Ghost of Tsushima The Iron Hook Walkthrough

July 16, 2020 by Jack McBastard Leave a Comment

The Iron Hook is a main tale in Ghost of Tsushima. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Iron Hook Main Quest.

The Iron Hook is unlocked when you’ve completed The Tale of Sensei Ishikawa, The Tale of Ryuzo, The Tale of Lady Masako, and Hammer and Forge.

Main/Side Tale:  The Iron Hook
Act:
 1 – Rescue Lord Shimura
Region:
 Izuhara
Quest Giver: –
Requirement: Completed The Tale of Sensei Ishikawa, The Tale of Ryuzo, The Tale of Lady Masako, and Hammer and Forge.
Rewards: Major Legend Increase, Grapple Hook
Mission Info: I almost have everything I need to save my uncle from Castle Kaneda. Sensei Ishikawa, Lady Masako, and Ryuzo’s Straw Hats are poised for the rescue mission. All I need is a tool to scale the castle walls, and Taka is hard at work on the task. I should check on Yuna in the town of Komatsu Forge.

Objectives:

  • Find Yuna in Komatsu Forge
  • Speak with Yuna
  • Travel with Yuna to the forge
  • Speak with Taka
  • Speak with Ryuzo
  • Travel with Ryuzo
  • Meet up with the Straw Hats
  • Speak with Ryuzo
  • Travel to Fort Yatate with the Straw Hats
  • Reach the cliffside
  • Grapple up the cliffside
  • Free the Straw Hat prisoners
  • Defeat the Mongols
  • Signal Ryuzo
  • Open the inner gates of Fort Yatate
  • Defeat the Mongols

Starting Location: The Iron Hook

Find Yuna in Komatsu Forge

Follow the waypoint to locate Yuna in Komatsu Forge.

Speak with Yuna

Sounds like Taka is done with his little project.

Travel with Yuna to the forge

Follow Yuna to the forge, and you’ll arrive just in time.

Speak with Taka

Well that’s going to be useful. Right after you finish your conversation, you’ll hear Ryuzo calling for you outside.

Speak with Ryuzo

Looks like the Mongols have captured all of Ryuzo’s best men (of course, how could they be the best if they all got captured?) and he needs your help to rescue them from Fort Yatate.

Travel with Ryuzo

Follow Ryuzo to a meeting with the remaining Straw Hats. Of course, since Ryuzo has a couple of free minutes he has to whine about that time you beat him in a tournament again.

Meet up with the Straw Hats

What? You’ve lost even more men? I’m starting to wonder if Ryuzo is even worth your trouble if he can’t keep a gang of bandits together.

Speak with Ryuzo

After talking with the Straw Hats, Ryuzo will fill you in on the “plan” on the ride to Fort Yatate.

Travel to Fort Yatate with the Straw Hats

Shockingly enough, Ryuzo’s plan has Jin doing all the heavy lifting. Remind me again what we need the Straw Hats for?

Reach the cliffside

When you reach the top of the hill, get off your horse and head to the waypoint.

Grapple up the cliffside

The waypoint will leave you facing a series of grapple points and platforms.

Run towards the edge of the cliff and press :r2: in mid-air when prompted to grapple to the branch. Just before you reach the end of your swing, press :x: to jump and land on the next clifftop.

Grapple and swing to the next clifftop, then turn to the right and look up to see a grapple point at the top of a wall. After grappling to the point, press  :l-up: to climb to the top of the cliff.

At the top of the cliff follow the path until you reach another gap. Run and jump off the edge towards the grapple point, and press :r2: in mid-air when prompted to grapple the trunk, then climb up.

Follow the path, and squeeze through the gap between rocks, then follow the path to the right to find a set of handholds leading upward.

At the top of the cliff, you’ll find another two grapple points to swing across.

Turn left at the corner and you’ll see a branch to grapple, then a cliff with a trunk to grapple at the top of a wall.

You’ll have to swing on the first grapple point, jump before the end of your swing and grapple again in mid-air. After grappling to the trunk, climb up to the top of the cliff.

After you climb up to the top of the cliff, you’ll see a series of ledges to climb up, leading to another pair of grapple points to swing across.

Almost there! There are an obvious series of handholds and grapple points leading up to the clifftop. Just run over to the waypoint and you can finally get to the meat of the mission.

Free the Straw Hat prisoners

From this point onward, your best bet is to approach this mission stealthily. Use Ronin Attire and charms that improve stealth or reduce detection speeds. From the waypoint, look to your left and swing across to the building next to you, then to the next building after that. If you use your Focused Hearing you’ll be able to see the captured Straw Hats with a white outline, and any Mongols patrolling in the area in red.

There are lots of grapple points and patches of pampas grass to use to avoid detection. If you have chain assassination (which you really should get if you don’t have it already) you’ll usually be able to take care of Mongols who patrol in pairs easily. The more enemies that you can eliminate stealthily now, the better.

Once you’ve eliminated the Mongols by the cages, open the first cage to free the first two Straw Hats. Just be sure to look at who’s in the cage before you open it (Of course you could also release the bear before freeing the prisoners, and let it thin out the Mongol ranks for you).

Right next to the first cage will be a circular path around a large rock that is patrolled by a single Mongol. If you use Focused Hearing, you’ll also see cages of prisoners on the other side of the rock. Drop down into one of the patches of pampas grass and eliminate the Mongol on patrol.

Be careful before approaching the cages. There are two Mongols standing guard on the other side of a log wall, with two more on patrol and a third wandering around on the other side of a tanning rack.

When the coast is clear, open up the last two cages to complete the objective.

Defeat the Mongols

Mop up the remaining Mongols in the inner fort with the Straw Hats’ “help”.

Signal Ryuzo

Head to the waypoint and trigger the signal fireworks for Ryuzo to begin the attack.

Open the inner gates of Fort Yatate

Defeat the Mongols

Head through the inner gates to find Ryuzo and his men in the middle of a pitched battle. Hit the Mongols from behind, and you might be able to even assassinate a couple before they see you. Once they’re done for, so will the quest!

This finishes The Iron Hook quest in Ghost of Tsushima.
