The Protector in Pokemon Sword & Shield is used to evolve Rhydon to Rhyperior. This guide shows where to find the Protector Location in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
Protector Location #1:
- You find “Protector” in Route 9 (Circhester Bay) on a small sandy island in the water. It’s inside a red Pokeball item pickup. See the item circled red in the image below.
Protector Location #2:
- You can buy the Protector item from the Pokemon Center in the middle of Hammerlocke. There’s a girl next to the Pokemart counter that sells it for 10BP. You must first get 10 BP (Battlepoints) by fighting in the Battle Tower.
Protector Location #3:
If you’re lucky, the merchant in Stow-on-Side will sell it (the one that changes his wares daily). You can also ask him what he’ll sell the next day, or if you missed one of his bargain you can buy the previous day’s bargain for an increased price. This is random however, and he changes his inventory daily.
Protector Usage:
The only use of Protector is to evolve Rhydon to Rhyperior. You must give Rhydon this item and then trade it to another player (locally or via internet) to trigger the evolution. It’s one of the more secret evolutions in the game.

I’m at Stow-on-Side and there is a guy in the street market who tells me if I click on the ‘next bargain’ dialogue “I’m going to get a Protector…” I imagine I’ll be able to get the item tomorrow. I imagine this guy changes his items based on what day it is during the week but I’m not sure.
