A Short Walk in a Pretty Town is the 40th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of A Short Walk in a Pretty Town Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.
A Short Walk in a Pretty Town is unlocked after completing Friends in Very Low Places.
Quest Giver: Bill Williamson
Chapter: 3
Region: Lemoyne
Gold Medal Requirements:
- Kill 3 Lawmen in Dead Eye while saving Bill
- Complete using only sidearms
- Complete within 4 minutes 30 seconds
- Get 20 headshots
- Complete the mission without taking any health items
Starting Location: Rhodes, Lemoyne
Talk to Bill
You’ll find Bill lounging on the steps of the Bank of Rhodes, with Sean and Micah.
They say that they’re meeting some of the Grays at the saloon to talk about a security job. You will walk down the main street in Rhodes talking about their current situation and the feud between the Braithwaites and the Grays.
Arthur rightly senses that something isn’t right about the whole thing.
Unfortunately just a bit too late. Skip this cinematic.
Survive
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete using only sidearms
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete within 4 minutes 30 seconds
- GOLD MEDAL: Get 20 headshots
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete the mission without taking any health items
This will be a long and brutal firefight. Watch for Grays attacking from all sides, above, and behind you. Stay behind cover, and move from cover to cover as enemies pop up to reduce the amount of damage you take. Try for headshots, kill as quickly as possible, and only use your revolvers or pistols.
Eventually you will hear Micah say that they’re holed up in the gunstore, and that you should go around the back to surprise them.
Head in that direction, being careful of several Grays that will be waiting to ambush you.
Get to the back door of the gun store and for the sake of time, kick the door down.
Inside the gun store, watch out for Grays.
Between you and Micah, you will clean out the room.
Pick up any ammo that you might need to continue, and take cover behind the wall next to the door. From here you can either shoot through the door or the window to the right.
Continue to eliminate Grays as they press the attack, racking up your headshots as you go.
In order to keep up the pace, zoom out on your minimap when necessary to find the remaining Grays and take them out. Eventually the Grays will retreat. If you have a line on any of them as they run, feel free to pad your score. When Micah walks to the Sheriff’s Office and calls out Sheriff Gray, move up to join him.
Suddenly, they’ll emerge from the office with Bill being held hostage. They demand that you throw down your weapons or they’ll shoot Bill in the head.
I’m not sure why they thought that would work. You will go immediately into Dead Eye. Be sure to tag at least three lawmen (including the one holding Bill) before pulling the trigger.
- GOLD MEDAL: Kill 3 Lawmen in Dead Eye while saving Bill
With Bill safe, and most of the town’s Grays decimated, the mission will be complete.
This finishes A Short Walk in a Pretty Town main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest Blood Feuds, Ancient and Modern starts.

I’ve got three advices:
1. Do that in first run. I don’t know for sure but it’s looks impossible in replay.
2. Be sure you DO NOT wear sawed-off shotgun as one of your sidearms and you have only pistols or revolvers before the mission starts. It’s very important because if you have shotgun there is a chance that Arthur will use it in the final duel so you will not able to kill 3 lawmen as shotgun has only 2 bullets.
3. In final duel kill lawmen in that order: 1 central one (holds Bill), 2 far right, 3 right, 4 far left. When I did it another way Micah shoot one of tho of them. (anyway there is always a chance that something goes different way)
Hope that will help someone. It took about 2 hours for me to beat gold 🙂

Thanks very much =)

I just tried this twice and I didn’t realize he switched to the shotgun. I was so confused why I couldn’t mark all of them

Thanks I wish I had read your comment sooner! Same thing it was using my shotgun and I was getting enraged that I could only mark 2 before suddenly shooting and Fing it up

Took a good 4-5 tries on using a first run save setup, I imagine replays would be very difficult to beat the 4m30sec timer.
1. make a save before heading into town, equip a good pistol and buff up with thyme food for dead eye.
2. snake oil once outside, then again in the gunstore
3. you need to lock on to the four lawmen one bullet each and press R2 to shoot before timer runs out, or Micah can kill one then bugs out

Got the game saved before the mission, but can’t seem to beat that timer. Think i’m losing time at the gunstore trying to clear them out. Any tips on making the run abit quicker other than obvious.

Begin the mission and then restart it. Seems to shave off a few seconds at the start.
Also I killed Greys from right to left, and once the initial spawns were clear, I ran to the back of the gun store and kicked in the door without waiting for the prompt. Killed all 4 then went out front and stayed in the street until they retreated.

Good tips. Another time save I found is to start walking up to the Sheriff’s building (where you do the dead-eye part) earlier than you normally would.
You’ll find that you can trigger the Sheriff Gray dialogue earlier and slowpoke Micah will actually jog to catch up to you.

Don’t skip the ending cinematic!
The mission timer ends after you save Bill, and just like with many other timed missions in RDR2, the game wigs out if you do.
I found this out after several tries from my Ch. 3 save point.

I’ve replayef this multiple times just trying to beat the time limit. It’s sad watching Sean die repeatedly.

*replayed
Oldmanjenkins says
Agreed, it’s the worst part of playing it on replay
KillaJames9900 says
Update: I just got the gold. Apparently if you mash the aim button after they come out of the Sherrifs office, you can trigger the dead-eye a little bit early and shorten the conversation.

does not change anything

Another tip: You can break down the door of the gunsmith before Micah tells you to.. just make sure you killed most of the guys outside.
Sam says
I don’t understand how this is possible to do within the time limit. The walk up from the start takes about 70 seconds before you regain control of Arthur, and the conversation with Grey before you go into deadeye is at least 35 seconds. How the hell is it possible to perform all the actions in this mission within the remaining two minutes?
Oldmanjenkins says
Tips on replay:
-every shot you take better be a headshot
-the water trough outside the gunsmith shop is a good cover location once you clear the guys to the right of the sheriff’s office
-once Micah gives the go-ahead kill the 2 guys behind the gunsmith’s before Micah gets one (the dude is a pile of puke but he’s a dead shot)
-rush into the gunsmith’s to get headshots on the guys in there (again, Micah will bust in and shoot guys without even glancing at them)
-the left side of the door is a great cover location inside the gunsmith’s. You can switch from the door to the window so you have more visibility and the piece of wood on the porch doesn’t block you from killing the guys across from the shop.
-eat up all your deadeye and all the core at the gun shop if you have any left. The sheriff stand-off doesn’t require any.
-as you walk over to the sheriff switch to explosive ammo for both sidearms. That way you can tag the 3 open guys with body shots and get guaranteed 1-shot kills.
-oh, and kill people fast as hell so you can get it done below the time limit. It goes without saying that as soon as you see Sean’s mutilated face you wanna skip. Took me about an hour on replay, these are my tips. Oh and whatever you do, don’t head to the sheriff’s office without Micah after the fight. I failed like 3 times that way and the leash is real short. Just chill at the bottom of the stairs until he comes out, and getting in his way will slow him down which could fail the gold requirement.
