Starting Location: The Legend of Tadayori

Sit to hear the Legend of Tadayori

Yamato has a new tale to tell, this time about the legendary armor of Tadayori that was supposed to make its wearer virtually invincible. Well Jin will be the judge of that. Yamato tells of a place known as the Violet Crown, somewhere in northern Azamo where Tadayori used to go to meditate.

Travel to northern Azamo

The search zone pops up in northern Azamo. When you see the violet chrysanthemums, you’re nearly there.

Follow the flowers to the Violet Crown

When you see the flowers, follow them to a mountain and you’ll find your waypoint way up top at the peak.

Investigate the top of the Violet Crown

Examine the incense, and the map that is in the container. You will find a map to Tadayori’s Rest. Which makes sense, I suppose.

Find the location shown on the map

You’re now given a treasure map, which you can open by swiping left on the touchpad.

The place where you need to go to find Tadayori’s Rest location is in the very north of the yellow search area on your world map (about 2 minutes away by horse). Leave Violet Crown and head north to the very edge of the search area (see image location below). On the world map the location is named “Houren’s Pasture” (open the world map and zoom in to see the name once it’s unfogged). When you arrive, there will be more purple flowers and Jin comments “More violet chrysanthemums. Tadayori’s Rest could be close”. You can see another mountain range here. When you get close, Jin says “The cliffs are too sheer to climb. There must be another way in”. And of course, there is another way in. At the foot of the mountain where the purple flowers are, you can find a lamp. To the left of the lamp is a hole in the wall you can crawl under. Do so and you will have successfully found Tadayori’s Rest. The map location and gap are both shown below.

Enter Tadayori’s Rest

After crawling through the tunnel, follow the flowers down the path, jumping across crevasses as they appear. Just before you reach the entrance, you’ll see some dead Mongols who also had a map to the location. This doesn’t bode well for your chances. When you’re ready to proceed, squeeze through the nearby crack in the wall.

Continue to follow the flowers until you get a new waypoint.

Investigate the cemetery

Go to the gravestones marked with the waypoint and there will be two gravestones and some incense to examine. Investigate all 3 of these (they are all next to each other, seen on 2nd screenshot below).

Do this and you will trigger a cinematic. Suddenly an unknown woman with a katana is accusing you of being a thief, and does not believe you when you tell her who you are. She attacks – triggering a Duel!

Defeat Kaede

Even though Jin pleads with her throughout the fight, she won’t stop until you defeat her in battle. She is quite fast with several combos that include unblockable attacks. Due to her speed, you can’t simply sidestep to avoid her combo and then counterattack. Usually her second slash in a combo is horizontal and clips you if you are still within one step from her, and she’s fast enough to do it before you can sidestep and attack. Instead in the first hits of a normal combo, perform a parry (or a perfect parry) and counterattack while she is off balance. She seems especially susceptible to damage after a perfect parry so time your parries well if you can.

She will also use the duel trick of sheathing her katana, waiting for you to come just within range and then unleash an unblockable attack. This can be sidestepped, and you will have enough time for a counterattack before she recovers. At medium to long range, she will sometimes do an unblockable overhand slash that also leaves her open for a sidestep and counterattack.

Play it safe and don’t try to overextend your combos, and you will be able to defeat her.

Speak with the guardian

When you finally defeat her, she yields and acknowledges your identity. Unfortunately she also tells you that Tadayori’s armor is lost, with only the line from an old scroll to guide you. “Tadayori watches over Azamo Bay for eternity.” Perhaps the armor is on the cliffs behind the town?

Travel to Azamo Bay

Follow the waypoint to Azamo Bay, and you’ll discover a patch of violet chrysanthemums so you know you’re on the right track.

Reach the peak above Azamo Bay

Quite nearby, you’ll run into a pack of Mongols who have taken the musician Yamato prisoner. Looks like they’re on the trail of Tadayori’s armor as well.

Free the musician

Be careful how you approach the fight, as the Mongols would rather kill their hostage than let him fall into your hands. If at any point during the fight you see the skull and crossbones icon appear, immediately rush to Yamato’s defense before he is killed, which will cause the mission to fail.

After all of the Mongols are defeated, rescue Yamato and he will reveal that the armor is right there and ready for your use!

Collect Tadayori’s armor

Move behind Tadayori’s memorial and you’ll be prompted to press :r2: to move the statue.

You will find and put on Tadayori’s legendary armor. None too soon either, as you’re immediately attacked by Mongols who want the armor!

Defend the musician

Since you’re wearing Tadayori’s armor and you have an unlimited supply of arrows nearby, the encounter is clearly designed to favor using archery, which is good because Yamato stands out in the open like a schmuck just waiting for the Mongols to make bard stew. Unfortunately there are no reloads for the longbow, so you’re stuck using the half bow. Tadayori’s armor gives you bonuses to arrow damage and concentration abilities, with a bonus if you happen to score a headshot. Make every shot count and you can keep concentration going for quite some time.

The second wave of attackers will be marked by a rain of fire arrows and some Mongols with sword and shield who will charge you and Yamato.

Try to take out archers immediately with arrows, but don’t be afraid to switch up for your katana in a pinch if anyone gets too close. Just know that the true danger of melee combat is wasting time, because every enemy you don’t take out at range will eat up valuable seconds in melee combat while even more enemies stream in. If you can’t stay on top of the flow, you can quickly become overrun by Mongols, while still having to defend Yamato.

This is particularly dangerous if you let three or more archers stack up on the sidelines, as they will continuously pelt you with arrows, sometimes staggering you to the point where you can’t use the bow to counterattack. If this happens, double tap :o: to roll away and try to get a shot off before they reload. Use concentration regularly to use every second wisely.

Luckily a good headshot can take out almost every enemy immediately, and refills part of your concentration.

Speak with the musician

Once all of the Mongols have been defeated, speak with Yamato to end the mission.

This finishes The Legend of Tadayori mythic quest in Ghost of Tsushima.
