Mortal Shell 2 contains 5 Tarforge Upgrade Locations. These upgrades are used at the Tarforge in Marrow Keeper, which allows you to apply upgrades to Weapons, Sidearms, Tarstones, or remove upgrades from Weapons and Sidearms to regain the material used.
None of the upgrades are missable, you can find them all after the final boss in free-roam before choosing to enter New Game+.
All upgrades are found in chests, typically along the main story path. You aren’t forced to open the chests though, so it is possible to progress without obtaining all of the upgrades.
Upgrades are listed in the approximate order you will most likely unlock them during normal game progression.
#1 – Muradean Actuator (Weapon Upgrades)
In the Disciple’s Path area inside the Village Outskirts Beacon, in the chest immediately after you enter. If you skip the tutorial due to having a beta save this will already be in your inventory in the Marrow Keep.
#2 – Obsidian Lathe (Sidearm Upgrades)
From the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, go southeast to the Martyr’s Tomb dungeon, and loot the chest in the back room.
#3 – Etching Needles (Tarstone Upgrades)
In the Glutted Mire area after the Sunken Village Beacon, progress past the location of The Wandering Shepard miniboss and this is located in a chest near where Ruk was sitting before the area main boss.
#4 – Foundry Stone (Remove Upgrades)
South of Outskirts of Mammon Beacon, near the group of enemies at the gate by the castle wall.
The Foundry Stone allows you to pay Gloom to remove upgrades from Weapons and Sidearms, which returns the materials used to you.
#5 – Endless Core (Max Level Increase)
In The Unfound Path area, inside The Hidden Nave Beacon. Walk through the fog twice, then pick up the torch from the ground to progress. The chest is after escaping the fog.
The Endless Core allows you to increase Weapons and Sidearm level to +17 and above.
