Starting Location: Echoes of Silenced Bells

Meet with Anca at the Old Inn

After you parted company in Laslea Glen, Anca set off for the inn near St. Tyna’s convent. She will meet up with you here and tell you a little more about her history with the convent and why she left. Fog has since descended on the area, shrouding it in mystery.

Make Your Way Through the Fog (1 Time Segment)

Follow Anca as she takes you deeper into the fog, and tells you about what it was like during the plague. Along the way you will discover some abandoned carts, and when you examine them Anca tells you about pilgrims fleeing the plague abandoning them by the roadside. Shortly after that you’ll see a campfire burning with a dead Brencis soldier lying next to it.

Investigate the body (Optional)

Look at the body and you’ll see that he has been attacked.

A little way further down the road, you’ll pick up the scent of rotting bodies and see a wounded man trying to crawl away despite leaving a massive blood trail. Suddenly Anca hears music, voices singing in latin and she thinks that perhaps they did not perish in the plague after all. Opening the gates triggers the first time segment to be spent.

Open the convent gates

You will enter the tunnel, and at the end Anca will rush forward and wait for you to open the door for her like a gentleman should. Once inside, you immediately spot a clearly undead nun picking invisible fruit off a dead tree. Anca calls out to her anyway, blinded by hope, and screams when the nun turns against you!

Defeat the dead nun

Cut down the nun as quickly as possible, and once she falls down Anca will examine the body, spiraling a little at seeing the fate of her former sisters.

Investigate the dead nun

Examine her hands and face, when suddenly the nun starts moving again. This takes Coen a little by surprise.

Anca wastes no time in making your day worse by pointing out the others that are busting through the gate to welcome you. Anca leads you into a building and you manage to bust in and bar the door behind you.

Follow Anca through the refectory building

Now trapped inside, you have to find a way through the refectory to the library. Coen takes the time to get more answers out of Anca about her expulsion and what the hell is going on. She tells you the story of how she trusted a friend with the knowledge of the forbidden texts and that person had turned her in to the mother superior. She worries that her attempts to study the texts in the secret library are somehow responsible for what’s happening. She needs to learn more, and to do that you’ll have to escape from the refectory.

Before you follow her, instead search the side room on the ground floor, where you will find a monastery map to guide your search. With that secured, loot everything else you can before you follow her.

She will lead you upstairs to the study of the Prioress where you can get a birds eye view of the situation from her balcony. In order to reach the library, you will have to secure a safe passage through the nuns.  Look at all the points of interest to gain an optional objective for each one.

Once you’ve done that, exit the view and turn to the south to find a pathway down to the ground. Also, the cross behind the prioress’s desk acts as a shrine if you need to gain any perks.

Look for Keys

To access most of the locations in the monastery, you will need to find the keys. On the far side of the monastery, in the north corner will be a small wooden shack next to the chapel and against the wall. Open the door and you’ll find the key ring on the wall directly in front of you.

Check out the infirmary (Optional)

On the balcony Anca pointed out that the infirmary is joined to the library through an upper level corridor. You also see that there is smoke coming out of the chimney, meaning there’s someone still alive there. When you approach the building, you’ll hear the sound of voices inside.

Investigate the Sounds Coming From the Infirmary

The doors are all locked and can’t be opened by the monastery keys, but if you go to the back of the building you will see a window that you can interact with. A group of Brencis’s soldiers have holed up in the infirmary, on a mission to recover a relic for their lord and they can’t go back empty handed. They refuse to open the door until you agree to deliver to them St. Tyna’s necklace, then they give their word that you can access the upstairs passage to reach the library. Of course if Brencis wants it, it’s probably not something you want to hand over. This begins the side quest “Most Precious Thing“.

Completing the quest will allow you to enter the building, as the Brencis soldiers keep their word. There are two other ways to enter the Infirmary, the simplest being to find and retrieve St. Tyna’s necklace and then go back and tell the soldiers that you won’t hand it over. They open the doors to try and take it from you, letting you kill them. The other way is to use the bell tower to call the nuns to the Infirmary, causing them to rip the soldiers apart (see below). After that, call them to the chapel or dormitory to get them out of your way and you’ll be able to access the infirmary.

Check out the bell tower (Optional)

Attached to the chapel is the bell tower, and if you climb the steps and ring the bell not much will happen on its own. On the wall you’ll see a reminder posted about bell signals, telling you to read the instructions in the dormitory if you forget them.

Head to the dormitory at the western edge of the monastery.

Go inside, and on the floor straight ahead of you will be a book on the floor called Campana Loquitur, Vel Introductio Pro Novitiis (The Bell Speaks, or a Guide for Novices). Once you’ve read it, you’ll know the proper number of bell tolls to summon the nuns to various locations. You don’t have to remember it, since you will be prompted to pick a location and Coen will just pull the rope the corresponding number of times.

Back at the bell tower, you have three signal options: Dormitory, Church, or Infirmary. If you ring the Dormitory signal, all of the nuns will head to the west side of the courtyard, but they will not go inside. This doesn’t appear to have any purpose, as it does not allow Anca to pass safely.

