There are 56 Fish / Aquatic Creatures Crimson Desert (including 5 Legendaries). Obtaining all Fish knowledge is required for the The Underwater Ecosystem challenge, which must be completed for the Natural Collector trophy & achievement.
Underwater Creatures are divided into 7 categories in the Knowledge menu under Creatures > Aquatic Creatures: Small Freshwater Fish, Medium Freshwater Fish, Large Freshwater Fish, Small Saltwater Fish, Medium Saltwater Fish, Large Saltwater Fish, Aquatic Creatures. The 5 Legendary Fish are also required, but are included in the Legendary Creatures knowledge category.
Before working specifically on Fish collection you should visit each Fishing Vendor. You can obtain a little over half of the fishing knowledge just by visiting each fishing vendor, as you automatically obtain the knowledge of the fish they sell. You can also send your recruits to expeditions at your Greymane camp (available after chapter 4), but this seems to have extremely low chance of pulling in fish that aren’t in the shop inventory at each location. You could let this run passively overnight and hope it catches new fish, which are automatically added to your knowledge menu when the expedition ends.
You can also speak to NPCs with a white dot on the minimap and sometimes receive fishing knowledge. This seems most common at fishing related areas (there are normally groups of fisherman around the Fishing Vendors) or locations like the Dewhaven Logging Camp.
“The Claw” is the best rod it the game and allows you to automatically reel in fish instead of manually spinning to reel. There are two ways you can obtain The Claw: either from the hidden vendor Patrigio, or by stealing it. Patrigio is a secret vendor who only appears along roads between 12AM – 4AM in-game time. One of the easiest spots to find him is along the road leading toward Hernand at Howling Hill, but he seems to be able to appear on most marked roads if you travel on them within the specified in-game times. He sells some harder to get items, but most notably if you reach 100 trust with him he gives you The Claw as a gift.
If you can’t find Patrigio or just want to steal the rod, then go to the location Bounty’s Nest located east of Vellua in southern Hernand. There is an NPC named “Item Fisher” who is using the rod. Scare him by attacking nearby or using your own fishing road which will make him drop The Claw, then you can steal it.
Challenges Overview:
All fish are listed in the order that they appear in the Knowledge menu. If fish knowledge can be obtained from a vendor then the vendor location is listed beside the fish, otherwise more information is given below each list.

Small Freshwater Fish:
- Piranha
- Small Brackbrow Bleak – Skoghorn Dock, southwestern Pailune / Odeck Pier, northern Pailune
- Small Minnow – Skoghorn Dock, southwestern Pailune / Odeck Pier, northern Pailune
- Small Spirlin – Skoghorn Dock, southwestern Pailune / Grey Rock Dock, northwestern Demeniss
- Small Gudgeon – The Witchwoods, central Hernand / Rodbel Fishing Dock, east of Hernand City
- Small Resbora – The Witchwoods, central Hernand / Rodbel Fishing Dock, east of Hernand City
- Pond Loach – The Witchwoods, central Hernand / Rodbel Fishing Dock, east of Hernand City
- Ricefish – Odeck Pier, northern Pailune / Grey Rock Dock, northwestern Demeniss
- Bass / Yellow Bass – The Witchwoods, central Hernand / Rodbel Fishing Dock, east of Hernand City
- Perch – Horseshoe Lake Perch, eastern Demeniss
- Tench – The Witchwoods, central Hernand / Rodbel Fishing Dock, east of Hernand City
- Leopard Perch – Grey Rock Dock, northwestern Demeniss
- Crucian Carp
Piranha knowledge can be obtained by speaking to a female human NPC at Dewhaven Logging Camp in the same manner as the Large Saltwater Fish listed below. The previous way to scan the Piranha that would stay on the ground at the Ancient Ruins is no longer a guaranteed way to find it as it seems to have disappeared after a patch.
Crucian Carp can be fished at the waterfall beside Claggy Chasm, west of Longbranch. This is also the location for the Giant Pond Loach.
Medium Freshwater Fish:
- Salmon
- Sockeye Salmon
- Northern Pike – Skoghorn Dock, southwestern Pailune / Odeck Pier, northern Pailune
- Trout
- Carp – Skallcove, northern Pailune (after completing faction quest)
- Catfish
- Lenok – Odeck Pier, northern Pailune
- Burbot – Grey Rock Dock, northwestern Demeniss / Horseshoe Lake Perch, eastern Demeniss
- Saw-Edged Perch – Silvermoon Tradehouse, Demeniss Port
- Freshwater Eel
Salmon and Sockeye Salmon can be found in the water west of Dewhaven Logging Camp, western Delesyia. On the shore where you can find the unmarked dock, go down the shore farther north between the two rock pillars. When casting, if you go too far out you’ll get a “No Fishing” warning on the top left and need to cast less far out. This is also the location for Paddlefish.
Trout can be found in the lake area directly south of the city of Demeniss. You can fish from Smuggler’s Dock or along the shore.
Catfish can be found in the RED RIVER around Bursada Temple Ruins in the southeast of the Crimson Desert. This is also the location for the Electric Eel.
Freshwater Eel can be found in the western part of Horseshoe Lake, east of the city of Demeniss.
Large Freshwater Fish:
- Electric Eel
- Giant Pond Loach
Electric Eel can be found in the same location as the Catfish.
Giant Pond Loach can be found in the same location as the Crucian Carp.
Saltwater Fish
Small Saltwater Fish:
- Red Tonguesole
- Mackerel – Port Delesyia, east of City of Delesyia
- Threeline Grunt
Red Tonguesole and Threeline Grunt can both be fished from the shoreline in Vellua, southern Hernand.
