Fishing is a mechanic you won’t unlock until you start the side quest “Looking Glass” in the Great Desert. After completing it, you’ll get access to Clyde’s shop, which will sell you bait that you can use for fishing, as well as other useful items in exchange for fishing points, which can be earned by catching fish. There are a total of 25 fish, but you only need to catch 20 in order to earn Lonely Fisherman, so there is some wiggle room to ignore some of the harder to catch fish.
Before you actually start finishing, it’s heavily recommended to go into the accessibility settings and turn on “Fishing Controls Replacement” to make fishing a lot easier. This will make it so you can hold instead of having to spam press it, and make it so you only have to hold instead of slowly pressing it until you reach the blue line to pull the fish in closer.
There are 5 different sizes of fish, with each of them liking a specific kind of bait as well as being harder to catch the bigger the size you get.
- Small fish – More likely to catch using Small Shrimp.
- Medium fish – More likely to catch using Wriggling Insect.
- Large fish – More likely to catch using Fish Slice.
- Gigantic fish – More likely to catch using Special Bait.
- Jumbo fish – Can only be caught with Fantastic Bait. (Unlocked by completing “Where Is The Fantastic Bait” request).
Other than the jumbo fish, you can catch any of the other 4 sizes with any bait, but using the bait they like will make it more likely to catch that size. There is also another type of bait called Strange Bait which will increases the chances of catching junk and other miscellaneous stuff. None of the stuff caught with Strange Bait counts towards fish progress and you cannot buy Strange Bait. The only way to get it is by finding some in boxes that you catch while fishing. If you run out of bait and don’t have any fishing points to buy more, don’t fear as you can still catch fish without any bait, it’ll just be slower and you might not be able to catch larger fish.
There is also 4 different fishing data items you can get that will improve you fishing skills, allowing you to catch the larger fish. If one of the fishing data’s that Clyde sells isn’t appearing, trying catching more fish and then checking back with him.
- Fishing Data – Bought from Clyde for 200 Fishing Points.
- Advanced Fishing Data – Bought from Clyde for 600 Fishing Points.
- Fantastic Fishing Data – Bought from Clyde for 1200 Fishing Points.
- Best Fishing Data – Reward for “A Gift for a Fishing Maniac“.
After catching all 25 fish, you can talk to Clyde and he’ll reward you with the Ocean Maid Nano Suit. If you try to claim this in NG+, you’ll first need to complete the side quest “Looking Glass” in the Great Desert before he’ll speak to you again.

Large fish #4 – Sailfish – Eidos 9, at the end
Large fish #5 – Pacific Bluefin Tuna – Wasteland, cave with best fishing data
ObsiEez says
Thanks for the info! I’ll test these spots out later to 100% confirm then add them to the guide!
Adam says
Jumbo fish #2 – Dunkleosteus, also Oasis, but very rare
Prize for all fish is Ocean Maid nano suit.
Good luck 🙂
ObsiEez says
Awesome! Thanks for all the information man. I’ll be testing all the spots you told me shortly & then adding them. I saw that we were missing the Ocean Maid one & as soon as I saw that I assume that’s what it was for. Glad I was right
John says
Caught the Dunk on the Oasis before Spire 4, and a lot of others that weren’t on the list as well
John says
The dunk was the first fish I caught when trying for the quest as well
Dylan says
I got a football fish in the clock tower pond. Its favourite bait is wriggling bait. Love the guide!
HONOKAPARA says
Got Dunkleosteus 3x in a row w/ Fantastic Bait before going to Spire 4. Oasis location.
ObsiEez says
Thanks for the information! I’ll remove this from the guide. Only added it simply because I spent like 30 minutes there with the fantastic bait & never caught it, only to catch it first try after Spire 4
Jay says
Is the Arowana really found in Oasis. I only catch the Pirarucu. If it isn’t there, is there any other locations besides Eidos 9 for the Arowana?
Jay says
After several hours, I was able to catch it at the Oasis.
Dan says
Caught two Pirarucu (gigantic nr2) in Great Desert – Oasis with special bait
Dylan says
I caught a dunkleosteus in oasis and I have not yet unlocked spire 4
Stellanon says
Hey I’m on main quest Abyss Levoire and I can’t catch the last missing fish Dunkleosteus in the Oasis I already got 29 whale shark but 0 other I am really unlucky or is it locked behind story progress ? Or is it in another location?
Stellanon says
Disregard my comment dear guide writer, after complaining I got it in the second try 31 to 1
Brendan says
I was able to find the Ocean Sunfish at Eidos 7 Clocktower after being unsuccessful in finding it at the Wasteland fishing locations.
Caught the Dunk in Oasis on my 2nd try with fantastic bait.
Also, big tip I learned from reddit. After you cast, if the fish you’re after is of rarity 2 or higher the exclamation points will pop up when it bites the hook. If you don’t hook it you won’t lose bait. So you should just cast and wait for the exclamation points if you’re after a fish with more stars/rarity.
Caught 2 Great White Sharks at Oasis in 10 minutes by just waiting for the !!! after casting with Special Bait.
Only fish this wasn’t helpful for was the Ocean Sunfish since it’s level 1 rarity so no exclamation points pop up. So it could be a Goldfish or a Sunfish and you won’t know till you hook and reel. Though you know not to hook if looking for a lower level fish and you see the exclamation points.
Joe says
I just caught an Ocean Sunfish there, as well as a Sea Bass, canned fish, and strange box.
I just want my halibut, but I’m okay filling out my fish while I try ig
Fukthe sunfish says
I’m beginning to think the ocean sunfish is a friggin myth and everyone is in on it except for me. After hrs of fishing for this elusive bastard I’m fish rich. At this point I’d trade the 19 fish that I have cought for just the ocean sunfish as it’s taking 2-3 times longer to catch it than it had the other 19 combined
Jason says
You can fish in the lake, just inside the starting gate at eidos 7 where you land.
Only made one attempt and caught a Porcupinefish, so not sure the full list.
Randy says
Porcupinefish Great Desert
GuyMont says
I caught a Porcupinefish in Xion too.
Joe S says
Football Fish @ Xion – Path To Wasteland, caught it twice now
Kevin says
At the Wasteland – SE lake, I’ve also caught:
Footballfish
Mackerel
Sea Bass (I think)
Sailfish
Pacific Bluefin Tuna
I have the Best Fishing Data.
Aichi says
It’s also possible to get a pirarucu from the oasis location in great desert