Ringing the signal for the Church will cause all the nuns to leave the courtyard and file into the Church for prayers. This will allow Anca to pass to the library safely.

If you ring the signal for the Infirmary, the nuns will all pile into the Infirmary and rip the Brencis soldiers inside to shreds and causing your infamy to increase. In order to use the Infirmary to access the Library, you will have to then pull the rope a second time to move the nuns to either the Church or the Dormitory. Afterwards the way to the Infirmary will be safe enough for Anca to travel.

Check out the chapel (Optional, 1 Time Segment)

When examining the chapel from the balcony, Coen dryly quips that he wouldn’t be surprised to see St. Tyna up and about. Let’s hope not. Investigating the chapel and the Sacristy is detailed in the side quest “Most Precious Thing“.

Secure a Safe Passage to the Library for Anca (3 Time Segments)

Once you’ve cleared out the Infirmary of Brencis’s soldiers using the bell tower or St. Tyna’s medallion, or instead moved all the nuns into the Chapel so that Anca can access the Library directly, the 3 time segments will be spent and you can tell Anca the good news.

Return to Anca (1 Time Segment)

Head back to the Prioress’s Study and tell Anca that the way is clear. When you say “Let’s go to the library”, the 1 time segment will be spent and you will get a cinematic of Anca and Coen crossing the courtyard.

Follow Anca

Anca will go to the library and start to look at the books. There are a lot of shelves and piles of books to be looted, all of which have a chance to contain skill manuals so it’s in your best interest to loot everything. When you approach her, you’ll get a cinematic where you can talk to her about some very personal topics. She endorses your rampant looting, and then heads for a bookcase in a room to the west. Follow her when you’re done.

Push the Bookcase Out of the Way

Inspect the bookcase she’s looking at, and you’ll be prompted to press :r2: / :rt: to push the bookcase aside to reveal a hidden passage.

Someone has beaten you to the punch. The books you’re looking for have been carried into the catacombs by someone or something, and you have to go after them.

Search for the Forbidden Books in the Catacombs (1 Time Segment)

Head down the stairs and follow the passage. At the first T-junction, you’ll find a locked door which will only open after you’ve defeated the boss.

Follow the open path to the Northwest and you’ll run into an undead nun. Strangely though, this one will not return once defeated.

Keep progressing through the catacombs killing undead nuns until you find a table littered with witchcraft sigils and writings, all written in blood. Examine everything.

At the end of the passage you will find a staircase heading up to a large double door. Opening this door triggers the 1 time segment to be spent. In the next room, Anca discovers that one nun remains and is preparing a grisly ritual. It’s Leonica, Anca’s former friend and betrayer.

She rants for a while then suddenly attacks Anca with a spell that keeps her trapped in place. It’s up to Coen to stop her.

Defeat Leonica

She will begin with normal knife attacks, occasionally teleporting to get out of your range. She will then attack with one of two unblockable spells. The first is similar to Ravenous Flock and used when you’re at longer range. Dodge to the side to avoid this.

The second is a cloud of stakes in one of two forms. In the center of the room, she will use it as a cloud. Dodge back twice quickly to avoid being struck. When she is further away, it will be used as a barrage towards you. This you should dodge to either side to avoid.

Once you’ve pushed her below her first break point, she will teleport to the middle of the room, then disappear in a cloud. Moments later some of the many nuns on the ground in the room will reanimate and attack you. Critically, they take a few seconds to stand up but are still vulnerable to attack during this time. These nuns are more likely to do the “up attack” which is a claw frenzy that hits over and over as they run at you. If you fail to block this, you will be hit multiple times for a significant amount of damage.

+

Defeat them all, and Leonica will reappear in the center of the room, giving you a prime opportunity to counterattack as she appears. As you push her past her second break point, she will again disappear and reanimate additional nuns. There will be more this time, and spread through the room so they’ll have more room for charge attacks. Watch your back so that you’re not blindsided.

Finally, at the third break point, Leonica disappears and revives even more nuns. Not an imaginative attack, but effective. Keep killing nuns! Once they’re all dead, Leonica will reappear for the final battle. Keep up the pressure until she’s dead. You will have a moment while Anca reads her notes to loot the room. When you’re ready head back to Anca and talk to her.

Talk to Anca

Anca comes to a horrible realization that Leonica was attempting to break the curse that has affected the nuns, allowing them to rest. Anca says that she has to finish what Leonica started. Depending on how you feel about the potential insanity of Leonica and her true intentions, Coen can either choose to destroy her notes, or allow Anca to proceed. The choice will affect your relationship with Anca significantly, so choose carefully. If you let the decision timer run out, Coen will hand the notes back and allow her to continue. The ritual will require 1 time segment to complete, and it will cause all of the nuns to disappear.

In either case, she tells you that the next step is to gather all the texts they’ve found and head back to the inn to study them. If you spend 2 time segments now, you can automatically begin “Between the Words” and you will move directly to the inn, otherwise you can tell her that you’ll meet up with her later and she will go on ahead of you.

This finishes Echoes of Silenced Bells side quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
