No Man’s Sky – 10 Tips & Tricks to Get You Started

August 9, 2016 by PowerPyx Leave a Comment

1. Don’t Let your Multi-Tool Overheat

This tip will let you mine twice as fast: let go of the R2-button just before your multi-tool overheats. Then it will cool down instantly! You can press R2 immediately again and keep mining.

2. Every discovery is worth money!

Everything you discover can be uploaded (and renamed). Doing so gives you some quick extra cash. Perfect to get things going in the early game.

3. Keep Stacks of Plutonim, Heridium, Zinc, Thamium (needed to craft warp cells)

These 4 elements are needed to craft fuel for your spaceship. Plutonium is the most useful and most needed element as it powers most of your spaceship and multi-tool.

You use Plutonium to craft Electron Vapour. Heridium and Zinc for Antimatter. And Thamium for Fuel Cells.

4. Need some quick cash? Destroy asteroids and sell the elements in space station.

There are always tons of asteroids near space stations. All very close together and they give you lots of resources quickly (mostly Thamium). While Thamium isn’t particularly expensive, the fact that you get so much of it so quickly makes it ideal for a quick cash grab. And you don’t have to wander too far off. Just sell everything in your inventory and then fill it up with Thamium. Rinse and repeat.

5. Inventory full? Send something to your ship!

Oh that nasty “inventory full” warning! Why not open your inventory and send something to your ship? Hold the triangle-button on any element to transfer it from your exosuit to your ship (and vice versa).

6. Inventory full again? Craft your elements into Fuel and put it in the Hyperdrive.

Crafting your stuff into fuel is always a good idea. It sells for a higher price and also saves inventory slots. Your hyperdrive can hold multiple fuel cells (with patch 1.03 and above). Craft everything into fuel cells. If you don’t want to sell them, put them in the hyperdrive instead. They allow you to travel from solar system to solar system.

7. The Alien on that Space Stations wants 20 Carbon? Just harvest the plants.

Okay we get it, Aliens have to eat too (carbon, huh?). When talking to Aliens they will often ask you for carbon (or rather it’s mandatory to talk to them multiple times in a row). Luckily, there are always some plants in space stations. Walk up to them and hold the square-button to harvest ~10 carbon per plant.

8. Recharge Hazard Protection for free

Tired of spending all your iron on recharging the Exosuit’s environmental shielding? Just stay near your ship. Because entering your ship will automatically refill the protection in a matter of seconds. It will also refill in buildings (e.g. alien outposts) and when leaving a planet. So don’t waste your iron refilling it when you are about to leave the planet anyway.

9. Use Black Holes to get to the center of the galaxy quickly!

Black holes are a great way to reach the center quicker. They will teleport you ~2000 lightyears closer to the center. They are cosmic shortcuts. When you see one nearby, use it! They are relatively rare, though. And using them can break some of your equipment (which can be repaired easily). Well look at that, there’s one right here:

10. Always visit Atlas Stations when they are nearby

Atlas Stations are much rarer than normal stars. But they are worth it. They will give you Atlas Stones (which are worth ~75,000 units) and you will learn 5+ new alien words by collecting the “word bubbles” inside. They can also unlock the Atlaspass V1 for you – an important keycard that gives you access to new areas of space stations. Atlas Stations are marked in blue on your star map. Here’s a picture of one:

And that’s it! Safe travels on your journey to the center. Got a tip of your own to share? Let’s hear it in the comments below.
