Starting Location: To Dust you Shan’t Return
Automatically starts when the DLC quest Silent Witnesses ends.
Inspect the recovered bodies
Head to objective “A” at the buildings west of the monastery. You must get into the barn, but it’s locked with a hard difficulty door. There will be a single guard in front of the barn. Make a save, then pickpocket the guard for the key, use it to open the door. If you’re caught reload the save.
Inside you find two bodies.
Missable Trophy/Achievement:
Stop Licking That! – You tasted flour… from the hair of a dead person.
For this you must inspect the younger body’s head > hair > taste the powder. If you pick “Back” instead of “Taste it” you will miss out on this.
Whether you examine the younger or older body first doesn’t matter. Exhaust all possible options and remember to taste the powder on the young body’s hair for the trophy. There will be multiple very hard skillchecks, but even if you fail them the objective always updates to Consult with Albich. The failed skillchecks can be discussed with Albich and he will give the correct solution.
Consult with Albich
Report back to Albich in the infirmary, exhaust all dialogues in any order to report what you learned.
Question the witness to the fire
Go to the south-west wing of the monastery and go upstairs to the monks’ living quarters.
You need to speak to monk Elijah, you can call him with L1/LB/ALT when near the monks, but he’s not there. Ask the other monks where Elijah is, one of them will tell you he’s in the cellar, which will update the map marker.
Enter the cellar from the kitchen. You find Elijah in the middle of the search area, in the large cellar room.
Get something to sober up / Give Elijah something to sober up
Elijah is very drunk and doesn’t want to speak to you. To sober up Elijah, you must go up to the kitchen and grab a Strong Broth, then give it to Elijah. Alternatively, if you happen to have a Hair o’ the Dog potion in your inventory this will work too.
You’d normally figure this out by talking to the Cellarius, if you win a skillcheck with him he lets you take the broth willingly. But you can also head straight to the kitchen and steal it.
Exhaust all dialogues with Elijah. Regardless of what you pick he gives you the info you want. The best options to gain reputation: “I understand, but I need to find out what happened” (Reputation+) > “What were you doing outside at night?” > Drinking Skillcheck: “Really just chance?” (Reputation+, confirmed to succeed at 22 Drinking Skill) > “Was anyone else there?” > “What did you do after the fire?” > “Do you know who they were?” > “Confirmed infection” (Reputation+) > “Flour in the hair” > “Scratches on the back” > “You acted like a hero”. He also gives you the Lost key.
Search the scene of the fire
Head to the “B” marker south-west of the monastery. Approach the objective from the north to enter the yard with the burned down barn.
There are 3 clues to examine:
#1 – Wine in the mud at the gate:
#2 – Torch in the water
#3 – Cloth and boot in front of burned barn.
#4 – Oil to the right of the shed
#5 – White flour in the storage shed (not needed for objective)
Find out how the bodies ended up in the shed
You must get to the locked off area directly east of the burned building. You can either lockpick the hard difficulty door, or climb the scaffold to the north to avoid lockpicking.
You need to examine some clues again. The objective marker disappears here, but the clues are all along the sewage canal heading east towards the Herbalist’s Hut:
#1 – Drag marks in the mud outside the barn door
#2 – Look at the sewage canal
#3 – Walk through the sewage, climb out the left side to examine a cart near roses
Now either climb up to the shed and drop down the other side, or lockpick the gate.
Before approaching the Herbalist’s hut, equip your best armor/weapon, and heal up with Merigold potions if you’re not at full health. A fight is about to start. Also feel free to make a save here.
Search the herbalist’s house
When you’ve got your fighting gear equipped, enter the Herbalist’s hut. This will trigger a cutscene. You learn that Zacharias and his bodyguard Denes have been forcing the herbalist to experiment on two sick people. That’s why one body had a hole drilled in his head, and they tried to cover up the fact their experiments killed two patients, so they forced the herbalist to make it look like they died in a fire. Zacharias was jealous of Albich and wanted to be the first to find a cure for the illness to gain glory for himself, and resorted to experimenting on ill people who died from his ‘treatment’.
While you overhear their conversation, Denes stabs the herbalist so nobody will ever learn the truth, but then you are spotted and a fight breaks out.
Kill Denes
Defeat Denes in the duel. If you take too much damage and start bleeding, you may want to reload the save to retry. You can also find bandages in the herbalist’s hut and in the infirmary if you’re bleeding.
Talk to the herbalist (Optional)
Talk to the herbalist in his hut. You can question him “First I need to ask you something” for some extra lines of dialogue that explain how Zacharias and Denes forced him. Then he will pass away from the stab wound.
Confront Zacharias
Return to Albich’s room in the infirmary. When you approach a cutscene automatically starts. But you’re too late, Zacharias has poisoned Albich.
After the cutscene you will talk to Zacharias. What you say here doesn’t matter whatsoever. Even if you try to lie about the relic or say you want to help Albich on your own, the dialogue always plays out the same way. Zacharias demands a trade: The relic and Wenceslas’s medical records in exchange for the antidote. You will always be required to get both of these no matter what.
This starts the final DLC quest The Time has Come.
