Under Watchful Eyes is a side quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Under Watchful Eyes side mission.
- Starting Location: Briar Sloughs / Stoneward Post
- Quest Giver: Mert
- Requirement: Mert must survive in “The Firebrand“. Quest automatically begins when completing “The Firebrand” by speaking to Mert in the dungeon.
- Fail State: N/A
- Reward: 250XP
- Time Required: 3 Time Segments
- Quest Description: Mert was caught by the soldiers and taken to Stoneward Post for questioning. I need to speak to him, maybe help him get out of there… But it won’t be easy. The place is heavily guarded.
Objectives:

- Free Mert
- Escort Mert through the Stoneward Post’s main gate
Starting Location: Under Watchful Eyes
This is a sub-quest of “The Firebrand“. Quest automatically begins when completing “The Firebrand” by speaking to Mert in the dungeon (Mert must survive).
Get the Key to Mert’s Cell
If you’ve just come from speaking with Mert, when you climb the stairs Friedo will have his back to you, allowing you to grab the keys without his knowing.
Free Mert (3 Time Segments)
It won’t make much difference, as the guard in the room with Mert will immediately draw his sword when you unlock his door. So before you do that, if you’re starting this quest immediately after completing “The Firebrand” and you’ve chosen one of the options that requires you to leave your weapons at the gate, look in the back right corner of the room to find a Weathered Longsword. Stealing the sword will make the guard hostile, but if you steal it, then immediately go into your inventory and equip it, you’ll be able to put it on before combat “starts”. That will put you on a more even footing in the coming fight.
On the other hand if you’ve fought your way in, you’ve already dealt with this guard so go ahead and free Mert!
Escort Mert Through the Stoneward Post’s Main Gate
This objective title is incredibly misleading, making the end of this quest much easier than you’d think. On the north side of the overseer’s tower there is a lit alcove that has a door locked with the same prison key that opened Mert’s cell.
Go through this door, and you’ll find a second door locked with the same key that leads outside the walls, and you’re done. This shortcut eliminates most of the fighting you’ll have to do in this quest, and still counts as complete even though you didn’t go through the main gate.
