Search for Barney (night)
This quest needs to be completed at night, as you are going into a Forsaken Store, which have large numbers of infected inside during the day. Once at night head to the marked store and interact with the front door.
If you haven’t already activated the nearby “Larch” Windmill, a man will appear before you can enter the store and ask for your help activating it. Whether or not you choose to do this has no bearing on the rest of the quest, it’s just the game prompting you to activate the windmill, probably so that you have a nearby respawn point if you die inside the store.
Once you proceed inside the store you will still find a fair number of infected, though they are all asleep. Move counter-clockwise around the room, avoiding or dealing with them if you want.
This will possibly be your first time seeing the crystal search spots, where you break them open and obtain Crystal Cores which are sold to merchants for money.
Make your way to the room in the corner where you find a body you can interact with.
It’s not Barney, so you can use Survivor’s Sense to spot some tracks leading out of the room and to the upper floor.
Clear the area of infected
Upstairs there will be one infected banging against the door in the corner, who you need to deal with first before being able to speak with Barney.
Talk to Barney
Interact with the door to try talking to Barney, who doesn’t feel like coming out. Respond to him however you want.
Clear the area of infected
A bunch more infected will appear upstairs for you to deal with before you can talk to Barney again.
Talk to Barney
Interact with the door again and Barney finally opens up, letting you in to talk. He tells you about Birdie who lead the infected off and wants you to go check on him. Your response to Barney doesn’t matter, you’ll end up going to search for Birdie anyway.
Follow Birdie’s trail
Drop down to the lower floor and interact with the bloody handprint beside the door, which then lets you go out this side door.
Use your Survivor’s Sense and you can spot a trail of footprints leading into the nearby building.
Climb up to the top floor using the broken sections of walls, then you can find Birdie in the wall with the green light showing between the small opening in the doorway.
Contact Barney
Aiden then automatically tries to contact Barney, and you can leave the area. If you haven’t already grabbed it, there is a GRE crate located out the other end of the room you found Birdie in.
Return to Sophie
After talking on the radio with Sophie, you can go back to the Bazaar to meet back up with her. Go over to the shed where you spot to here originally where you can find Barney, then head inside to find Sophie speaking with Carl. Interact with Hermann, then you’ll have a conversation with Sophie and complete this story quest.
