In Crimson Desert the “steal” and “pickpocket” prompt is greyed out by default. You have to be wearing a Mask for the steal/pickpocket prompt to become available.
How to Get a Mask
You can either loot Masks from bandits around Hernand (random), or buy it from the Back Alley Shop south of Hernand Castle.
Then go into your Inventory and equip the Mask.
How to Steal
With the Mask equipped, the “Steal” prompt will now appear on any item that can be stolen, typically in people’s houses.
How to Pickpocket
To pickpocket people, walk into them and the “Pickpocket” prompt will briefly appear for 1-2 seconds, quickly press the shown button to steal the person’s pouch. Then quickly exit the red search area to not get caught.
Tip: NPCs is Castles and Manors tend to have higher quality loot, so focus on those.
Negative Consequences of Stealing
Stealing and Pickpocketing reduce your faction reputation by 5 points each time you do it. For this reason it’s generally not worth to go on big stealing sprees. The faction reputation can be traded for good armor/weapons at the faction vendors in each region. If you are caught, you get a loading screen where you are put into a jail cell and you will be stripped of the mask.
One workaround you can use is to make a manual save, pickpocket a bunch of NPCs in high value areas, if you don’t get anything worthwhile reload the save and retry on other NPCs until you get something worth the reputation loss.
Wearing a mask will also make some NPCs more cautious of your presence. Generally, it’s safer to not have a mask equipped unless you specifically want to steal something.
