Welcome to the Elden Ring Walkthrough for the Mohgwyn Palace region! Mohgwyn Palace is the location you likely spotted off in the distance in Siofra River, bathed in red light at the top of the cliffs. You can come to this location relatively early through a side quest, or right near the end of the game once you’ve progressed through the Mountaintops of the Giants. The main purpose of coming here is to fight the optional Shardbearer Mohg, Lord of Blood in his true form.
For all other regions refer to Elden Ring Walkthrough.

Progression Order:
- Reaching Mohgwyn Palace

- Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance
- Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint
- Mohg, Lord of Blood
- Cocoon of the Empyrean
Reaching Mohgwyn Palace
Mohgwyn Palace can be reached two different ways, one relatively early in the game, and one not until basically the end of the game.
Complete White Mask Varre’s Quest:
The earlier method is to complete White Mask Varre’s questline. Varre is the NPC who you can find immediately upon entering Limgrave at the site of grace. After speaking to him and advancing into Liurnia after defeating Godrick (or any other Shardbearer), you can find him again at the Rose Church.
Speak to him out front, then he will give you Festering Bloody Fingers and you need to use them to invade other players online three times. Whether you successfully kill the invaded player or not doesn’t matter, just using the Fingers to invade three times then returning to your world is enough. You can then return to him and agree to join his order, where he will then give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor item, and asks you to soak it in Maiden’s blood. The closest location to do this in Liurnia is at the Church of Inhibition, located in the northeast corner of Liurnia, through the area filled with Frenzied enemies.
Alternatively, if you still have an available Imbued Sword Key or haven’t used the one located at the Four Belfries, you can use the second warp up the hill (the one farther north) to return to the Chapel of Anticipation (the location you start the game at). Go through the Grafted Scion and return to the room you start the game in, and the dead Maiden is the the body you picked up the Tarnished’s Wizened Finger from at the start of the game.
Return to Varre and you obtain the Pureblood Knight’s Medal item. You can then use this item from your inventory to be transported directly to Mohgwyn Palace.
Portal in Consecrated Snowfields:
If you don’t want to do Varre’s quest (or kill him before completing it) then you need to wait until almost the end of the game to get to Mohgwyn palace. As you need to get to the Consecrated Snowfields, the western part of the Mountaintops of the Giants. You can check the following guide for information on how to reach this area: How to Reach West of Mountaintops of the Giants
Once you have reached this area, you need to head to a spot located on the western edge (basically straight west from the Inner Consecrated Snowfield site of grace).
Once you reach this location it will be a bunch of white tree stumps. When you approach the area you will be invaded by the NPC enemy Sanguine Noble.
Defeat this enemy, then continue towards the cliff to the west near the fallen tree. Just south of the tree you can find an Albinauric looking at a blood-covered portal. Interact with the portal to be taken to Mohgwyn Palace (the portal isn’t active until you kill the Sanguine Noble invader, so you can’t just run over here instead of fighting them).
Using the portal you are transported into a very dark cave. Follow it out and then down the cliff to the left to find the first site of grace in the area.
Palace Approach Ledge-Road
Over the edge to the west is just a huge pit, so you will need to follow the path going to the north around the cliffs, and through the crowd of Albinaurics.
The normal grey ones sitting on the ground won’t attack unless you attack them, but the new red-colored ones will attack when you get near. They have mostly the same attacks as the ones you may have run into in Liurnia, but they had new forms of dealing damage such as sprouting spikes before cartwheeling to deal extra damage.
Note that you can use Torrent in this lower area of Mohgwyn Palace, so you can just run by most of the enemies if you wish. Continue down the path until you reach the blood lake. To continue to the palace itself you need to hug the right wall until you reach the steps leading inside.
If you feel like taking a detour to the left into the middle of the blood lake, you can find a phantom tree with a Golden Seed. Just watch out for the large number of dogs and the large birds.
