Sekiro Shadows Die Twice All Gourd Seed Locations

March 21, 2019 by PowerPyx 21 Comments

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice contains 9 Gourd Seeds. This guide shows all Gourd Seed Locations. A Gourd Seed can be used to upgrade your healing Gourd, thus giving you more healing charges (similar to Health Flasks in previous games). Fully upgrading it unlocks the Ultimate Healing Gourd trophy or achievement. This is also very helpful to last longer in boss fights so grab these as soon as possible.

After finding a Seed bring it back to Emma at the Dilapidated Temple. She will then upgrade the Healing Gourd for you. Later in the game, after Ashina Castle, Emma will disappear from the Dilapidated Temple and reappear in Kuro’s Room. To unlock her there, beat the main boss at the top of the tower in Ashina Castle, then talk to the Divine Heir 5 times in a row and follow the smoke signals across the tower roofs to find Isshin. After talking to Isshin, you unlock Emma in Kuro’s Room.

You can still return to all areas later on, however the enemy spawns change later in the game so any collectibles tied to a specific enemy could potentially be missable. The final Gourd Seed is also missable as it’s depending on what ending you choose. This guide lists them in chronological order. Some are found in the world and some are dropped by certain enemies.

Ashina Outskirts

Gourd Seed #1: Outskirts Wall – Gate Path
Immediately after the idol (checkpoint) “Outskirts Wall – Gate Path” you will encounter a miniboss called “General Naomori Kawarada”. Defeat him and he’ll drop the first Gourd Seed. Make sure you start with a stealth takedown (jump across roofs on the left and sneak up from behind). This takes away one of his lives. Then just block and attack to break his Guard a second time.

Gourd Seed #2: Outskirts Wall – Stairway
This is in the building immediately after the Chained Ogre miniboss (just before General Tenzen Yamauchi miniboss).

Gourd Seed #3: Ashina Castle Gate
After defeating the main boss Gyoubu Oniwa (guy on horse), go across the battleground where the fight took place and up the stairs. Instead of heading inside the building here, you must walk around the left and go up another set of stairs. There you find a small tent with a merchant inside. He sells this Gourd Seed for 1000 money. You can farm it from nearby enemies and come back.

Hirata Estate

No Gourd Seeds in this area!

Ashina Castle

Gourd Seed #4: Ashina Castle
From the very first idol you reach in this region called “Ashina Castle”, head to the right and jump across the roofs. Watch out for some smoke signals on the roofs, they are showing the way. You must reach the main tower (tallest building on the map). When you enter the tower you come to the idol “Upper Tower – Antechamber”. In this small chamber is a treasure chest, inside it is the Gourd Seed. It’s just a few steps before the idol.

Gourd Seed #5: Ashina Castle
Backtrack to the first idol of this region, the one called “Ashina Castle”. From here head upstairs where the 4 riflemen stand on the stairs. Run past them to the very top of the stairs and take a sharp right turn, then drop down. Here in a tight alley behind a wall sits a man. He asks you to kill all enemies in the area. Do this for him, then talk to him again. He’ll give you some info and promise your paths will cross again. Later he will spawn at the Dilapidated Temple just left of the idol there (sitting against a wall by a torch, he can be hard to see). He will sell you a Gourd Seed for 2000 coins.

Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo

Gourd Seed #6: Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo
From the first idol in this region, follow the trail where the monks are walking around. It will lead you upstairs to a temple with seemingly no way to go forward, but you can actually grapple on to the wooden beams above and jump through a hole in the ceiling. Up there you’re going to pass by a ritual room with 3 monks praying. The Gourd Seed is here. This is actually the default story path, you’re going to come through this room no matter what. At this point in the game Emma might no longer be at the Dilapidated Temple. She’s now found at “Upper Tower – Koro’s Room”, after talking to the Divine Heir several times he tasks you with following smoke signals across the tower roofs. Follow the smoke signals to find an old man called Isshin. Talking to him makes Emma available in Kuro’s Room.

Sunken Valley

Gourd Seed #7: Under-Shrine Valley
From this idol, jump downhill and grapple on to a ledge where a single rifleman stands. After the rifleman take a left turn, grapple on to the tree branch above. Grapple to a 2nd branch in front of you (1 rifleman here) and then jump up the wall to your immediate left. Now there are 2 rifleman on different platforms. Climb to the very top. There you find two item pickups under a small roof, one of them is the Gourd Seed.

Ashina Depths

Gourd Seed #8: Mibu Village
From the Mibu Village idol, walk inside the village and you’ll find this under a big tree with white leaves where lots of enemies are gathered. The tree easily stands out, it’s the only one with leaves whereas all other trees are dead.

Fountainhead Palace

Gourd Seed #9: Palace Grounds
This is missable! First you must unlock a missable story area called the Fountainhead Palace. After defeating the Corrupted Monk main boss in Ashina Depths and the Guardian Ape main boss in Sunken Valley, you must return to Ashina Castle. The idols in that area will be locked so you have to get back there via the Abandoned Dungeon. On the Tower Rooftop where you fought Genichiro Ashina, you must talk to Owl. There you get to choose the game ending. To reach Fountainhead Palace pick the 2nd dialogue option “Break the Iron Code, stay Loyal to Kuro”. Defeat the main boss and talk to Kuro in his room until all dialogues are exhausted. Then you must travel to the Wedding Cave Door idol in Ashina Depths. There in the cave where you picked up a story item, you must enter a tent to be transported to Fountainhead Palace. Advance through the area until you reach the Palace Grounds idol, it’s on the main path and unmissable. From the Palace Grounds idol, enter the next building where some squid-like enemies are crawling around. There’s a big red chest before opening the next door, it’s on the main path and easy to see. Open it for the last Gourd Seed.

That’s all 9 Gourd Seeds in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice. After finding them all, remember to return to Emma at Kuro’s Room (in Ashina Castle) and give her the Seeds to unlock the Ultimate Healing Gourd trophy or achievement.

There is in fact a Gourd Seed in Hirata Estate, it’s behind a trick wall and inside of a chest, before you get to the Idol before Lady Butterfly.

I have to leave my email so I can send you a video of where it’s located if you’d like.

I know of a trick wall there but the chest contains a Prayer Bead, not Gourd Seed. Are you sure it was Gourd Seed for you? There could be multiple trick walls there. The one I got is at the idol before Lady Butterfly. On the left side of that building at end of a corridor where 2 guards patrol lean against the wall that has a little banner hanging on it. Behind this is the chest and 3 other item pickups, but it’s a Prayer Bead you get from it.

The first purple Corrupted Monk in Ashina Depths doesn’t give a trophy. You need to beat the real Corrupted Monk after story for it.
I’m currently at 8 Gourd Seeds, will confirm the total asap.

9th seed is next to the building in chest in Foutainhead Palace next to Palace Grounds Idol

Ok, got all Seeds now and the trophy. Can confirm 9 Seeds total and you start with 1 healing charge by default. That means you can get 10 Gourd uses maximum (only 9 Seeds to find).
Be sure you go to Emma and give her the seeds to unlock the trophy. Just finding them isn’t enough. After the 9th Gourd Seed she’s in Kuro’s Room (Ashina Castle).

Hold on, so if there are total of 9 + 1 (the one you start with), is that then, you have 10 potions ultimately?

There’s also one you can buy from the merchant who sets shop near the dilapidated temple, for 2000 sen. Does that one not count ? I already bought it and have 10, and I haven’t picked up the one at fountainhead palace yet. So am I going to go to 11 now or is it capped at 10 ?
