Red Dead Redemption 2 The Aftermath of Genesis Walkthrough

October 26, 2018 by Jack McBastard 4 Comments

The Aftermath of Genesis is the 3rd main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Aftermath of Genesis Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.

The Aftermath of Genesis triggers when you complete Enter, Pursued By a Memory.

Quest Giver: Pearson
Chapter: 1
Region: Ambarino

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • Kill each deer with one arrow
  • Do not spook either deer
  • Get a clean kill on the second deer

Starting Location: Colter, Ambarino

Follow Charles

Pearson tells Arthur that the camp is extremely low on food, and soon people will be starving. Arthur and Charles volunteer to go hunting, and with Charles’s hand injury, its up to you to learn how to use a bow!

Follow Charles until he picks up a trail and asks you to stop. He’s picked up a deer trail, and a recent one at that. Go back to your horse and equip your bow from the stored weapons, then follow Charles’s directions while staying crouched to remain stealthy. He will teach you to use the Eagle Eye ability, which will be invaluable for hunting, tracking, gathering herbs and generally staying alive.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Kill each deer with one arrow
  • GOLD MEDAL: Do not spook either deer

Follow the trail of the deer slowly and cautiously so that you don’t spook them which will immediately fail the gold medal requirement. As you get closer, be careful coming over small hills or moving into groups of bushes or trees which might hide the deer, causing you to get far closer to it than you should before coming into view. If the deer is close enough you might be able to see the vertical lines given off by its scent, but usually by the time you can smell the deer, it can also smell you. If possible try to approach it from downwind. You can tell by the scent lines that Arthur trails when in Eagle Eye, which will show how much scent you’re giving off and which direction it is blowing.

When you find the deer, approach as slowly as you can until you have a clean headshot. You can also shoot for the body, but you’re less likely to get a one hit kill which the gold medal requirement demands. To get enough force out of the arrow you will have to draw the string back and hold it, but if you hold too long, your aim will waver substantially. If you don’t have a shot you’re satisfied with, or your arm is getting tired causing you to waver, release the aim button to lower the bow without shooting. If you miss, you’ll fail two gold medals at once. When you’re satisfied with your shot, you can call out to the deer to cause it to raise its head. As its head is coming up, activate Dead Eye, line up and shoot. If you don’t shoot quickly enough, about two seconds after you use the call, the deer will spook and run away. It’s a risky gamble, but calling to the deer is often the only way to get a clean headshot when it isn’t grazing.

Hunt Another Deer

On the first deer you didn’t have to risk using the call, but on the second you need to get a clean kill for the gold medal.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Get a clean kill on the second deer

Hopefully by now you’re comfortable with using the bow, tracking, Dead Eye, and calling to the deer, because the second one you hunt will require all of these skills. Find another deer and kill it with a clean kill as described above, without spooking it. Once you’ve brought down the second deer, call your horse over and stow the carcass on the horse’s back. Mount up and go back to Charles, who will be loading the first deer you brought down. Follow him back to camp, being sure to avoid a bear attack along the way.

Go to Pearson

Once you’re back at camp, get off your horse, pick up the deer and carry it to Pearson at the butcher station. Drop the deer near him, then skin the deer when prompted to end the mission.

This finishes The Aftermath of Genesis main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest Old Friends starts.

Does Eagle Eye not work on this mission? I tried pushing R3 on PS4, no luck. I keep losing the deer.

The dead eye tutorial is the mission after this one…even if it can be done before this one. So nope. No Dead Eye. Just Eagle Eye.
