In Assassin’s Creed Shadows you can play as two characters: Naoe (female Assassin) and Yasuke (male Samurai). The prologue introduces you to both characters. After you reach the open world you can only play as Naoe initially.
To unlock Yasuke finish Act 1 of the story. Then he can be used for open world exploration. Finishing Act 1 takes around 5-8 hours if you focus on only the story.
After this you can switch characters by scrolling over a fast travel point, or from the inventory by holding Square-Button (PS5) / X-Button (Xbox).
Good to know: the following two collectible types can only be collected as Yasuke.
Yasuke has stronger combat stats but lacks the stealth and maneuverability from Naoe.
