Far Cry 6 lets you invite a friend to play the story in online Co-Op. You can also play Special Operations together. Far Cry 6 also supports crossplay between PS4 and PS5 versions, meaning one player can use the PS4 version and the other the PS5 version. However, there is no offline splitscreen co-op (online only).
To invite a friend: Go to Title Screen or Pause Menu (press Options-Button on PS4 / Menu Button on Xbox) > Click the friends icon in the top right corner > click “Play with a Friend”. Alternatively, you can also “Search for a Partner” to have a random player join your game (only available in story, not title screen), or “Be a Partner” to join someone else’s game.
Co-Op Unlock Requirement: Co-Op is only available after finishing the Main Mission DU or Die on the prologue island “Isla Santuario”, which takes about 1-2 hours of playtime! Co-Op is not unlocked from the beginning.
There is also co-op for the online mode “Special Operations”. These are extra maps with different objectives, such as stealing batteries from enemy camps and extracting them from the mission area. After your friend joined, the host can simply talk to the Spec Ops NPC at one of the main camps in Madrugada, Valle De Oro, El Este to start these missions. They are only available after finishing the prologue island “Isla Santuario” and having reached one of the 3 main camps. When the host initiates a Spec Ops mission, the friend that joined will get a popup in the top right corner of the screen to accept it.
When joining someone for the story mode, be aware that story-related trophies & achievements can only be unlocked by the host, not by the joining player (everything that says Solo Campaign Only in the description can be unlocked in co-op but only by the host). It will load the game world & mission progress of the host’s save. The progress of the joining player does not matter. Even if your friend is much further in the game you can join and play together. The only progress that gets saved for the joining player is buffs, upgraded items, gathered items, purchased items, ammo, gadget ammo, Guerrilla Experience, and Camp Resources. Story & Quest Progress does not save for the joining player.

Can you download the the game on a PS4 and ps5 and play coop with the same PSN ID on both consoles to get the coop trophy?

Yes you can as long as you are host, 2nd player (joining player) not earn trophies or achievements while being as 2nd player. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I know this might sound like a stupid question… but I guess your friend needs to have the game as well? if no friends have far cry 6 can you just play with unknown people on-line?
