Final Fantasy 7 (VII) Remake has 60 Manuscript Locations. The Manuscripts earn you 10 SP each which is used to upgrade your weapon level and unlock new skills.
Weapon Level 6 is the maximum. To see your weapon level, open the Pause Menu > Upgrade Weapons and it will show the Weapon Level for each character and how many SP you need to the next level. The Weapon Level affects how many Sub-Cores you have available to choose weapon skills from (Pause Menu > Upgrade Weapons > Select a Weapon). A higher weapon level lets you select new skills, for example additional Materia slots or “Reprieve” which makes you survive deathblows with 1HP. These higher-level skills can be very helpful on hard difficulty. Weapon Level 6 requires 250 SP but on the first playthrough you can only get 246/250 SP at most, meaning you must play hard difficulty and get one more Manuscript per Character to get to Weapon Level 6. After this the additional SP are used to buy more upgrades for each weapon.
The vast majority of Manuscripts is only obtainable on hard difficulty, which unlocks after beating the game for the first time. After your first playthrough you unlock Chapter Select and it shows how many Manuscripts you got left in each Chapter (Pause Menu > System > Chapter Selection > check book icon on each Chapter). You can also check your collected Manuscripts under Pause Menu > Inventory > Manuscripts.
Simply put: All Manuscripts are automatic rewards from defeating all bosses on hard and doing all side quests on hard. A few are from doing the Colosseum Challenges (Chapter 9 & 14), Combat Simulator Challenges (Chapter 16) and some are bought from the Moogle Merchant in Chapter 8. One Manuscript replaces the Chocobo & Moogle summoning Materia in Chapter 6 (the only ‘collectable’ one, everything else is a reward and not picked up anywhere). Just do all of this and you’ll get all Manuscripts without going out of your way.

Sidenote, the Volume III tomes can all be gotten from their listed quests regardless of your difficulty setting.
SwaneeDK says
Hi Powerpyx,
Thank you, Great job as always. I have a concern though.
Number 24, regarding Artith’s second Telluric volume. Aerith is not in the party at that time and the game didn’t gave me the chance to fight that one.
I have all others related on a first run, not this one. Do you think I missed something ? (I did all possible at the time in chapter 9 too, as as you said, only time we have Aerith available for Colosseum.
PowerPyx says
That one’s actually Chapter 9 (moved #47 to #24). After the Colosseum Objective, turn around immediately and go back down to the Colosseum. This is the only time Aerith is still in your party to play the Colosseum (if you go ahead where she changes her dress you can’t go back). During Chapter 14 it’s actually not doable (only Cloud / Tifa / Barret in that chapter), only in Chapter 9 it works.
SwaneeDK says
Hi again,
Thank you for the reply ; on my first run I farmed both level 50 and materias in chapter 9 with Aerith and Cloud. Only 3 choices at the time.
Now I’m replaying chapter 9 and there are lot choices available, incuding the one I’m looking for.
Thanks again.
ENni says
i dont understand the number 8
PowerPyx says
It’s where you find Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia on first playthrough. Just go back there and it’ll have been replaced by a Manuscript (on Hard).
Cdog says
I actually didn’t get the summon on my first playthrough, so just to confirm for anyone else worried:
If you play on hard (and didn’t take the summon yet) the summon will be there and when you turn around you will look straight at a chest with the manuscript. So you can get them both on hard
Alessandro says
Are you sure Shinra combat simulator hard mode is in chapter 17? Or is in chapter 16?
PowerPyx says
Chapter 17.
There are two simulators (one in Chapter 16 you visit during story, one in Chapter 17 in room after the first enemy encounter where you meet Chadley). The one in Chapter 17 is only available via Chapter Select after story.
Mr Burns says
Is this required for a trophy?
PowerPyx says
No.
You don’t need any of these Manuscripts for any trophy. They are just optional to unlock more Weapon Upgrades.
Eric says
I noticed you said, “All Manuscripts are automatic rewards from defeating all bosses on hard and doing all side quests on hard.” I already ran through the game I believe getting all the manuscripts available and doing all the sidequests available that you could get in first playthrough. does that mean I have to do all the side quests again?
PowerPyx says
If you want the Manuscripts you’d need to redo them on hard, yes. But they are entirely optional. If you are just interested in the platinum trophy you can skip them as they are not tied to any trophies.
All they do is give you upgrade points, but even with just the bare minimum from bosses you can buy all of the best skills and shouldn’t have any trouble with bosses.
Anthony says
So I have 56/56 manuscripts, completed the game on Hard and I’m still missing some sub cores for some weapons. Anyone know if I’m somehow missing something?
larry says
some wep have less core, usually starter wep have 6
Luke says
Are the manuscripts saved immediately once collected or do you need to finish the chapter. Mainly thinking of the two Hard runs of Chapter 9 required here.
Thanks for the list btw.
larry says
yes once u get the manuscript save (to be sure) and then u can change chp
Nanaki says
Apparently… we have to fight the Hell House in Hard mode… TWICE. Is so fucking annoying.
7 Tempo says
You do NOT need to finish the chapter. Tested it myself. As soon as you have the manuscript, it is saved. You can then change chapter if you want. I had to switch to Ch. 14 right before the end of Ch. 9 because I did 0 side quests in both Ch. 3 and Ch. 9 in my third run to get the Barret resolution scene in Ch. 14. But I forgot to go for that first and went back to Ch. 9 (the fourth time) to get Aerith’s remaining 3 manuscripts instead. I was ready to smash the PlayStation lol
Duk Tape says
Just defeated Roche on Hard, with just enough life to say I’m breathing. Still did not get the Swordplay Vol. VI.
What am I missing??
PowerPyx says
It’s for the 2nd Roche Encounter (not the Bike chase). When you defeat him in the duel in Chapter 4 you get it (must play on hard difficulty).
Duk Tape says
Thanks. Hey, maybe you’ll post that tidbit in the list — might save you time in answering it for someone else ;)
Great Walkthrough…it’s helped me out a lot.
Plutters says
Does collecting all the Manuscripts enable you to fully upgrade all the weapons? Is that even possible?
turt says
The in-game stats says 56/56, why did you wrote 60 manuscripts?
Craig Hitt says
It only lists 56 in game because there are 14 basic manuscripts for each character (14×4=56.) The other 4 are the “Legendary” ones for the 2nd level limit breaks. The 56 listed increase SP, the legendaries unlock moves.
Kit says
If I’m going for the platinum, and I finished chapter without doing the sidequests so I can get the dress like in the guide, can I go back a chapter and get the manuscript for Tifa? Or if I interrupt the hard mode playthrough to go back a chapter without saving, do I forfeit the hard mode trophy?
sheikh1989 says
I beat all of the Shinra simulator matches but I din’t get any manuscripts. And I can’t do the Aerith one considering she’s not in the the party at that point.
HiChuu says
I’m assuming you’re missing Aerith’s Corneo Coliseum battles. You’ll need to do the Corneo’s battles right after you’ve finished Hell House, since it’s the only time Aerith is available for those battles I think.
Puffy says
Hi, Just a thought. Can you choose easy mode and play before the boss and then change it to hard. Does this count?
Yoon Oh says
nope. the game only lets you switch mid chapter between classic, easy, and normal. hard mode must be enable at the start of chapter select and you cannot switch out of it without restarting the chapter