As you progress towards the west around the outside edge of the area, watch out for the enemies that blow horns as you approach. These summon large Skeleton ghosts to attack you. Though if you are able to kill the Albinauric quickly, it will despawn the Skeleton immediately.
Continue until you reach the steps leading into the ruins, and then you can find Map: Mohgwyn Palace located on a body before heading up the second set of stairs.
Head up the next flight of stairs, to find the second site of grace in the area.
Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance
Continue up the next flight of stairs. The whole of the Mausoleum area is full of zombie enemies that will explode when killed, inflicting Bleed status. You can feel free to just run by most of them if you want, you don’t gain a whole lot by trying to clear them all out because they don’t give many runes relative to the other enemies here.
Follow the path around the cliff until you reach a large red blob enemy blocking your path. Instead of trying to cut through it while all the enemies might be right behind you, you can just run around the left side by the tombstones and fight it from behind or just outright ignore it.
At the top of the hill, head inside the dark doorway that the group of zombies is kneeling in front of.
There aren’t any enemies in this area right off the bat, but as you progress there will be Sanguine Noble-style enemies that appear out of the ground to attack you.
They typically will spawn if you stray off the main path, so if you’re just wanting to run through the tunnel most won’t appear quick enough to attack you. If you see the first one spawn, take a right towards the room with the tombstones and the Lord’s Ruin sitting on a body ahead. In this room, you need to head around to the top right side to reach the next area of the Mausoleum.
You can then find the last site of grace before the boss just outside the doorway when you exit the cave.
Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint
Continue up the path towards the boss. On the left you can spot a large group of Albinaurics standing around a statue with a Sanguine Noble closer to the front. You can ignore this group of enemies if you want, or fight them to obtain a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone from the chest at the foot of the statue. If you choose to fight them you should try to either pick off the enemies without alerting them all, or try to use area of effect attacks to take out a large number of the Albinaurics at once. The Noble can use unique magic attacks if it is attacking you at the same time, such as making the Albinaurics spit out projectiles.
When you are ready to continue, take the elevator directly opposite the statue.
At the top, you can head inside the boss room.
Mohg, Lord of Blood
Reward: 420,000 Runes, Mohg’s Great Rune, Remembrance of the Blood Lord
If you have already fought it, then this boss is near a 1:1 copy of Mohg, the Omen with a few new attacks but in a much larger arena so it’s easier to get away from him and spam him with long-range spells. Immediately after entering the boss fight, summon your Mimic Tear ashen remains, then drink your Wondrous Mix with Cerulean Hidden Tear for infinite FP and use Comet Azur Spell to take like 50-80% of his health in one go. Then just finish him off with Rock Sling spell, he is very weak to this gravity spell and gets stunned every 4 hits or so. Your Mimic Tear will distract him. If you aren’t able to take him out extremely quick you will need to deal with his blood magic that he starts casting once he loses about 1/5 health. He will chant three times, causing three red rings to appear around your character. Once he is under half health he will chant the word “Nihil” three times, each time causing you to lose a chunk of health and healing Mohg. You need to either be able to heal through these attacks or use your Physick with the Purifying Crystal Tear mixed in, which significantly reduces the damage taken. If you don’t take him out before or during these animations, then he moves to his “second phase”, though it is basically the same as the first just his attacks now do somewhat more damage due to all of them being infused with fire at all times.
Once Mohg is defeated, you can interact with the site of grace at the top of the steps.
Cocoon of the Empyrean
There isn’t anything else to actually grab in this area, the rest of the mausoleum behind the raccoon is just empty space. If you want to activate Mohg’s rune, you need to go to the Divine Tower of East Altus. You will likely note that this is the same location as where you activate Morgott’s rune.
You just need to go there again to activate Mohg’s if you’ve already been there once, there are no new bosses or anything in the way. Just head to the top where you will now have the ability to activate Mohg’s Great Rune.
