
- Defeat Saito’s soldiers
- Visit Masa’s family
Starting Location: A Promise of Treasure
Inside the house, located behind the offering altar, climb up the ladder and talk to Masa and his father. Here, give him either food or money to start the quest.
Find the treasure
You will get a treasure map that you need to place on the map.
Travel to the given location, and you will find something to climb up the cliff. Instead of climbing up, turn left, move a bit forward, and you will see a little opening and a chest in the cliff. This will trigger a little cutscene where Masa arrives and soon after him a few soldiers.
Defeat Saito’s soldiers
After the cutscene, just kill all soldiers.
Visit Masa’s family
Now return to Masa’s home and talk to the father. You can eother give him more food, money or just nothing.
This finishes A Promise of Treasure in Ghost of Yotei.

I just entered location and they’re no where to be found near the house… Must have to progress in story to have them show up.

Unfortunately I think I advanced the main story too far as this quest does not show for me. I only see a woman out in front of the house crying over a dead body
SigmaPrime says
I have the same issue as Brian–only it’s a man crying over a woman’s body in my game and it’s been this way since before I completed any further main missions after getting into Oshima Coast proper. I am right before the point of no return to endgame and seemingly still cannot do this quest. Maybe it will change in postgame, but otherwise I have no idea lol.

A Promise of Treasure Sub-Tale Fix
Found a reliable solution across two separate playthroughs.
The Fix:
Fast travel away from Benten Port (I used Home), then return to Benten Port Main Entrance. Both times, Masa appeared during Saito’s Squad attack at the Main Entrance. Clear the hostiles, then head directly to Masa’s house behind the Onryō Altar. You’ll see an NPC run inside—follow them, climb the ladder, and Masa’s family will be there. Complete the quest.
Important Detail:
Both attacks triggered in the afternoon during sunset (late day lighting). Unknown if this is a required condition, but it was consistent across both playthroughs.
Key: The trigger appears tied to the Main Entrance attack event, fast travel reset, and possibly time of day.
Integrity First. Mission success through tested methods.

I was having this issue, tried all the solutions unsuccessfully, and completely Platinum-ed the game without this quest spawning. During this time, I already defeated the hostiles at the West entrance to town (on the South side of the river) and at the Northern entrance (near the ghost altar) without it spawning. I decided to try again for the 20+th time, and fast traveled to the main entrance of the port, and found a group of hostile nearby at the entrance to the port NE of town (on the E side of the river) and I walked forward and came across another set of hostiles at the beach on the South side of town. Without having to fast travel, I walked from the hostiles at the south side to the square with the ghost altar, and, Lo and behold, the man crying over the dead woman had finally left, and the quest had spawned. So I’m not sure what it was that finally spawned the quest, but it seems to be linked to clearing out some number of hostiles at the entrances to the port (or some particular group(s) of them. When I completed the quest, wouldn’t you know it but another set of hostiles was attacking the entrance North of the ghost altar, so apparently this port has very bad luck for avoiding ineffectually small groups of invaders.