Medium Saltwater Fish:
- Blackhead Seabream – Vellua, southern Hernand / Stoneward Harbor, southern Delesyia
- Opaleye
- Barred Knifejaw – Stoneward Harbor, southern Delesyia
- Red Seabream – Vellua, southern Hernand
Opaleye can be found on the south coast of Demeniss, directly southeast of Thornbriar Fortress, at the bottom of the waterfall where the Abyss Cresset is located. This is also the location for the Crimson Opaleye.
Large Saltwater Fish:
- Striped Marlin
- Sturgeon
- Paddlefish
- Giant Red Seabream
- Sailfish
- Broadnose Sevengill Shark
- Crimson Opaleye
- Anglerfish
Most of the large saltwater fish are some of the rarest to obtain in the game, so speaking to NPCs at certain locations to try and obtain knowledge may be faster than actually fishing for them. Note for some of these you can use a boat and go farther out in the water, but it doesn’t seem to be specifically required. When you only need the large fish you can cast your rod directly beside you, then aim the camera downward to spot what fish are coming to your hook. If it isn’t one you think you need (it’s small) then cancel the cast instead of reeling the fish in.
Striped Marlin, Giant Red Seabream, and Broadnose Sevengill Shark can all be obtained as knowledge by speaking to NPCs around Delesyia, particularly Dewhaven Logging Camp. The trolls seem to give knowledge about the Shark, whereas regular humans can give knowledge about the Marlin and Seabream. The Shark seems to be the rarest overall fish to obtain for most people, so trying to farm it off the NPCs here can be faster. Go to the area, run around in a loop to find any NPCs with potential knowledge and speak to them a handful of times (they’ll typically either only repeat 1 line of dialogue or cycle through around 4 dialogues), then teleport to one of the fast travel points nearby and run back.
If you want to try fishing, then all three can be fished from the coast northeast of Marni’s Drilling Rig in Delesyia. If you want you can row a boat over from near the south tip of Delesyia, or stand on the rock in the water and then fish north. The Striped Marlin can also be caught in the same location as the Sailfish below.
Sturgeon is found on the south coast of Demeniss, south of the STEEL MOUNTAINS. You can stand on the small island where the Abyss Cresset is located and fish toward the west or south.
Paddlefish is found in the same location as the Salmon.
Sailfish is found on the east coast of Delesyia, in the ocean beside the port of Delesyia. You can stand on the edge of the round rocky area and fish out toward the ocean. Note this fish is colored very similar to the Marlin, which with a way bigger fin on top.
Crimson Opaleye can be found in the same location as the Opaleye if you are fishing, or seems to be rarely given knowledge by human NPCs around fishing locations in Hernand.
Anglerfish is found off the southeast coast of the Crimson Desert. There are a couple spots with rocks just below waterlevel where you can stand and fish toward the east. Make sure you don’t receive the “No Fishing” warning if you try and cast right beside yourself.
Others
Aquatic Creatures:
- Blue Whale
- Seahorse – Vellua, southern Hernand / Silvermoon Tradehouse, Demeniss Port
- Shrimp – Vellua, southern Hernand / Silvermoon Tradehouse, Demeniss Port
- Wharf Roach
- Crayfish
- Freshwater Crab
- Freshwater Clam
- Razor Clam
- Blue Crab
- Starfish
- Squid – Vellua, southern Hernand / Silvermoon Tradehouse, Demeniss Port
Blue Whale can be found by rowing a boat out to the map edge, then you will be knocked back into the map by it after the timer. This can be done by taking a rowboat from the beach near Valleu and rowing south (avoiding the mines) or taking the one that is found at the shore near Marni’s Masterium.
Wharf Roach, Blue Crab, and Starfish can be found along the beach southeast from the city of Delesyia. Note the Starfish needs to be the moving group to be picked up, not the single non-moving ones that can be found.
Crayfish, Freshwater Crab, and Freshwater Clam can be found along the river that runs between Hernand and Demeniss. They can appear farther up the banks in the rocks, not just right by the water.
Razor Clam can be rarely found along beaches in Delesyia or southern Demeniss if you can find the holes in the ground you pour salt into, but you are guaranteed to be pointed to some if you complete research at Dewhaven Keep in southern Delesyia, as one of the second level research projects is related to Razor Clams.
Legendary Fish:

Vasilios Timmothy Vermeulen says
The piranhas are not there. I drained it long ago, I cannot scan it. There is no fish? Where else can I go
Gage says
Are you 100% you went to the right location? I also drained it way earlier in my playtime but was still able to scan it as one of the last things I did.
Vasilios Timmothy Vermeulen says
Yes. To the place in the guide. I tried day and night. Crouching. Helmet on off. Loading in. Dying reloading. There is no fish… no red dot and I don’t have the knowledge entry. And I used the helm for butterflies. So I know it works.
But absolutely no red dot. I have a YouTube comment and Reddit chat also where people are trying to help me, I am not the only one at the moment. So I don’t know if this became missable with an update.
Vasilios Timmothy Vermeulen says
For anyone having trouble finding the piranha in the challenge area, it’s currently bugged.
There’s a workaround:
Go to Dewhaven Logging Camp and look for a lady in a blue dress with a gold scarf and white hat. She’s sitting at a desk by the trader during the morning. She appears as a stranger (I just called her Lizzy).
Keep reloading the area with companion spawn enabled until she shows up as a white dot, then talk to her. She will give you the piranha knowledge.
I spent around 12 hours trying everything online, and this was the only method that actually worked.
Big thanks to the people on YouTube and Reddit who helped figure this out.
