Hold off on spending Oni Stones until you can unlock Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range. Together, these three Special Skills make it far easier to track down every collectible in the game, from equipment-enhancement materials to chests holding Power and Oni Stones. While exploring, get into the habit of holding L2/LT and repeatedly pressing R2/RT so nothing of value slips past you.
Complete the side content as you go, save all the citizens you can, and explore as thoroughly as possible. All of this helps you get stronger and unlock equipment such as charms.
You can still free-roam and find all collectibles up until the Point of No Return before the final mission “The Clash At Rendaino”. If you keep a manual save from this point, then you can still clean up everything from there (after the story you can also click “Continue” in the main menu to be put back before the final mission). During the story just grab what you find on your own, then do the cleanup before the final mission and refer to the collectible guides.
For trophies & achievements you need 100% completion, everything is required. Since Carnage difficulty isn’t available in the first playthrough, you will need 2 playthroughs anyway and could also grab the collectibles in New Game+ if you prefer.
The following DOES carry over into New Game+: Awakened Oni Abilities, any enhanced basic and special Skills, Hozuki Pouches and Pouch Enhancements, Items, Charms and Charm Enhancements, Genma Notes, Lion Dogs.
