Shadow from the Past is a Side Quest in Horizon Forbidden West (HZFW). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Shadow from the Past side mission.

Requirement: None, locate the quest start in Barren Light
Reward: 1750 XP, 2 Skill Points
Mission Info: A Carja guard stands accused of murdering a fellow soldier. He insists it was in self-defense – though no evidence has been found to back his claim.

Starting Location: Barren Light
Go to the clearing
A prisoner is sentenced to death for killing his soldier friend Laruvik, who he claims was part of a group called “The Eclipse”. Conover claims he was attacked by Lavuvik and only killed him in self-defense after being jumped on with a knife. Aloy heads to the clearing where this took place to investigate his version of what happened.
Examine the Blood
Once you reach the clearing first investigate the blood on the ground.

Afterward use your focus (hold 
) and investigate the 3 points of interest marked by a purple glow.
Follow the tracks / Sneak past or kill the machines
Use 
to highlight the tracks with your focus and follow them. At one point you will have the choice to either kill the machines or sneak past them. There are only 3 Burrowers, easy to kill in one hit with Silent Strike stealth attacks.
Search for Tracks (Examine the Blood)
Past the 3 Burrowers is a broken asphalt street. At the very start of it is a dead machine. Interact with it. After killing the burrowers it can take half a minute for the objective to update before this can be interacted with. Also Scan the blood next to the machine, as usual and to highlight the tracks.
Follow the Trail of Blood
Starting from the dead machine follow the tracks over the bridge and investigate the lookout under the same bridge. There investigate the bandages. See the endpoint and bandages in images below.
Follow the Tracks / Enter the Cave
From the bandages again use and highlight the tracks with .
Keep following the tracks until you come to a wall. Climb the wall up into a cave, called “Straggler’s Shade”, see endpoint below.
Examine the Cave / Kill the Eclipse
In the cave you will find a group of Eclipse cultists. Kill all of them since they are plotting an attack on Barren Light. You can scan for them by holding which will outline them in yellow. Sometimes one or two of the enemies can also spawn outside the cave.
Search the Hideout for Rayad’s Corpse
Once you have killed all of them you will have to find Rayad’s corpse which is located in the outdoor section of this hideout. After leaving the cave, it’s at the very end of the outside area, see location below.
Return to Conover
Through the vision you will find out about the leader of the Eclipse which will be your target in the future. For now, however, Aloy grabs Rayad’s mask and must head back to Barren Light to prove Conover’s innocence. Talk to Conover the quest giver again to finish this.
This finishes Shadow from the Past Side Quest in Horizon 2: Forbidden West and unlocks the follow-up quest SHADOW IN THE WEST.
