Red Dead Redemption 2 The King’s Son Walkthrough

November 24, 2018 by Jack McBastard 11 Comments

The King’s Son is the 84th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The King’s Son Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.

The King’s Son is unlocked after completing The Fine Art of Conversation and Favored Sons.

Quest Giver: Charles
Chapter: 6
Region: New Hanover

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • While infiltrating Fort Wallace, headshot every soldier blocking your way to Eagle Flies
  • Kill 15 enemies while escaping in the canoe
  • Complete with at least 80% accuracy

Starting Location: Wapiti Indian Reservation, New Hanover

Talk to Charles

Charles wants you to speak with Rains Fall to help with the situation. Eagle Flies has been captured and will be hanged if Charles and you can’t stop it.

Charles has been working on a plan for the rescue. Get on your horse and follow him while he explains. You can ford the river and get fairly close to the fort from the opposite side unobserved, and from there sneak in. Charles advises that you will have to be quiet, using only knives and your bow. Still, bring your guns, just in case.

Cross where Charles indicates.

When you reach the fort, Charles will dismount and tell you to follow him. Stay low and be quiet.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Complete with at least 80% accuracy
  • GOLD MEDAL: While infiltrating Fort Wallace, headshot every soldier blocking your way to Eagle Flies

The Gold Medal requirement for this mission is specific in what is required. You have to get headshots on every soldier blocking your path to Eagle Flies. That means that you have to kill every soldier and do it with a headshot. Whenever there are two guards next to each other, you will have to use Dead Eye to tag both targets in the head and eliminate both of them to prevent Charles from getting a kill. Your first targets will be the two soldiers at the gate. Use Dead Eye to headshot them both.

Follow Charles, and when a lookout holds his lantern over the wall to illuminate the area, take cover against the wall to avoid being seen.

Charles will lead you around the perimeter of the fort, and you’ll run into another pair of guards to kill. Use Dead Eye to headshot them both to prevent Charles from getting a kill.

Charles will move on, then attach a grappling hook to the top of a wall to sneak in. Really wish I could do that.

Now that you’re on top of the wall, a solider will appear from the tower ahead of you. Tell Charles that you want to take the lead, and then shoot him in the head with an arrow.

Follow Charles along the walkway until he spots another guard ahead. Once again, shoot that guard in the head with an arrow.

Go through the tower and along the top of the wall until you reach another pair of guards. Use Dead Eye to headshot them both to prevent Charles from getting a kill.

Move ahead to the next tower, and take cover by the door ahead. There is another guard to eliminate with a headshot.

Follow Charles down to the ground, and he’ll realize that there are simply too many soldiers around Eagle Flies to attack directly.

Go into the tower and climb to the walkway, watching out for the sentry on the wall.

Headshot for one, sir?

From the same walkway where the sentry was, look to the north and shoot the lantern hanging above the woodpile. Talk about an accident waiting to happen.

Continue down the walkway and turn right before the stairs to go down the ladder to where Charles waits.

He will lead you to Eagle Flies’s cell.  Search the body of the jailer for the key.

Once back outside with Eagle Flies, there will be a massive firefight. Trade your bow for a gun, and take out any soldiers in the area. Since there are no longer requirements for headshots, shoot center mass just to keep your accuracy up. You might want to conserve your Dead Eye for the next section.

Eagle Flies will lead you to a hole in the wall where you can escape, but discovers that it has been repaired. Charles will tell you to destroy the wall somehow. There is a nearby cannon that you can use, or if you have some dynamite on you that will also work.

Get on your horse, and defend Eagle Flies while he mounts up with Charles.

Several waves of soldiers will chase you on horseback. Make sure to keep your accuracy high, and only fire when you’re sure of your shot. Eliminate all of them before you reach the canoes. If you still have some soldiers left alive by the time you reach the canoes, you will have to eliminate them while Charles “gets the boats ready”. When there are no more soldiers, Charles will direct you to get in the other canoe and follow him.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Kill 15 enemies while escaping in the canoe

Follow Charles down the river, picking off the soldiers who appear along the way. Use Dead Eye wherever possible since the combination of your forward movement and bobbing in the river will make accurate targeting very difficult. It is a tall order to get 15 kills in the time you have, but if you can keep your Dead Eye refreshed, you have a fighting chance.

You will have to rack up all your kills before you land your canoe in order to fulfill this gold medal requirement. Once you do, land and watch the end of mission cinematic.

This finishes The King’s Son main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest My Last Boy starts.

Next Up: My Last Boy

You don’t have to headshot EVERY soldier you kill to get the check mark. You can let Charles take one whenever there’s two.

Yeah I let Charles headshot one guy whenever there were two, and I got the gold medal just fine. I think the problem some people have with not getting the requirement checked off is that their shots aren’t registering as headshots, like hitting the neck or something.

Yea considering there is no way to mark more than 1 target with a bow or throwing knife, if you had to kill everyone it would be impossible

He stole 15th kill from me and I didn’t get the checkmark. I counted how much I’ve killed and have no idea how that works.

I tried this 5 times before I found this comment in a YouTube video:
“While on the ground don’t shoot the guy up in the tower holding the lantern, shoot the guy on the ground instead.” (Robert Green)

Just do that! Don’t f***ing shoot the guy up in the tower!

For some reason it seems correct what Marcio says. I didn’t get the gold medal either because of a mysterious instance of not hitting the head. I double checked each corpse if I had shot the arrow in their head and this was clearly the case. When I tried his solution, I got the gold in one try.

I killed every soldier on the banks when I was in the canoe and didn’t get the checklist item.
